I hope one thing we address in the summer is physicality. I looked at our 3 behind Delap at the weekend and never once thought they're going to win this ball back for us. On the contrary, watching Gibbs-White, he won the ball back if he lost it and wasn't afraid to put his body on.

I know he's a player who will split opinions, but I'd love to see Flynn Downes back here. If we want to go back up, we need some steel in midfield.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

You talk about the 3 attacking midfielders and then give a solution of bringing in a defensive midfielder

Agree about Downes. Imo it's essential we get him back this summer and I think we will.

We've struggled physically in the PL, but I think we'd probably be fine in the Championship with the current squad physically.

Just really strange that KMc is so aware of physical attributes required, and then brings in probably the two weakest players in his time as we step in to the PL with J.Clarke & Philogene.

Will be a really interesting summer to see how we shape the squad.

The attacking midfielders are lightweight, they get brushed off the ball easily and don't really win it back. But at this level, we see less of the ball. Next season will shape up differently, but we need a destructive base in front of the CB's that allow the front 4 to go and do the business.

We need them to be able to step up to the PL if we went back up and not fall into a 'good enough for the Champ, but not good enough for the PL' category. We're seeing that the current crop have struggled physically at this level, whilst like you say, they will probably be fine for the Championship. I think it's important we try and sign smart in important areas, not pin hopes on potential coming good eventually.

I don't just mean strength either, I think we also lack pace in the squad. Forest had Wood up top who's not going to run away from you, but they had a willing runner in Elanga who can turn a defence. We don't have any pace with no one willing to run in behind (except Szmodics). It's an area I'd like to see us address because it is far too easy to defend against if everything is infront of you and you're not being pulled out of your defensive positions. Without runners/movement to stretch in behind, the opposition defence and midfield keep within their defensive distances and we have less threat.

I suspect at the start of the season (and perhaps even in January) there was an expectation that 2/3 of the AM trio would be Burns/Ogbene and Szmodics, all three of who have a bit more about them physically. Therefore complementing that with a third AM with a bit more pace/dribbling ability makes sense. Unfortunately injuries have scuppered that and put us in a position of having to play the lightweight/dribbling/pacy players across the front three.

The more I think about this season, the more I think that it's the injuries as much at (if not more than) the transfers which have held us back this season.

I think you're probably right about Burns and Ogbene - both looked like they could put themselves about a bit. I think with one of them in the team, with Hutch and Szmodders as well, Clarke would have been a finisher and had the season to bulk up, and we wouldn't have signed Billy Jean. Those injuries down our right side have been killers.

All that said - i'm still not sure we'd have been good enough.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

It's a ngood theory, but Omari was always a certain starter and Ogbene and Burns would have been vying for wide right. Philogene is a strange one. Having failed to get him and then experienced the physicality levels in the Prem, it seems bonkers to have gone back in for him and even paid a premium to get him. To me Szmodics is, at heart, a second striker.
