Let’s Ban Christmas 11:12 - Dec 21 with 699 viewsChurchman

This is about offending people. The Puritans! In the 17th Century between 1647 and the Restoration in 1660, Christmas was in the bin. No double issue Radio Times, pigs in blankets (now fashionable but still ghastly), office parties or the Kings Christmas waffle.

The first summary by RTE is good, the second more in defence of Cromwell but tells the story in more depth. It actually happened! The people didn’t take it too well despite not having to worry about what to get the misses for Christmas.

The Puritans really didn’t do fun.

'pigs in blankets' - I don't mind eating them but the stupid, twee name for sausages wrapped in bacon makes me want to puke.

Seems to be an excuse for supermarkets to wrap up dogs todger or lips and trash sausages in cheap fatty bacon. Yes, and the name is a puke in a bucket job.

One Xmas, the way the pigs-in-blankets were placed on the plate made them look like a knob-end poking out of a foreskin.
It was funny at the time but it's put me off them for good.
I hope I haven't spoilt your enjoyment of gobbling your pigs-in-blankets on Xmas day.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

In the mid-late 90,s I worked nights for a while at Haverhill Mear Products wrapping bacon around little sausages.
