Robson Out... 13:23 - Jan 31 with 1424 views | gainsboroughblue | Just thinking. In these days of high manager turnover, particularly at the higher levels, when would our very own SBR been at his most vulnerable if the management climate have been like it is now? I know there were calls for his head early on in his Town tenure, but when was that? We had a pretty rocky run during 71-72, when we didn't score for 6 games and had a 4-0 and 7-0 defeat included in there. Also, 77-78 wasn't a great season before the cup run began. Anyone who was a regular attender around this time have any (better) examples?

Yep, the North Stand got a little "Robson Out" early days. I think I am right in saying the Cobbold led board rewarded those chants by giving Bobby a better contract. Manager's had much more power in those days I think. Alex Ferguson would have been another example of someone under real pressure at Man Utd. His successor David Moyse got very little time. It's all about money/status and losses that no-one can afford to wait any longer than a half dozen games. Up until now ITFC has been a good club to manage - patient people everywhere; fans included.

Good call on Ferguson being another example. I think it was Mark Robins who saved him from the sack with a winner at Forest in the FA Cup, then they went on to win it and the rest is history.

Robson Out... on 13:43 - Jan 31 with 1235 views | DJR | I started watching Ipswich a couple of months after Robson became manager and don't recall any concerns about him in the years before Ipswich became successful, although I didn't stand in the North Stand in the early years, and I do remember the bust-up he had early on with Billy Baxter. I certainly had no grounds to complain given we were in the First Division. [Post edited 31 Jan 2023 13:45]

So why were there ‘Robson out’ chants? I know that we had won the league in the early 60s but weren’t overly successful become him. Would the equivalent be calling for the managers head whilst 14/15 in the PL? Seems a bit odd to do that.

Who knows. I was in Churchmans. Much more civilised and stoic.

Robson Out... on 14:19 - Jan 31 with 1069 views | PJH | The much mentioned calls for SBR's head were on 7th September 1971 during the home League Cup defeat to Man U. I suppose it was relatively early in a reign that ran to over 13 years but he had been ITFC Manager for just over 30 months by then. From 1972/73 onwards, all was good, even winning the F.A. Cup in our one poor League season. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It was at a Man Utd match and he substituted Mick Hill for Bryan Hamilton. Hill had been the only spark in a very disappointing performance. I have to say thatI joined in but that demonstration of frustration by us meant that the next day he went to Blackburn and bought Allan Hunter. That was his best ever buy it because Hunter was the foundation of all those ten years of ecstasy. You can all thank me for joining in.

Was there with my late mother - only visit she ever made to PR - think she wanted to see George Best who scored 2 goals, one when he was on the ground, after Jimmy Robertson had given us the lead. Robson said the Board called him in the next morning and instead of the dreaded sack, the Cobbolds apologised for the crowd chanting "Robson out" and told him to get on with the job, Class!
