Uk gun laws 17:12 - Aug 29 with 1725 views | MalcolmMeatballHead | I helped an old boy move today and he gave me a beautiful 177 rifle. Do I need a license to own this? Does it need to be locked away? I'm a bit flummoxed as to what to do with it
Uk gun laws on 18:17 - Aug 29 with 1608 views | Jambo | Nice gift! Is it an air rifle that fires a lead pellet or a rifle that fires a bullet? If it's an air rifle, then you don't need to have a licence or notify the police or get a gun cabinet. However, if it's a rifle then you will need a firearms license, a gun cabinet and somewhere to demonstrate where you will use it. What make / age is it?

The key issue is propellant. If a "gun" uses compressed air to project a pellet, it is an air rifle. If it uses gunpowder, also known as "black powder", usually contained in a brass casing, to fire a projectile, or many little projectiles in the case of a shotgun, from the end of that casing, then it requires a licence. Not everything that requires a licence has a rifled barrel.

I still have an old air rifle that I've had since I was a kid. I haven't used it for years and believe laws may have changed a bit since I last did. I did one evening use the wheelie bin at the end of the drive for target practice from the upstairs bedroom window and someone told me that wasn't acceptable now apparently. I still don't know if that's true but as it was on my property at the time I'm going with baloney. I had someone think it funny to pester me with a drone a couple of summers back and I popped inside to grab it, came back out and pointed it at the drone. Someone said that was asking for trouble but as I hadn't loaded it I couldn't see the problem. For the record I do think it should be legal to take out nosey drones in any way people see fit but having looked it up it seems that's not ok either. I may have asked on here thinking about it and got a negative reply. [Post edited 29 Aug 2022 21:24]

"as it was on my property at the time I'm going with baloney" I think the issue was more with aiming at the blue bin in the neighbour's garden ... or just your poor aim that made them think you were! I understand the neighbours sent a drone up to check you had stopped and are currently sending footage to the police.

Pah, it was my black bin and I never miss. This was a few years ago and in some regards another life. The drone [non] incident was where I live now. Have to say I've not seen it recently. Maybe someone else got fed up with it too and had a loaded rifle at the ready!

You really annoyed those previous neighbours for them to look you up now and send the drone over!
