Priskin Out to Fire Town into the Premier League
Priskin Out to Fire Town into the Premier League

New Town signing Tamás Priskin says he is out to score the goals which will shoot the Blues into the Premier League having completed his £1.7 million move from Watford. The Hungarian international has signed a three-year deal at Portman Road.

At a Portman Road press conference this afternoon, Priskin said: "I scored 14 goals last season and I want to score more this year.

I'm very pleased to come to this club. I think this is a very big step for me and I think I will really enjoy my time with Ipswich.

"I think this is a bigger club than Watford. The main thing for me is to get promoted to the Premier League."

Priskin says he has heard a lot about manager Roy Keane from his best friend and fellow Hungarian, Sunderland keeper Marton Fulop: "I used to speak to him almost every day, so I know him as a manager. I know him as a player because he was a really good player."

The 22-year-old says he prefers the ball to feet rather than in the air: "My favourite way of playing is to have short passes played to my feet, but I think I'm all right with crosses as well."

He says he is fit and itching to get going on Sunday at Coventry after pre-season with Watford: "I was excited when I heard about Ipswich but I've done my job in training every day and I'm ready for Sunday's game."

The Hungarian international will hope to add to his 19 caps and eight goals next week when his side face Romania in a friendly. His involvement in that game will see him miss the Blues' Carling Cup tie at Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

Watford boss Malky Mackay says Priskin's departure was forced on him: "I've known Tamás a few years now and have watched him grow as a player.

"We were in the unfortunate position of having a player with less than a year left on his contract.

"That being the case, from 1st September he could have run down his contract. There was no chance of us letting him go cheaply, but once Ipswich met our valuation it made sense to talk with them. As much as I'm disappointed, we have to look after the best interests of the club."

Town chief executive Simon Clegg wouldn't be drawn on any further transfer activity in either direction: "I'm not going to fuel speculation one way or another. The transfer window is still open and Roy's been very clear that he wants to supplement the squad.

"We're constantly interested in receiving offers for existing players who may not fit into the manager's long-term plans and, of course, if some people go out, other people may have to come in.

"We're not close to making any further announcements at this moment in time, but one thing I have found over the last couple of months that I've been here is that things can move fairly quickly."

Clegg flat-batted questions regarding suggestions that former loanee Giovani Dos Santos might return which were prompted yesterday by Roy Keane revealing that he had spoken to Harry Redknapp: "Roy's speaking to managers on a daily basis across the entire spectrum of football in this country and overseas and I think it would be wrong to fuel speculation about any one individual."

Elsewhere, Dos Santos has been strongly linked with Turkish side Besiktas with Espanyol, Galatasaray, Atlético Madrid, Manchester City, Paris St Germain and Inter Milan amongst the other clubs mentioned in connection with the Mexican this summer.

Tote and Paddy Power are offering 40/1 on Priskin to be top Championship goal scorer. The other players we were linked to are much shorter odds: Evans is 20/1 and Lita 22/1. Needless to say my money went on Priskin!

Stead is 50/1 (William Hill) and Counago is 66/1 (Paddy Power and Skybet) but I don't see them doing it and they might not always start, especially if a new striker comes in.

In League 1, Rhodes is 25/1 to be top scorer and Lisbie is 28/1.

Natural goalscorer with great composure in front of goal. All we need now is dos santos to partner him upfront!

Looks like we have lost the race for Gio. I'd be gutted if it's true. I'd give my left leg to have him here this season.....

Tottenham Hotspur striker Giovani Dos Santos could be shipped out to Turkish giants Besiktas.

The 20-year-old Mexican made just six appearances for Spurs following his £4.7m move from Barcelona before being loaned out to Ipswich Town.
He became an instant hit at Portman Road and scored four goals in eight games and Besiktas are interested in signing him for the upcoming season.
Barca could pocket 20 per cent of any potential transfer fees if Giovani is sold within his first two seasons.

I think we have to wait and see on Gio.

I expect Spurs will be happy to sell but if nothing happens by deadline day we could pick him up on loan again.

Good luck to Tamas, 14 goals last season, its a good starting block to build on and with Keane's encouragement I see no reason why he won't hit the much discussed 20 goals a season.

Any things possible this season, hell if Gio joins us again it truly will be a season to be part off!
