Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2009 10:56

TWTD understands that Town are set to make a renewed attempt to sign Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy. The Irishman was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the former Waterford United frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The Hull move would have seen the Black Cats receive a fee of £1.5 million for Murphy, building up to £2.5 million with top-ups and it is likely that the Blues had agreed similar terms with the Wearside club.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

RetroBlue,

If you're not happy supporting Ipswich then why not go to QPR? You can slate the manager all you like there.

I still don't see why we haven't tried to go for Simeon Jackson from Gillingham or Beckford from Leeds.

I mean yes Beckford may have an attitude problem at times, but if he wants to play football at a higher level and regularly, then he'd sort that out himself, and plus with RK about he would get over it that little bit quicker.

But no thank you Murphy.

I dont think radical changes were needed at all anyway. We had a good enough squad last season to at least get in the play offs, just not the manager to motivate and lead them there.
Look at the impact keane had away to one of the play off contenders (cardiff) when he took over. He has clearly improved in the areas we need to, albeit not in the strikers department, but we can see he is actively searching. So if he can carry on from where he left off then i dont see why we cannot do well this season.
People need to get behind the team and not moan evertime a new piece of news appears on here. Fair enough after 15-20 games then voice your concerns but not before he has even got going.

Murphy was Keanes first choice a while ago so we should trust his judgement. He said he wanted to bring 2 strikers in and there are far worse players out there than Murphy and Priskin. Murphys goal record is a bit of a false one as a lot of games he has been playing left midfield not up front.

what about tommy smith from watford aswell ? he can play upfront or david nugent he hasnt been meantioned this summer, he's not likely 2 get a look in at portsmouth & he is a proven goal scorer at this level. and if keane wants a rock of a defender then dan shittu ? and move pim to left back as delaney is shocking.

Personally, I think Murphy could really come to a head with the Blues. Can easily see hime bagging 20+.

Priskin is far better, he is probably cheaper as well.

We need strikers that want to play for us, put in some form of effort and head the ball and stay on thier feet, after watching last season i would say anyone other than the strikers we already have or have let go would do. I can't believe what i'm reading about how bad these potential strikers are when we haven't seen them playing for Ipswich.
Give Keane a chance the poor sod hasn't really started yet.

Just seen this after searching on google...(see below) I know it's last season but Keane didn't want him then, why now?!

"Sunderland May Loan Out Murphy

Sunderland are considering loaning out striker Daryl Murphy to Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old has failed to impress fellow Ireland compatriot and Black Cats boss Roy Keane following a string of less than average performances for the Premier League side.

Daryl has featured in 12 league games this season but has failed to score in any of them........"

Duffers - I think you are like me in getting fed up of the incessant complaining about Keane and his choice of transfer targets! Those that are becoming serial moaners evidently all have their coaching badges, have guided Sunderland to the Premiership, have developed under the great Brian Clough, and won countless silverware over many years with Man Utd under Sir Alex Ferguson ..... obviously Keano knows nothing about football then! *WINK*

KEANO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am really excited about the coming season. I can see us pushing near the top of the table for most of the season. That's good enough for me. I see promotion coming within Keanes reign.

Maybe Keane thinks Murphy would be better suited to the Championship than the Prem?

Would rather have Priskin than Murphy any day of the week.

HE'S TOLD US TO POKE IT ONCE WHEN HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET MORE MONEY AT HULL - I AM SUPRISED IF KEANO ACCEPTS THAT AND STILL TRIES TO SIGN HIM.

SAYING THAT, WE DO NEED SOMEBODY AND I TRUST IN KEANE'S JUDGEMENT :)

ROLE ON SUNDAY - UTT

People seem to forget that what Keane does well is bring the best out of people. The squad is a decent one. We do not need massive changes, Priskin and Murphy would be decent additions but everyone needs to calm down.

Keane should not be receiving any stick at this stage. People hear a rumour and start giving grief/calling for people's heads. It's embarrassing.

Rumour has it that Ipswich supporters are the biggest moaners in the CCC.

This guy has turned us down twice already, I dont believe in giving 3rd chances to be honest. If someone would rather go and play for a nothing club like Hull who will go down this season instead of us then that speaks volumes of his attitude to me.

Stop moaning fellow Ipswich Fans.... until we have found out if the team under keane is any good and consistant at least!
I believe Keane will motivate the team much more effectively than Jim Magilton ever did.
Priskin and Healy will be better than the under par inconsistant stuttering performances of last season. Lets sit back and be patient to see how the team performs before having a rage!

dobbie72 & duffers...

I have to agree with you guys. Our manager has a wealth of experience when it comes to success. Let him show us what he can do.

TRUST HIS JUDGEMENT!!!

love him or hate him, keene is the manager and marcus evans is the club. They both say they are ambitious and I am sure don't give a toss what the supporters think or want for that matter.

Thank God the internet wasn't around in the early 70's, when a certain Bobby Robson was under pressure from the fans to go and thank God we had a patient chairman who believed in the manager he had appointed*. Remember Burley an Sheepshanks' 5 year plan? Building a team takes time and patience, two things many fans don't seem to have much of any more. Remember that the important bit of Supporter is SUPPORT!

We're in desperate need of a big hold-up striker if we're to ever employ 4-4-2 again. Wickham could be that, but you can't play a kid of 16 in every game of a Championship season - best to have him on the bench. Stead is clearly NOT your man for this type of role, and is not great when playing upfront by himself in a 4-5-1 formation either (or 4-3-3 as it's always reported....). So Murphy fits the bill perfectly. He is excellent in the air, for holding up the ball, for crossing and creating chances, & for his large physical presence, and will chip in with some goals too.

I'm with a couple of other posts that have mentioned already that Roy wants to sign '1 or 2 strikers'. Priskin would be incredible next to Murphy. Both very tall and rangey, Priskin is good with his head but a lot better on the ground, so he needs someone like Murphy next to him. BUY BOTH! Add Wickham + Stead to that mix, and we have the best quartet of strikers in the Championship.

After a couple of games with Priksin (or Stead) with Murphy (or Wickham) playing just watch the incessant moaners melt away from these message boards.... I think Keane's got it spot on - really hope he manages to persuade them to come to itfc.

RK seems intend on playing a 1-4-1-4-1 formation, as his prime intention is not to get 'zero points' from a game. The current bunch of stikers and pseudo-wingers are not likley to fill the sold striker role, so he is looking for someone who can. He knows Murphy, so fingers crossed.

I am sure the manager knows best, but fans can be a little concerned if we are paying up to £2.5M for a player who did not score last season and has not scored an international goal in 9 appearances. It may be that dropping down to Championship level he will be okay and perhaps the fee is lower than stated (we won't know due to the undisclosed fee policy). Personally, Priskin looks a better bet to me, especially as he is 4 years younger.
