British Gas - robbin' gits 17:48 - Oct 20 with 821 views | HARRY10 | Sept 2021 I was transferred over to BG as the company I was with had gone bust. The rate just announced means that I am paying more for a standing charge than I am per unit of electricity. I understand that the price of electricity has risen dramatically, and there is little that can be done but bite on the bullet But the thievin' bustards have cranked up the standing charge by just over 300%. Without any explanation as to why, and no justification as nothing has happened to the cables between my house and where it comes from. Come the revolution, comrades

They're just charging what OFGEM tell them they can charge which, if my knowledge is up to date, it still less than it's costing them to provide the energy if they haven't sufficiently hedged their position.

Yep. It’s not BG specific Harry - they’re all doing it. The rationale being that not everyone has gas, but almost everyone has electricity, so they’ve loaded the increased price onto the leccy bill. And then done it by upping the standing charge so they can guarantee the income and people can’t wriggle out of it by cutting usage. The tragedy of all this is that there will be some people who will be choosing to go cold this winter without realising it won’t help much with their bills. (It’s also a really bad way to encourage greater efficiency, which should be the number 1 target of our energy policy and not profits for the producers. But that’s a separate issue).

err, you haven't really grasped this have you, as in "I understand that the price of electricity has risen dramatically, and there is little that can be done but bite on the bullet " having raised this elsehere someone chipped in with their brother has been in hospital for a few days and is expected to stay there for a few more weeks, at least what is he paying for, he will not be using any electricity ? what extra cost has he incurred - nothing that can justify the 300 % (?) increase that he and so many others have been hit with you pay for corkage in some restaurants, however you don't pay it when you are not buying a bottle, or are actually even in the place has the phone line rental been increased 3 times, or cable TV ? what about water, do water in and sewage companies not face rising costs, are they claiming that their costs to maintain the supply have risen three times perhaps Town should now add a hefty surcharge to my ST, to cover the extra costs of maintaining my seat

Zx1988 understood it perfectly well. The loading onto the standing charge for electricity is an industry wide issue, due to the way Ofgem negotiated the price changes. It's got nothing to do with British Gas. Your old supplier would have been doing the same had they been in business still.
