Our Left 10 and Right 10 system. 16:27 - Jun 25 with 1191 views | Marshalls_Mullet | Our performances didnt really translate to the Premier League after getting promoted, and I keep seeing reference to our system with; Right winger, and then a left 10 and a right 10. With Leif covering all of the left hand side. We should have a stonger squad compared to when we were last in this league. Should we revert to a more traditional 4-2-3-1 with LW, 10, RW? Might set us up better for the Prem if we don't have a system that hangs Leif out to dry if we return.

Even our legacy group know if we make it back, they are nukes off that level, and won’t be playing. That belief and team dynamic we had, you don’t switch it ion and off. 23/24. It was very fine margins. If you take 2/3% off our performances across the season, where would we finish? .., probably not promotion?
Our Left 10 and Right 10 system. on 16:33 - Jun 25 with 1152 views | SheffordBlue | One of the issues with the system last season was that the left sided CMs (Luongo role) struggled to read the game well enough to provide the cover for Leif when he went forward. Luongo was very good at doing that. I guess the million dollar question is whether the game model would work in the Prem with better players/players who really understand the system or whether even then it's too open. Hopefully the CM upgrades this summer will give us a better chance of making it work with players who have the physical abilities to do it in the Prem and have had a season of playing in the system by the time we get there.

Fair point in terms of momentum and team spirit, that's difficult to measure at this point. We potentially have an incredible back 4 at this level Leif, Greaves, O'Shea and Tuanzebe (TBC). There will be BIG investment in central midfield, and Philogene and Clarke are proven start performers at this level.

I understand the point about spirit and momentum helping propelling us upwards. But don’t understand the “if we’d been 2 or 3% worse” we wouldn’t have gone up. It’s like saying if other teams had won more games they would have gone up. They didn’t. We did. It is what it is.

Yep, Leif was still creating a lot of chances he just had no help in transition from our midfielders Need a mobile destroyer in there.

Read across to AV but we are a little way off that level for now :) I don’t know how good good enough is to survive a first year PL scramble where perhaps a more solid 4141 oop would do with the right players in those CMf roles to protect and progress the ball up the pitch, and the right player in that RW role to attack in the way we want when we end up 3115 or whatever it is!

That would take some squad overhaul. We are desperately short in midfield as it is and flushed with attacking talent to play behind the striker.

If he leaves, we'll be playing Johnson/Clarke at RB and they are very different players who like to get forward similarly to Davis. You could end up with three 10s with both FBs bombing on outside them, i.e. Hutch cutting on from the right in the same way the left 10 cuts in from the left. Essentially five behind the striker (FB - L10 - 10 - R10 - FB).

90% of Leif issues were 1 on 1 and looked simply like the step up was WAY too much for him. He’s not the best defensively in the EFL, at world class level, it’s a massive jump, no amount of cover could make him get goal side, stop lunging in, and read the game better. I don’t remember Mass having to do too much of that side in the EFL, we had more ball. Will be interesting this season, because the coaches at the level above were also world class, they targeted 70% of their play down that side to target an obvious weakness, and we never worked that out, which is really poor.., so he might get targeted more this season. Totally agree the CDM’s are crucial though, SO important those roles. How have we spent £150 million and only got 34 year old Sam in those positions? That’s criminal. How many do we need, 3 players? KM clearly wants Taylor as an option, but it’s just not his game .., although we don’t play an 8 so not sure what the thinking was with McKenna and Taylor. Same with the wide players, we sign ones like Clarke who want chalk on their boots, and spend a year trying to invert them.., square legs etc.

With better cover from the left sided CM he's not 1 on 1 though - there's someone else either cutting out the passing lane so the player doesn't receive it or supporting him. He's recognised himself that there's areas he needs to work on but in a different team with more Prem experienced level players he'd look a different player IMO. I'll be surprised if Prem teams aren't making enquiries about him this window. Mass was brilliant at using his movement to cut out passing lanes and occupy the space. His movement and covering often meant there wasn't anything for him or the defender to do because he'd cut out the option. There were lots of games where we didn't dominate the possession and have loads of the ball (only 12 league fixtures where we had 60% possession or more and 16 fixtures where we had less than 50% of it)/
