This relegation dogfight is the good stuff... 19:56 - Feb 14 with 1721 viewsjasondozzell

These are the good days. That's what I thought after watching the Ashton KM interview.

The club continues to go from strength to strength with the investment and management that have come from the Gamechanger takeover and ORG/Bright Path overseeing things. Despite all the problems with huge investment funds and American hedge funds taking over the game, we knew we needed it to rescue the club, put it back on its feet and allow us to compete again. The restoration of PR a literal as well as metaphorical example. Can't forget though that it is a Faustian pact of sorts...

KM is a special, special manager. To be even in with a chance of fighting relegation at this point is an unbelievable achievement already in my book considering how quickly we've risen again

Of course there was disappointment after Saints game but really we are still being spoiled. The best 14 games and the effort we will see is going to be special again no matter what happens. We should all should relish and enjoy it.

Particularly because these are still the romantic (it is Valentine's Day) times - we are the underdog, we've got a brilliant team spirit, we do things the right way, we're a throwback to a different period in English football when we were the best team in England and Europe, the ground and history oozes class.

As the club grows, we might look back on these times even more fondly than we realise now because there's still that sense of realness and excitement about us that gets harder to retain the higher you go. As the investment continues and we hopefully continue to grow it's inevitable that the club will become even more slick and corporate. If you look at the top clubs, they are gigantic corporations where everything from mascots to dining to substitution graphics is slick, optimised and 'product' delivered

In a really strange way, it's why I sometimes think the League One promotion was the best moment of all of the Game changer era. Precisely because it seemed simpler and almost under the radar unless you were a Town fan. Just a great side playing great football and built on a brilliant culture and spirit.

Obviously last season topped it but there's still a part of me that thinks that League One run was the best...

We can't lose over the next 14 games. We know the players and KM will give it everything and we will be proud of them. There's still romance in it!

We will stay up.

We've found ourselves in pretty much the same scenario as last season...a 4-horse race (but with Wolves involved instead of Leeds), and Southampton the first to drop away. Unfortunately no prize for 2nd place this time, so as well as having to hope that Wolves fall apart we have to finish above Leicester this time too...

Poll: My morning poo-poo took 3 flushes to clear. Who do I call?

Yeah. Last year was an unbelievable effort, truly against all the odds, but this is the toughest test we've faced under KM, no doubt about it.

We're up for the fight though. It's going to be great to see KM and the squad take it to the wire.

This scrap could be more enjoyable than when we finish in Champions League places in a few years!

I just hope that when we go to Leicester then finish with West Ham we’ve got a chance.
If we have, we’ll be mentally driven to do it. Our experiences of being the underdog over the past Two seasons could prove pivotal.
Somewhere we need an away win soon to spark the belief. Could today be the day?

Agree with much of the sentiment, although I don’t think we’ll survive. We’ll be very strong next season though, and ultimately will have turned a spectacular over achievement in the championship last season that would’ve been hard to replicate had we not gone up, into establishing ourselves as a top end Champ outfit which is what I think we’ll prove next season. That’s a huge progression in a couple of years. Progress won’t always be linear but for me if we’re always stronger than we were 2 years prior that should be the aim.

Not to be a negative Nelly this season, I just can’t see us outpacing Wolves by 3 or 4 points in 14 games. It’s hard to see where the wins come from and the gap to teams like Villa is massive.

I too agree with the sentiment and we have to keep confident.
However without Wolves being bad, we would be cut adrift with Leicester and Southampton already.

Rationally, mentally, I agree. Emotionally there has been too much change for me to feel the same connection to the club compared to the last two seasons. I know we had a lot of change when Gamechanger first came in but the original squad had hardly been a success. I know we needed to do build quickly but it feels like it was with next season in mind rather than this one. This year was more a case of take the money, if McKenna can work another miracle, then great. We've brought in players but, Delap and maybe O'Shea aside, none of permanent signings seem ready for the Premier League. And, whatever division we're in, we'll be spending another summer looking for a striker who probably won't be forthcoming.

If I'm honest, the issue isn't really with McKenna, Ashton, the players or the club (though we really should have claimed more than a point off Southampton this year) - it's with football. The gap between the Premier League and Championship is too great. And with the promoted three seemingly going to go down again, it's just going to widen. We have the groundwork in place but to do what? Just struggle again in 26/27, even if we do succeed?

These are not good days for football in general, except for the cartel becoming entrenched at the top table.

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

Oh I completely agree about the general state of the game. It's been out of control for a long time and the only hope I have is that there is some crisis moment, perhaps another insulting attempt at a super league, that forces the issue.

I agree about the change of players too. It's crazy that a really top championship side needs huge investment just to have a chance of competing.

But these are still special days and a side and management to be proud of. Town have serious backers now and we're going to be dragged up the summit. I'm not sure some of our support realise the scale of the forces behind the takeover. They're not playing for fun and we won't be struggling to stay up next time even if we do go down this season.

That's both good and bad. Good in that the mid term future of the club has been secured and we've been rescued from death from a thousand cuts and what was looking like a drift to maybe even relegation to league two at the tail end of Evans. Bad because we're aboard the financialisation of modern football train and it's going to get more corporate and less real as we go.

But as owners go, I'd rather a first responders pension fund than a petrol state or faceless hedge fund. Feels as 'Town' as it gets in the murky world of modern day football ownership.

We will stay up. KM is the real deal and the players' spirit too. It would be a great achievement and another two fingers up at the cold hard money logic of the modern game (even if that is our direction of travel too!)

I don't think we'll stay up - not unless Cunha misses the rest of the season. Wolves have too much about them and now a competent coach. Moyes has dragged Everton away from the mire in double quick time. Palace were only ever down there due to injuries, plus West Ham and Spurs have a healthy cushion. We're just not consistent enough. Other than Spurs to Manchester United and Chelsea to (nearly) Fulham, we haven't been able to piece two good results back to back. It is a case of seeing this one as a rebuilding year for the top flight; going down and hopefully being in a class of one. It will help if Burnley, Leeds and Sheffield United are promoted and at least one of Birmingham and Wrexham stay in League One for another year.

Yeah, it's hard to argue with your reasoning there. You're totally right about the lack of back to back results.

I dunno though... We are a better team than the points tally suggests. We could very easily be 6-7 points better off and if we were, I think the whole complexion on it changes.

Both winters in league one and champ under KM we looked in a spot of bother...

We need the equivalent of the Wednesday fightback.

Broady to nick a winner today...

Appreciate the sentiment but I wouldn't say its an incredible achievement. We've only achieved 16 points out if 72 available. We are however lucky that wolves have had a mare themselves and its given us a small chance.

No one can predict the rest of the season. I don't see us catching any of the pack above. But we have that outside shot of beating wolves and Leicester. If we do that. Then it would be and incredible achievement.

For now. To use other posters early season words. Let's just enjoy the ride. If anything I'm looking forward to seeing our new signings playing more and more games together in prep for next season. Not writing this one off just yet.. but it's difficult not to look at champ and how we will attack it.

Now that is bold! We've made astonishing progress but PL survival is hard.
