Perhaps if one of the players were to release a statement after each defeat saying they are sorry for any hurt caused we can all move on more quickly without any further scrutiny?

Not quite got that right.

The players would need to say they are sorry that some of the fans are hurting.

Your version makes it sound almost like they would be taking responsibility for causing it and that definitely wasn't the case in the scenario you are alluding to.
