Town v Weds 16/17 on 07:15 - Apr 16 by Blue_In_Boston | The perfect example of why extending the capacity would be a mistake. When things aren't on the up like the last few years we only have between 18 to 20k diehards who turn up regardless. I always associate our decline with new stands under Sir Bobby. |
I’m not sure the new stands had anything to do with attendances, other than the rebuild of the West Stand coincided with his leaving and the team being flogged off to pay for it. Even during Robson’s time, attendances were variable as shown by the average stats. Yes, we got into the 30s with some games, but there were a good few under 20k I always thought our base support dwindled to about 10k right the way through Burley’s time when that changed. Even our first ever PL home game against Aston Villa, in 92 crowd was under 17k. Mind you, watching Duncan’s mob was hardly inspiring. I thought the crowds held up remarkably well during Evans’ tenure. Let’s face it, going was more of an endurance than a pleasure for all bar a couple of seasons. With the change in population and demographics around who goes to football, I agree our base support is still about 20k. That is why if you have to prioritise tickets in the good times, young people would be no 1, not old fogeys like me. The young are the future of the club and how support is built in my view. I’d like to see the East Stand replaced not least because the existing one is 54 years old and shows it. The West Stand too needs renovating, roof and behind it in particular. A capacity of say 33-35k would be about right as far as I’m concerned. | |
