Ipswich Town 4–0 Manchester City
Mills (7') Gates (12', 15', 53')

As somebody who never watched him play, I feel like 90% of the Eric Gates goals I've seen on YouTube, etc. have been crackers.

This was , while not quite the start, but certainly the game where it all started to click big time. If I remember, we might have lost the next week, then didn't lose again until Everton in the Cup in March. If the last half of that season and the first half of the next season had been 'a season', we'd have been untouchable. Just the wrong 42 games!

Great memories.

Mariner was just awesome, won everything in the air and what a player Gatesy was too, superb finishing.

I remember seeing Butch at left back on quiet a few occasions when Osman and Beattie were the first choice central defence.

What a team we had then. It was a pleasure and an excitement to go watch them every week.

The stat for the 1979/80 season is that if Town’s points haul in the first 21 games had matched their points haul in the second 21 games, we’d have won the title by 6 points.
