2025 AFCON.. 13:59 - Oct 11 with 1008 viewsEverydayblue

African Cup of Nations 2025 is due to be held , 21st Dec '25- 18th January '26.

Not that our squad will be massively affected.. But I was reading up on Matusiwa. And although he is listed as Netherlands player.. He does have Angolan heritage. And Angola have qualified for Afcon...
He's played up to u21 for the Dutch.. So still qualifies for Angola at Senior level.
His Elder brother Diangi Matusiwa, represented Angola at senior level..

So, couple of questions here....

1) Does anyone think that Matusiwa may be approached by Angola to make an appearance at AFCON 2025?

2) Does anyone know how badly any of our rivals squads will be affected by some of their players being at AFCON 2025?

There must be a few players from Championship that will be on International duty during the tournament?

Just had a squint at Diangi's Wikipedia, profile is a bit different to Azor as he was born in Angola (Azor in Hilversum...for all you radio hams) and not quite as prolific career. Diangi was signed to three Angolan clubs so must have lived there for a couple of years at least. Probably depends on Azor taking a view on the likelihood of getting a call up for the Netherlands, has his chance passed ? I think if we make it to the Premier League next season he will still be one of the first names on the team sheet and the increased profile must make a Dutch cap more likely, although this begs the question of who is likely to stand in his way in the current crop of Netherlands midfielders ?

And to answer the second question, looking through the squads on Wikipedia I think none of our opponents are likely to suffer significant absences, likely to be only one called up in most teams at best.

Boro will lose their two to Senegal, and you’d expect Leicester to lose Patson Daka.

Edit: Removed the Ghanaians.

I wouldn't worry about it. You would expect a lot of speculation if he was being considered/considering an offer. There's no news out there at all. Also they have world cup qualifiers at the moment and he wasn't selected.

Purely guessing but I would imagine he's previously rejected a call up.

Truly impaired.

Ghana have failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON (finishing bottom of their group) so that takes Thomas-Asante out of the equation, so he is likely to face us in December.

I stand corrected, thank you for pointing it out.

I clearly need to watch more ‘fun with flags’ by Sheldon Cooper.
