Walton and another deal. 15:12 - Sep 29 with 958 viewsITFC_Essex

Walton, always has a few detractors, but he’s been given a further extension (I believe he had a longish deal signed already). It’s interesting that with what 5 keepers we have on the books, we’re committing to an even longer deal on Walton. He saw a surprise start against Everton, and many pinned the goal on him. This could indicate that O’Neil does indeed rate him, and we could see him start more games in the league.

I always try and take these deals with a pinch of salt; I remember Woolfenden signing a somewhat longish deal which would have seen him play a testimonial had he seen it out, only for him to be moved on two months later!

I do rate Walton, he’s been unlucky with a couple of injuries during his time here, he’s had a few stinkers (Maidstone being one) but broadly speaking our most consistent keeper since Bart, and maybe.... arguably since Richard Wright.

I liked him as a back up keeper to Hladky, but never personally saw him as a number 1 keeper and even with Muric and Palmer etc i still didn't feel Walton should have been picked over them either. And now we may see him in goal over another new keeper. I don't personally see the benefit of giving him another extension, unless it's with a view of selling and maximising the fee, I just don't see a prem keeper there as number 1 or 2. To many flaws

His record for us in the Premier League is no worse than now 3 keepers we have spent considerably more on, to replace him. We put our keepers under a lot of pressure, I feel they have all been unfairly maligned given the opposition we have had, and frankly some of the defenders they have had in front of them!

I guess he's our new number one.

Pinch of salt yes, but we could realistically get a decent fee for him if we wanted to, and he could easily have pushed for a move a few times based on game time if he wanted to, so there's clearly a mutual appreciation there.

Good servant considering he's been so in and out - partly due to injuries but also due to high value signings going straight in.

He is going on 31 and played less than 10 times in the PL. Not sure he is going to command much of a fee. Maybe 2m max.

Palmer is about on a par with Walton. Solid championship keepers both. Again, we seem to have goofed with Scherpen, although aged 26 he may improve. So we have 5 or 6 goalkeepers, none of whom seem anywhere near top class.

The GK we have on loan in Spain might be the one longer term. He is only 23 and seems to be highly rated.

Not sure what happens to Slicker in whatever is happening with our goalkeeping department currently.

By all accounts, Slicker had a good season at Barnet, but unfortunately he's been injured so not even on the bench thus season so he could have a wasted year, which isn't good for a 24 year old goalkeeper.

If we stay up this season (very possible) then next summer our priority is to find a elite goalkeeper and off load the others, start again basically.

Oh and keep the younger prospect to loan out a bit more.
