To be honest I don't know if I will, was watching last week's 'Have I got News For You' hosted by Gary Neville, who was being castigated by Ian Hislop, who defended his decision for going to Qatar with comments about being better to participate and highlight the human rights deficiencies wherever possible than stay away and be silent. I have to say that it will make no difference now to it going ahead whether we watch it or not, nor will it bring back the poor souls who have perished. So maybe it would be best to watch and join in the after match discussions but never holding back on mentioning the abuses that FIFA and the Qatari ruling elite have perpetrated. | |

I can vaguely remember 1974 World Cup but 78-90 tournaments were something special for me. 1982 in particular was great. I was 14 and seeing players from all over the world was something different. Something to relish and savour. There was a sprinkling of foreign players in the English game, foremost amongst them of course our Dutch duo. Unlike today, however, the World Cup gave us our only chance to see the 'exotics' of Brazil, Argentina et al. Nowadays, watching the World Cup is little more than a Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga mix we see on a weekly basis. I watched the final in '82 whilst in West Germany on an exchange trip. I was so elated to see Italy beat the Germans. It was a great tournament. |  |
