The BBC axing Hardtalk given the short-term, short attention span nature of their other news programmes, let alone some of the other vacuous sh!te they pump out, is just about the most depressing thing I've heard this week. And I've heard some depressing things this week.

What a shower of sh!t!

Really? I like Hardtalk, it’s a proper interview that goes into real detail. Though I must confess that on more than one occasion it has led to me waking up at 2am on the sofa with a very much unneeded glass of Malbec just millimetres from being spilled on the couch.

Agreed. Great thread on X, incorporating deservedly scathing comments aimed at the BBC for the decision -

That’s a shame I used to watch that on BBC world when whoring my way around south east Asia back in the early part of this century.

BBC R4 devoted a large section of its 'The Media Show' to this y'day evening, with Stephen Sackur as guest contributor. Fans of HT will be pleased to know he will be contributing to ongoing discussions with the Beeb re their plans to axe the programme (maybe he can persuade them to change their mind?).

Amongst other things he commented on how he's travelled the world as a BBC journalist for decades, & the global reaction of shock at the Beeb's decision - "has the BBC gone mad?" or similar words was apparently the aghast response generally!

Sadly it seems another victim of cuts to government funding of the World Service, the dangers of which Tim Davie spoke about a few days ago.

The BBC's decision to eviscerate itself in response to the reduction in it;s funding is baffling. It is intentionally reducing the content which makes it worth retaining in it's own right - not only serious news analysis but the downgrading of both BBC4 and 6 Music over the last few years is sad.
