America's Cup 14:23 - Sep 19 with 2181 views | Perublue | I've been kind of following this event for decades with no real knowledge of sailing,I know we are more or less in the semi finals now. We're bound to have sailing fans on here due to our geographical area...Do we finally win it after 173 years ? [Post edited 19 Sep 2024 15:07]

America's Cup on 15:03 - Sep 19 with 2115 views | ElephantintheRoom | Seems a good sport for an offshore tax avoider to get involved in. From what little I have seen of this event in the past it seems to depend how many kiwis you have in the team

America's Cup on 15:53 - Sep 19 with 2058 views | Help | We we not supposed to win it with that olympic sailing chap in charge last time and for some reason didn't. I think it was the boat but as you can see peripheral interest.

America's Cup on 09:16 - Sep 20 with 1887 views | soupytwist | I sail a bit, and used to sail a lot. I followed the last one quite closely and am following this one too. Will we win it? I think it more likely that New Zealand win it again. They're just very good at this kind of thing. Their helms are good in foiling boats, I just get the impression that Ainslie is still getting to grips with the foiling thing although there have been encouraging signs recently. Plus there's the Ineos factor, I don't think that Big Sir Jim Radcliffe has been that successful in any of his sporting endeavors for some reason. We've also got to get past the Italians in the challenger final. The Italian sailors are strong but they broke a fairly crucial part of their boat late in the semi-final series so maybe there's some vulnerability there. Our boat seems to be good in certain wind conditions (did will in the recent races when it was a bit windier). If we get past the Italians, I've no idea what the likely weather conditions would be in Barcelona in October. There are a couple of good YouTube channels to watch - search for Planet Sail and Mozzy Sails. The second one goes into great detail about the tech on the boats and other elements. I like the ones where he gets his two mates round to talk about it while having a beer/glass of wine (largely because they're not afraid of pointing out Ainslie's shortcomings) but he's not made one of those for a while. America's Cup on 14:41 - Oct 4 with 1595 views | soupytwist | Contains spoilers for those (like me) who normally wait until the evening to catch up with the re-runs of the day's racing on YouTube. Well, Team Ineos Britannia have won the challenger series, beating the Italians 7 races to 4. The Italians continued to be plagued by equipment problems - broke a sail batten before one race and couldn't get it replaced in time, suffered damage when nosediving at high speed in another - which gave two races to Ineos. On the other hand Ineos have generally sailed well, albeit with some unforced errors that in one case definitely cost them a race. In another, light wind race, they got well ahead but the breeze died and they couldn't finish within the time limit. They probably would have if they hadn't made a mistake and fallen off the foils earlier in the race. However, to finish first, first you have to finish. By getting the boat round the course unscathed in the heavier conditions while being pretty evenly matched for speed with the Italians in all wind speeds, Ineos has deservedly prevailed. One thing that's interesting to watch on the official America's Cup YouTube channel is the replay of the races from each boat's stern camera. You get to hear all the onboard comms between the crew and while Ben Ainslie still gets annoyed at certain points - understandable as this is high stakes stuff in extraordinary boats - it does seem like it's more of a team effort with his co-helm and the trimmers contributing more to a calmer environment. Maybe the necessity of having separate helms for each side (due to the limited overall amount you can see from each side of the boat) means that it can't all be about Ainslie all the time. Will they beat New Zealand? If the boats are pretty evenly matched on speed and reliability (and we don't know that yet) it will probably be closer than many people anticipated a few weeks ago. If the the Kiwis have an edge it'll be boringly predictable. If Ineos has any kind of edge it will be enthralling stuff. [Post edited 16 Oct 2024 15:47]

America's Cup on 14:43 - Oct 4 by Perublue | 60 years since we even raced for it .... it's coming home .... and then to rename it |
It's named after the first boat to win it, rather than the first country to win it. And back in 1964 the other challenger was also a British boat built, it would seem, specifically so Sovereign (which is the one that lost the cup race series) had another yacht to train against. Winning a challenger series in which there were four other (two very serious, two reasonably serious) contenders is a whole different kettle of fish.

The only shame for me is if we beat them it's not the Americans or Aussies,I quite like the kiwis in the sporting world.

There's at least one non-Kiwi among the NZ sailors but they don't lean on overseas talent quite as much as some of the other teams. Of the Ineos sailing team two are Aussies. [Post edited 4 Oct 2024 15:33]

I once met someone who was a 'grinder' manning a winch. He cheerfully admitted he couldn't steer a pedalo but his fitness and power levels were off the scale.

Sorry but not sure it is. Kiwi team is a team with strength with this boat and a depth of tactical sailing. For me the interesting bit is the 2 minutes chasing around the start box and whoever starts first has the advantage of going where is the best wind strength is. The boats are magnificent but as a sailor not really boats but flying machines. the cup was better with more in the fleet as with the junior and women's competitions. Will be up at 1 am to see the races tonight then the Everton game and then 10am Soccer practice with my son in the morning. COYKIWIS AND COYBLUES
