Interesting, perhaps significant, football-related legal goings-on on 20:58 - Dec 20 with 1009 views | MattinLondon | I know that I’m in the minority but I would have allowed the English clubs to split but on the clear understanding that the English players won’t be considered for international selection. Hopefully other football federations would have made the same stand.

The big issue was that the Super League was a closed shop iirc. There was no promotion or relegation basically following the MLS model. Where Clubs had to apply to join the league. It's a money grab to help various clubs and particularly the Spanish Clubs to maintain their status in spite of their ridiculous financial position. Some back in the day said the same for the Premier League but at least it was an open format. [Post edited 20 Dec 2023 21:06]

I'm not sure that would weaken the breakaway league - I fear it would just weaken international football. It would become like the Davis Cup, dwarfed by the major tournaments that can be won on a non-international basis (champions league, intergalactic club cup, whatever). I have no confidence that when faced with the riches that this thing would bring, players would choose the three lions over £3m a week. Just look at the Arab league. Henderson is a former England captain and (for some reason) is still getting England call ups.

Also make it clear that the clubs concerned can never, ever return to the regular pyramid.

Frimmers the whole point is that the EPL would be downgraded to Championship level. A similar scenario happened at an amateur hockey level over here in Ireland. Where all the main clubs joined the EYHL league, yes it created an all Ireland league but equally the teams in leagues below jumped from regional 2nd divisions to the 1st Division overnight. If you don't have the top teams to compete against its a faux league setup.
