Russia has been nibbling away at their territory for more than 100 years. It views it as part of their territory.
They certainly do have effective, if small, armed forces. They’ll be a good addition to NATO. Uncle Vlad will not be a happy bunny. I think the Kremlin afternoon joke telling session might be cancelled today.
The Finnish people are a resilient lot. The Winter War of 1940 is a classic of what they can do. Ok Russia steamrollered them in the end, but at huge cost. Not that Stalin cared about the casualties any more than Putin does now. |  | | |

Think it more likely Putin would have gone south, into the Caucasus, or south-east into the "Stans" than Finland or the Baltics at this stage. Probably aiming to absorb them economically and diplomatically - as with Belarus - rather than through military takeover.
It was the collapse of attempts to do that (Euromaidan leading to the downfall of Yanukovych) which led to the first invasion of 2014, then threats to the Donbas and Crimea (water supply) which partially sparked the second in 2022.
