I was unaware of this rule. I wonder what happens if the wall steps over towards the attacking player just before the free kick is taken. Would the attacker be deemed to be committing the offence or would it be considered on where the wall was when the free kick was lined up?

you would do well to synchronize a whole wall to move. Would be fun to watch, doubt the keeper would be impressed as his sightline disappears.
