Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Monday, 24th Aug 2009 12:59

Boss Roy Keane says that some of the players who featured for the Blues at the weekend are unlikely to play for the club again. The Town manager says he hopes to have a busy week on the transfer front with several players coming in, but departures are also very much on the cards.

Keane said: “There are certainly one or two players from the weekend who are unlikely to play for me again. And I’ve told them that.

“I’m still learning about these players, but eventually you have to make a decision about one or two and say ‘I don’t like what I’m seeing’. That’s not just on Saturday’s game, but the end of last season and pre-season as well.

“You can’t keep waiting on people, you have to say that enough’s enough. I’m not saying they’re not good players, they’re just not doing the business for me.”

Keane says his task at Town at present is not so much about getting promoted as bagging the first league win of the season: "It's my biggest challenge because it's the next one. In your career, as in life, you face different hurdles and we have a big one ahead.

"The next challenge for us is not getting promoted, it's about getting some wins under our belts and if we do that, the rest will take care of itself.

"I was thinking about what we face over the weekend and I'm looking forward to it definitely. I'm relishing the challenge ahead.

"The problem has been for us that we have had to deal with high expectations since we have been back and I've played a part in that. I'm an ambitious person and have talked about taking the team to promotion.

"We have to deal with those expectations, but as bad as results have been, I think we are two or three players away from being a decent side and being back in the mix."

Meanwhile, we understand that Alex Bruce will again be captain when the Blues take on Peterborough in the Carling Cup tomorrow and may continue in the role for the rest of the season.

Agree with Duffers ref patience, but not ref the difference between Magilton's signings and Keane's. Magilton's mistake was never identifying his first choice eleven and not creating a team in his own image (i.e. based on cultured passing). He bought some potentially decent players (along with some who simply weren't up to it), but his tendency to chop and change destroyed the confidence they needed to push on.

Keano seems to be making similar mistakes with regard to not deciding on his best team or formation. Unfortunately he seems to think that having players that give 100% is enough to get us promotion. It worked for him at Sunderland but it simply isn't working here (nor will it). Whilst the core of the team needs to be made up of grafters, it is foolish to think we don't need any skill or creativity. Surely it is better to win games using a few players who give less than their all but do the business when it really matters, than players who put everything in but aren't good enough. Martin appears to be a good signing (at time anyway), but Healy is out of his depth and Delaney is simply not good enough.

The tactics are better than under Jim, but barely. At the moment there seems to be an urgency to get the ball forward rather than passing it around to make space and create decent service for the front two/three. I long for the days when we passed teams to death and going to football was entertaining.

In all honesty, I would rather lose every game and watch decent football than put up with what we have been watching for the past two seasons, but as it stands we seem to be moving backward, not forward. I fear that he is talking about Stead and Garvan when he mentions those who will never play for him again. This is such a shame as they are two of the only creative players left in the team. I hope that he isn't talking about Trotter, who although quite capable of getting lost is the only one (apart from maybe Quinn) who tries to get the passing game going. I would expect Pablo and Civelli also to be under threat if they don't do the business as soon as they get back in the team.

I've been a season ticket holder for 18 of my 32 years and I don't think I have ever experienced a period when the football is so poor, with so little prospect of a positive change on the horizon (apart from maybe Mick McGiven's brief and terrible tenure - God save us from anything like that again!).

Good comments Blue Suede Shoes - agree with virtually all you say - sound and well thought out.

Lets be perfectly honest here, Jim Magilton was a poor excuse of a manager, clueless beyond belief, and signed players who just dont cut it. Keane has inherited Magiltons squad and its the same players in that team that just dont cut the mustard, they really struggle at championship level. The Palace team we played, defended like warriors and there midfield destroyed us, and that is Palace. West Brom again tore us to pieces, and the majority of those players were Magiltons bottlers. Keane has given these lads a chance to step up a gear, and if they have not taken that chance which they have not then its time to get em out.

We need warriors at the back (Brucey is one) and we need some tenacious midfielders who get stuck right in and are not intimidated like the wet flannels there now.

We gave Magilton time and he churned out rubbish, look at the QPR fans already they booed him off at the weekend and he still talks from his backside to the press!

Keane is the man, at least he has the balls to tell it the way it is, and is not scared to drop his mates because they are always there for a swift half or a round of golf.

He is a 4 star general and he is going to sort our troops out in to lean mean winning machines!

So let Derek Davis keep writing his squaller and stirring things up and lets raise the noise levels and support mighty Keano.............!

Lets hope its a big week and some big players materialise, even on loan

I feel that the players on the way will be garvan, stead and macauley.

Garvan has gone backwards the last two years perhaps hes been badly managed but with keano being hes idle you would have thought he would want to impress.

McAuley had a bad start last year and i felt he would come good and he did and was my p. o. t .y but to do start slow again this season this has got to be a problem with him we haven't got time this year to stick by him and i can't see him sticking around if bruce has been made captain indefiently.

As for stead was a big fan of his when he first came in last year, scored some good goals but he looked sluggish pre season and as yet is not up to pace or at the same quality of last hence why wickhams been relied on some much.

I know roy has played down selling him at sunderland but he what steady was like from previously you would feel stead would want to impress.

Delaney and healy may as well be released as there not worth much in my estimation and would get them of the wage bill, roy perhaps regrets this now but at least he saved cork by paying 50k more than hartlepool would have paid.

What we need is a c.b, creative midfielder, and a couple of forwards depends on stead and a left back depending how long thatchers out for.

As for players coming in don't rule out rk going back for a couple of his reliable promotion signings who have become surplus although there playing tonight in

nosworthy a big solid defender
andy reid a creative midfielder who can score goals as shown tonight
maybe even carlos edwards linked alot pre season

shittu's been mentioned would be a quality signing

Beckford or ilewmo form wolves proven at htis level

or maybe someone who we will come up against tomorrow in mackail smith

Finally we must trust keano he knows what he's doing and has been in this situation before with sunderland.

seems to me that M.E. has not given R.K. the funds he was promised,if he has got some more funds available then we need a goal machine and quick(ebanks-wolves type of player)he got them up!!....

Perhaps Keane was too quick to back the squad he inherited. If he'd seen them play many times last season he's have known better. The biggest disappointment is Owen Garvan. I watched that full debut v cardiff four years ago and thought what a great prospect we had. Same with Bowditch. What is it about the way we develop (or rather don't develop) our young players? I fear that the one who would really have made good is Jordan Rhodes. And we sold him.

seems to me that M.E. gave Keane money to spend and he wasn't impressed with what he bought, hence why there is no more money to spend.

As to a goal machine then that is easy said than done. EVERY club in the league I am sure are after a goal machine, they are just extremely rare and hard to find. At the moment there is only one goal machine in the league this year, and Cardiff snapped him up for £4m

I hope Keane do something urgent, this isn't Ipswich style!
But remember, Keane was doing bad with SUFC until september till they suddenly started winning and promoted at last :p

GO ON KEANO!

BTW: I found the ipswich song with lyrics :D:D
AMAZING VIDEO! :D
I NEVER FELT MORE LIKE SINGING THE BLUES! WHEN IPSWICH WIN, AND OTHERS LOSE OH IPSWICH. YOU GOT ME SINGING THE BLUES

I just hope he brings in players that are proven and experienced - we have enough can't do's, won't do's, and never will be's, already on the payroll.
Fact is, as I have said before, the squad is not as strong as we ended last season with - had we have kept it and brought in maybe three correct, quality players, to add a bit of 'steel' and 'bite' to what we already had, we would have been ok.
We had the squad of players to be successful - JM just didn't know how to play them to get the best results. But a few carefully selected additions were necessary - that's how close I feel we were - yes were!!
Seems a long time since. And we are in a right mess for sure.

Under Magilton we had no warriors like Butcher,Wark etc, surely theres anouther Manuel Thetis out there who can be bought on the cheap and toughen things up at the back and a solid midfielder who will put fear into the oposition along with a striker like Beckford .No more FA***ing about Town get dug in for a battle

remember aswell that sunderland took a while to start winning under Keane, but they did and they won the league, and now look at how well they appear to be doing under steve bruce.. lets not get too upset

I have to say i struggle to see why garvan is so irreplacable, yes he can pass, but almost every game we see several overhit long balls into touch, he has no pace and he doesn't tackle, chase or hassle. He occaisionally scores or makes a good goal, but surely colback looks capable of that? and he chased, hassled and ran fast! garvan has qualities, but he's not going to boss our midfield, i'm sorry, but he isn't, i can see him going easily and i think we need a more potent goal threat with pace and aggression, we don't look like we want to score goals currently!

I have to agree with 'Rinoboy11 & Bigfish', interesting names by the way, well done!!

It does sound like all the small minded idiots that booed after the Leicester game are regulars on TWTD and have far too much CRAP to say. Either that or they are the ones that stay away from Portman Road & only ever show their faces when we play THE SCUM or are doing well in the league. Quite frankley you can keep all your negative comments to yourself and stick them up your ARSE, SIDEWAYS!!

Let RK sort through the crap that Super Jim left us with & we'll ALL move onwards & UPWARDS TOGETHER!!

Good night!!

Well said jesusstockwell....all this negativity is ridiculous so early in the season...its not even the end of august yet!!! if you were real fans, you would know that things can change very quickly in football. attracting players to the club isn't going to be made any easier when the fans are booing and slating players so soon in the season...imagine if a potential signing came to watch a game, hardly making a good impression, when you're booing the team 3 games into the season!!!

give the boys a chance, they will get it right, and once they get that 1st win, i am in no doubt that many more will follow.

KEEP THE FAITH!!!

p.s. i fear for garvan and stead from what keane has said, although i hope i am wrong about stead, believe he has a lot to offer us, and with the right service can bag a fair few this year!!

Half of you on here talk rubbish!
Owen Garvan has been arguably the most creative player in the middle this season, every time he has played he's steadied the ship got the ball down and kept possession. The players i except to go are: Mcauley and Healy, possibly Trotter and Delaney as well. I would hope Healy goes as well as Delaney as the two are total rubbish Trotter has a few attributes and alot to learn.. and i dont really care about Mcauley as he isnt a player who deserves to be captain. Bruce is someone who always puts his body on the line, is brave and wears his heart on his sleeve.. Always proud to wear the Shirt and Mcauley hasnt seemed to bothered up until now.. Comments please

It has to be McAwful getting pumped.
A total donkey IMHO one of many signed by Magilton.
Garvan has been nothing more than mediocre.
I can also see Stead getting his marching orders like he did at Sunderland.
I would like to add a few more players were going but I live in hope.

Well if Derek Davis is right Roy Keane sees fit to get rid of our highest goal scorer from last season with no tangible replacement, Alan Quin who ALWAYS puts the effort in and Owen, well I think he has been abused enough and I don't agree with the abuse.

No faith left now. but unlike like Roy I'm an Ipswich fan so I'll be there on Saturday.

Alex Bruce 11, i agree with the players you think might go, except i hope trotter doesn't because he's one of our few midfielders i think could really progress. But i fail to see it with garvan, he was started against west brom for that exact reason he steadied the ship as a sub, but he couldn't make a pass or tackle one way or the other and he is so slow! compared to the busy, creative display we saw from the likes of danns and ambrose in the palace midfield when we lost to them i think our whole midfield looks to be lacking
i hope peters is back in soon, his pace and skill is something we lack often in attack and he works harder and fights harder than people twice his size!
i also think we've actually missed norris, he always throws his body on the line and those bursting runs into the area are great.
I agree garvan is a good player and a reasonable playmaker, however, i think we can certainly find better and we could get some good cash off of him to help us do that

HateDerekDavis added 12:20 - Aug 25
Maybe this start to the season is just what we needed- highlight some weaknesses and deal with them rather than carrying dead-wood and settling for mediocrity. And I can't help but feel that if Norris, Peters and Counago hadn't been out injured, perhaps some of our weak areas would have been less noticable...
Not that anyone could ever fail to notice how poor Delaney and McAuley have been so far. Lots of negative comments about Healy too, but surely he was only ever brought in as a squad player? Wouldn't have got much of a look in if Peters and Norris were playing, IMO.
