Wouldn’t surprise me at all.
But probably better to wait for more independent confirmation. That think tank and the guy behind it is probably not a very reputable source. He seems to be a propagandist for the Saudi-backed status quo in the Middle East. And we still need to be careful and skeptical of the criticism coming from that direction even though we know Qatar is demonstrably bad on its own terms.
On a connected note re: the World Cup coverage, it’s important to remember that, since winning the WC bid, Qatar has now moved firmly to the “wrong side” in ours and the Saudis’ Middle East sphere of influence games. Perhaps that’s why the criticism of Qatar getting the World Cup in the first place was far too muted when it needed to be much, much stronger. Coming now, it seems like we’re locking the stable door almost a decade after we watched the horse bolt. |  |
