Not at all. It is the amortisation length, and I am sure all will have some form of relegation clause in (release fee, wage reduction, combination).
It helps spread the cost over 5 years, which is good for accounting purposes, but also holds the value of players who I suspect we either wish to keep if we progress upwards or we want to sell at a profit.
If it was an eg. 3 year contract we would be in the position in 1.5 years time to organise a new contract. If we were up then this could be a huge weekly wage increase, if we are down then they would not want to sign and we would have to offload cheaply before a bosman. |  |
