The average adult vocabulary is widely acknowledged to be between 20-35,000 words. The quoted figure needed to be successful at GCSE is 50,000 words. I guess a lot depends on what is meant by success but it is a sign of how literacy-demanding GCSE now is and how important high levels of literacy are to succeed academically. |  |
