I get the refs are trying to let as much borderline stuff go as possible in order to let games flow, and by and large it's worked and I want to see that. Tonight's however let things go too far and was the poorest at the tournament by a big margin. At least no one was seriously injured as far as I know. I think the summing up pre tournament of the Paraguayan back line by the S. American football expert Tim Vickery was probably spot on. I quote, " A collection of nightclub bouncers " ! |  | | |

It wasn't all one-way either. Enciso was wrestled to the ground by a French player in the 44th or 45th minute with a judo performance that would probably have seen him get a warning in an Olympic judo contest! but no foul was given, just a throw-in the other way. |  |

Only watched the highlights this morning but how Paraguay got away with some of that is a mystery. In particular the one where the player pretty much punched Mbappe as he tried to make a forward run off the ball, about 5 yards from the ref in full view. Also the one where the player on the ground kicked out, as the BBC commentator said, Beckham was sent off for that in 1998. Not even a yellow. | | | |
