After the Armada was done and dusted in 1588, Elizabeth’s sailors were all bunged off the ships to starve as surplus to requirements. In WW2, for merchant seamen your pay was stopped the moment your ship went down. Owners used to insure up their most rusty, unseaworthy tubs first and sent them to the convoys not caring if they never came back. In fact, money was made if they didn’t. Some were in such bad condition they just sank without the help of a uBoat or mine. The crew? Who cares. Get another. To this day, it’s a demanding, dangerous job.
