Big Match Replayed today. 10:55 - Feb 11 with 955 views | Bluespeed225 | Man City at home, December 79’. From that game on we were purring. Think we beat Southampton, lost one, and then it all came together.
Big Match Replayed today. on 11:27 - Feb 11 with 887 views | Churchman | It was a strange season. I saw quite a few of the games, home and away. The first half of it we really weren’t great. Disjointed, poor. We lost 2-1 in consecutive weeks to Arsenal and Liverpool at home in October and were outplayed. Hammered at Palace, easily beaten at places like Brighton and Wolves, it wasn’t good. Then it all came together. We didn’t just win. We absolutely hammered teams week in week out. The big disappointment was the FA Cup. I didn’t go, but we’d murdered them 4-0 away a week or two before the tie and managed to lose. We had a real chance that year. The highlight was mauling Man U, but there were many others including crushing Man City, West Brom, Norwich, Palace and a cracking win at Spurs. It was no surprise in 80/81 that we went so close. We were that good.

Just watched, it could have been 8! Gates could have had 5 in the first half! In other news, Tommy Docherty beaten up on a train by fans, night in Stockport hospital. It earned about 30 seconds from Brian Moore! Was he managing then? Left United in 77’?

I think Docherty was at QPR by then. He'd just been appointed 24 hours earlier when Town beat them in the final game of the 78/79 season. As for the Man City game referred to here. I only ever saw the video of the goals, but on the rare occasions I go to Portman Road (such as next weekend as it happens), I always sit in the East Stand and picture back through the years to Gates beating Joe Corrigan from 30 yards out on the left.

Memory plays tricks, but wasn't this the exact time we moved Gates to the hole behind the striker (not in this Man City game though), put Brazil up front and left out Clive Woods, which led to a dramatic upturn in fortunes?

Eric Gates was Mr Top Bins before Top Bins was a thing. Never seen a player score so many goals in the top corner

I thought we’d tried to play that way pretty much from the start of the season, but that maybe my mind/memory playing tricks. What I do remember was that all of a sudden the players confidence went through the roof and the opposition looked beaten when they ran out. A classic for that was the West Brom game. Played I think Boxing Day or New Year’s Day it was freezing cold. WBA had a very good side with Regis and co, but right fr9m the kick off it was how many are we going to get today? They never got a kick.
