Full backs....how much of a difference they make. 06:54 - Sep 13 with 616 views | homer_123 | In terms of how effectively we 'can' play, our full backs are so, so important. I think back to Harry Clarkes run which drew the defender to allow Wes's wonder goal as a prime example. Having full backs that get forward and support is vital to us being successful. Davis was back at it last night....numerous times getting up to and beyond Jaden, getting crosses in or drawing defenders out of position. As always, the work you do off the ball is as important, if not more so, than what you do with it. As good as Jaden was last night, a large part of that is Davis. As a defender you aren't just marking Jaden but even if you double up, the late runs force you to make a choice and that decision or indecision coded you. Davis link up play, runs and crosses are fabulous. Of all the players not to leave this summer, I'd argue he's the most important to our overall team success. However, our system does require the other full back as well and on last nights performance we may have found a very very decent full back in Furlong. Assured, calm and looks like he already knows what to do. Can shuffle to create a third centre back when Davis goes, csn get forward and support from the right, linking up well with out two holding midfielders and the right attacking forward. But he can defend and defend well. Watch him off the ball, his positional play was very good. He might just turn out to be the best bit of business we have done over the summer. Defensively, albeit against shot shy Sheffield, in that first 15 or so when United were controlling the play and possession our shape was much better than its been, we didn't give up cheap opportunities and we looked more solid. Yes, we scored 5 and looked dangerous every time we ventured forward but for me that was because we built from a solid base and our full backs were superb. [Post edited 13 Sep 6:54]

Magnificent debut in a hybrid defending role giving RW opportunities to stretch the pitch. If we get McAteer and or Egeli going they’ve got the defensive cover there. Serious defender.

Second this. Great performances across the park so Furlong’s went under the radar, but based on last night, looks an upgrade on BJ for sure.

Full backs....how much of a difference they make. on 07:46 - Sep 13 with 339 views | Chrisd | I was impressed with Furlong. For me, we have not really had that balance on both flanks a lot of our good work comes from Davis on the left, it makes us predictable. So good to watch both fullbacks getting forward and having an influence on our attack last night, Davis was back to his old self which was good to see. Just like how Furlong got on with his job, no fuss but was very good in what he did. I know Philogene will rightly get all the plaudits, but I thought Furlong was very impressive too.
