Positives from yesterday 13:06 - Feb 4 with 1772 viewsIllinoisblue

1. Big Keith, obviously. Adds another dimension to our play and worries defenders just by being on the pitch. Gives us another option as needed.

2. Morsy second half. Like a man possessed leading us forward.

3. Broadhead glimmer of hope. Few glimpses of his passing and vision to suggest he might be coming out of his slump.

....the one "leading us forward" is that he's not particularly quick with his "work".

Most things that he does are brilliant and without him we are a far worse team, but he's not particularly fast and he doesn't pick a pass quickly.

As a result our transition is far too slow. It was really obvious yesterday (in the first half) how much quicker Preston were in the transition phase than we were.

Morsy is doing that role, because nobody else is doing it, but it does mean that teams can get back into the defensive block against us with relative ease and we end up starting our attacking phases again and then failing to break down the block,

Really we need him to go back to simply taking the ball from the CBs, or winning the ball, and releasing it quicker to a more naturally attacking player.

Blah, blah, blah.

I know what you mean. Often times he does that shuffling run with ball and he’s nine times out of ten strong enough to hold off his opponent but many times has to go backward or sideways and then make his pass. Obviously if he had an extra yard of pace he’d be a 20million player. He wasn’t helped much yesterday by a) Luongo (like everyone else) being way off it and b) being kicked in the head.

Anyhoo. Beat WBA and all will seem right with the world. Lose and it’s a single digit gap to the chasing pack and it will turn ugly.

Yes I've long said the same. One of the reasons I've been so baffled by the high praise Lee Evans has been getting since the announcement of his contract termination is because it was so painful at times watching both of them in midfield want to take 400 touches of the ball before moving it on.

It is very noticeable about him that he rarely goes for the early sweep out to Burns (or whoever), instead carries it a bit more then passes it sideways to someone else.

Hard to be too critical because, as you say, we definitely feel his absence when he's not there.

To relate back to the OP, and McKenna mentioned it yesterday, one big positive of having Moore up top is we can afford to go a little more direct and move the ball up the pitch more quickly by firing it into him. Will hopefully allow us to have less of these pedestrian moments going forwards.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Re that last paragraph - that is something that we have hugely missed with Hirst out. Having the direct option with him was a huge part of our improved form last season, which carried over to this season, and and Jackson simply can't offer that.

Appreciate we had almost this exact exchange yesterday, but it is a point worth repeating!

Yep, harsh to blame Jackson too much as it's not his game but he has specific strengths that are useful in certain circumstances and outside of that just looks completely lost.

Moore has to start every game now, maybe using Al-Hamadi to rest him if needed as he also looked a real handful, as he immediately made us look much better yesterday and gives confidence to the other players around him that they can get on the ball and create something.

I'd add Al-Hamadi's cameo as well. Looked to be a powerful, confident, aggressive and intelligent runner in the few minutes he had.

Quite so.

Jackson has played up front out of necessity and has done well but he is not a "back to goal" player and we need that to bring Broadhead/Chaplin/Burns (Sarmiento/Chaplin/Hutchinson) into the game in the right part of the pitch.

We now have two replacements for Hirst so hopefully we see our play match earlier in the season.
