Doesn’t this outline the challenge for any decent (not amazing) young player and clubs bringing these players through. The jump for all players let along inexperienced player to the prem is substantial.
Prem clubs will happily drop 5-15m on players which lower clubs cannot dream of turning down but the prem club has no real ambition or plan to play them consistently in first team, preferring to squad them or send back to champ as in the case of Downes.
Downes now having had a good championship season followed by very few chances in the prem and European games now finds himself having to fight for a place back in the champ, albeit with a club that could get promoted.
Downes has made his cash, good for him. Ipswich have fed of some morsels, good for us.
