In the circumstances the Tories could say that they are doing the decent thing and letting the Labour candidate stand unopposed. That is what Labour and the Lib Dems did in the by election following the murder ofComservative MP David Amess. This case is analogous, fortunately somebody gave a tip off about the plan to murder Rosie Cooper, so it is not identical, but it is quite clear that she has been driven from politics by the strain of it all.
It would also mean that the Tories wouldn't subject themselves to that "interesting test of public opinion".
