Just included in the King's speech. Thanks to all who campaigned on this important change of law - to criminalise those who lie and mislead public inquiries with impunity.

Neither did I Matt. Only discovered it when the trial for two policemen/lawyer central to the cover up (perverting the course of justice) collapsed on a technicality - it was established that a public inquiry is not a court of law - hence perverting the course of justice laws could not apply. They lied with impunity and until the law is changed - those who have lied at inquiries (blood scandal / post office /Grenfell etc.) will remain above the law.

He took early retirement on a £83,000 (presumably index linked) pension. In addition to the Hillsborough cover-up, Bettison was also accused of interfering in the Stephen Lawrence inquiry, not in a positive way. Liverpool John Moores University did rescind his honorary fellowship, but he still retains his knighthood.

So no law can be applied retrospectively - so all those police who misled the Taylor public inquiry and inquests (Including Norman Bettison who was absolutely central to that given he wrote sections of the Wain report) - can not be prosecuted under new laws. Truth is there will be no justice - people know and are resigned to that. The Hillsborough Law campaign was to change the law to prevent a repeat of the cover up - to criminalise those who currently lie with impunity. Ref the knigthood think it would take a criminal conviction before they ever take action. Bettison, like Jimmy Saville will go to his grave ennobled by the British state.
