Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Monday, 24th Aug 2009 12:59

Boss Roy Keane says that some of the players who featured for the Blues at the weekend are unlikely to play for the club again. The Town manager says he hopes to have a busy week on the transfer front with several players coming in, but departures are also very much on the cards.

Keane said: “There are certainly one or two players from the weekend who are unlikely to play for me again. And I’ve told them that.

“I’m still learning about these players, but eventually you have to make a decision about one or two and say ‘I don’t like what I’m seeing’. That’s not just on Saturday’s game, but the end of last season and pre-season as well.

“You can’t keep waiting on people, you have to say that enough’s enough. I’m not saying they’re not good players, they’re just not doing the business for me.”

Keane says his task at Town at present is not so much about getting promoted as bagging the first league win of the season: "It's my biggest challenge because it's the next one. In your career, as in life, you face different hurdles and we have a big one ahead.

"The next challenge for us is not getting promoted, it's about getting some wins under our belts and if we do that, the rest will take care of itself.

"I was thinking about what we face over the weekend and I'm looking forward to it definitely. I'm relishing the challenge ahead.

"The problem has been for us that we have had to deal with high expectations since we have been back and I've played a part in that. I'm an ambitious person and have talked about taking the team to promotion.

"We have to deal with those expectations, but as bad as results have been, I think we are two or three players away from being a decent side and being back in the mix."

Meanwhile, we understand that Alex Bruce will again be captain when the Blues take on Peterborough in the Carling Cup tomorrow and may continue in the role for the rest of the season.

It is all well and good Keane doing the "tough talk " . He is the one who has had time to buy and sell players over the Summer . He is shelving the blame from himself . He will intimdate rather than motivate which is no way to get results and respect . I wish him a speedy exit from ITFC and wish the team well without him.

I'm so fed up of our "support", every time you go to Portman road all you hear is booing, the odd chant and constant, constant, grumbling.
You look at the prem sides which keep themselves in the division, they ALWAYS thank their fantastic fans SUPPORT through thick and thin.. Hull, Portsmouth etc, this is four games, we still have time for transfers and Keane is DOING SOMETHING... McAuley played far worse at times last season and not only was he never dropped he was made captain, wow, how he led by example.
Bruce played like a captain against Palace and led the team, Keane saw that, i think people should shut up and let him sort out this mess which was created long before he arrived rather than try blaming it on him

Obviously by my name you can tell I'm a fan of Garvan.
Such hatred of player is usally shown in the cases of Andy Marsall, Matt Richards and Quinn to a certain extent.

I've heard no discontent about Garvan, hasn't played well, but who in the squad actually has?

But since he's been on the bench mostly with few starts, I wouldn't be surprised..

rhinoboy11, yeah booing is ridiculous and helps nobody. But blindly applauding RK's every move isn't exactly doing us wonders either is it? It's all well and good 'DOING SOMETHING' now but he's also had the whole of pre-season and the end of last to 'DO SOMETHING,' yet despite having had cash to spend (£5m Sunderland deal indicates we did) we've ended up with a weaker squad which could well be about to weaken further. I like RK and I'm very glad it's him in charge, but razing to the ground a squad that wasn't miles off the play-offs last season doesn't seem like a way to improve.

OK, this is how i see it ...
What Ipswich are crying out for is the following. 2 pacey Wing backs who like to get to take on their man, get to the by line and pull the ball back to our fwds. We have not had this kind of player for many years. We also need a midfielder who will demand the ball from the centre backs (go and get it) .. The trouble with Ipswichs game at the moment (and not knocking young Pim too much) is that as soon as he receives the ball - he will hit that long diagonal ball towards our strikers. This ball may work 30% of the time but we dont have a midfielder who will pick up the pieces from the strikers and kick on from there. Get a midfielder in the shape of Greening, Tugay or dare i say Clingan and this would solve many problems ... you dont become a bad team overnight - just get that creative MF in and we will score more than we concede ...
Priskin and Counago upfront will cause allsorts of problems for many defences - just give them a decent run together and they will repay with goals and assists ...

No one mindlessly applauds so we can't tell if that works, but you're right in that respect. He has had a long time, but pre season never shows how good a team is, its only when they start playing proper games they show what they can really do. I wouldn't say he was razing it to the ground, who has he sold that played often last year? he's probably noticed who jim should have sold last year and now will, my point is what's the point in moaning about him changing a side clearly off the pace before he's even changed it?
also i know we came close to the play offs pointswise, but in terms of quality, we are miles off premiership quality and have been since bent etc left, i think talking about Keane's exit now is ridiculous when he's trying to change a squad we all complained about last year no end, even if its taking more time than we thought it would

Of course we all have opinions and they make interesting reading although some are downright ridiculous. Walters being mentioned in the 'cull' is ludicrous in the extreme and for whats its worth if there is to be a sale I would go with Garvan and that will be it - he did say one or two. On hindsight Roy should probably not have broadcast his intentions as the price of whoever he sells has now gone down. I know I am in the minority but is Delaney really that bad. He is a defender and how many goals has he given away this season - I have seen very game and very rarely do players get round him unlike Smith on Saturday and no one slates him. You all slated Macauley last season and he finished in creditably high places in the various player of the year polls. Ipswich fans do seem to pick on players and even when they are useful they still get hammered. All this hype about Bruce yes he is passionate but will never make a centre back in a million years as has been proved over and over again. Worrying times for ITFC.

rhinoboy11, absolutely agree that calls for RK's head are preposterous and agree that we're miles off Premiership quality, so if a cull is the way to get us nearer that quality then so be it - but we've replaced the players we've freed with players of lower, or at best, very similar standard at greater cost (why release Richards and Harding, Miller and Shumulikoski and Haynes and Rhodes to replace them with Delaney, Healy and Priskin?) so relieving the squad of further players at this stage hardly seems a step forward. If we make a genuinely promising signing this week I'll eat my words.

Am I missing something or was Roy Keane not the same person that signed all these players that now everyone wants shot of??? I mean Priskin has barely kicked a ball so needs to be given a chance. Delaney looks a total waste of money as does Healy. Is anyone confident that our next signings will be any better??
In order to compete in this division you primarily need two things......pace and power and we have neither, particularly in midfield where we are sluggish and get bullied off the ball far too easily.
PS I hear that fella Rhodes is a good player at Huddersfield !!

I'm confused.

Loads of posts stating we're rubbish. Then at the first sign of players being shipped out we get posts telling us all what class players they are.

I wonder who as really lost the plot here........

Trade Stead in for Beckford and a wedge of cash , get a decent centre half and the rest will fall in to place - easy!

Why can nobody see that we've had an awful start to the season because we have 2 parts to the squad - Magilton's signings and Keane's signings, and they just haven't merged. When Keane came in it was clear he was willing to give Jim's players a chance, but they aren't up to it. He did so well at Sunderland because he inherited a squad of genuine promotion quality. Therefore the sooner he gets rid of Magilton's deadwood and buys players that'll make Keane's ideas work, the better.

Most of you will be devastated to hear that this will involve patience.

Oh, and anyone who thinks Trotter and Garvan will get us into the Premier League are, in the words of Dizzee Rascal, bonkers...

It's a shame the start we have had. But come on in each game, apart from a few minutes it is like 11 people turn up and play without ever meeting before and they never talk to each other. The formation and ideas seem poor and there is no leadership anywhere. RK needs to sort this out in training and not just play the long ball game if it all goes wrong. If there is anything to say about a player it should be said behind closed doors and not in the papers. The new players are not looking the best, who is RK's scout?
So far and I say so far, we brought in a tom cat but instead we have a pussycat but the jury is out, we will have to wait and see and I hope we improve.

I fear for Macauley and Balkestein. Both appear slow starters and get better as the season progresses, but with the amount of pressure he put on himself, Keano hasn't really got time on his hands. Could probably get a decent bit of cash for them both too.

As for garvan, I am one of the fans who would not be too fussed if we lost him. Easily replaceable and never lived up to the hype. Light weight, great vision but lacks the pace and guile we need in the middle of the park right now.

Bring on some big signings hopefully in the next week!!!

Just a quick reflection on keanes performance so far ,.... signed healy and delaney who have now ben dropped. appointed macauley as captain because of performances pre season .. now dropped. signed priskin , hasnt played him. Sold Jordan Rhodes who has now scored a hatful. Rancid performances on the pitch which i have seen first hand. Made Jamie Peters into a central midfielder and now dropped. Fined by FA for for comments post match. However ...... at the wba match i was still glad the players were facing Keane in the dressing room rather than anyone else !! does that make sense?

Lets get realistic people.

First off, I would be amazed if Trotter left. Personal opinion about him doesn't matter. He is a hard working midfielder that fits into Keanes style of football. He has played 360 minutes of league football this season. If he didn't think he was good enough why would he play every league game so far? If Keane gets rid of him then we haven't been trying to win this season because we haven't been playing our best side.

The same can be said about Pim and Walters. Another 360 minutes this season and didn't start in the carling cup game is surely a sign.

Healy, Delaney and Priskin are unlikely as he has only just signed them. At the end of the day they need to be given time to settle down at a new club.

For me we have to start with the Carling Cup game, when we played most of our reserves. Garvan played just the one half, has been mostly a sub all season int he league, and considering Keanes desire for hard working, strong tackling midfielders like himself, he just doesn't seem to fit in. Sadly, seeing as when he has confidence he is easily the best passer at the club, he could be on his way.

Next up, Alan Quinn. Played the whole of the Shrewsbury game, has only featured as a sub, twice in the league. It deosn't look good for him as a fringe player, especially with Martin in to play on the left.

The third is probably Stead. Not been given much of a chance by the manager, having to start up front on his own against Coventry, before the manager decided to switch to a 4-4-2 but then bring him off. Again, against Leicester has to struggle on his own up front all first half before then being substituted at half time as the manager reverts to 4-4-2. A sub in the palace game, getting 40 minutes with a 16yo partner. Finally ending with another 45 mins before hauled off against West Brom. He is a player who could probably command a fee and is getting less of a chance than Wickham, a 16yo inexpeirenced striker. With Counago to come back, it is likely to be Stead on his way.

We can then only guess at any other possible transfers. MacAuley if the rumours of a bust up are true? Seems to have been stripped of the captaincy doesn't bode well for him. David Wright? Played the whole of the Shrewsbury game which seems a bit strange considering the inexperience of the rest of the side. Tommy Smith? Not really mentioned, but being shoved at Left back, a position totally alien to him seems a strange move for a player if you rate them good enough.

All we can do is sit and wait. IT could be a very interesting week.
