Burnley Linked With Garvan Move
Burnley Linked With Garvan Move
Friday, 28th Aug 2009 07:30

Town have received a £1 million bid from Premier League new boys Burnley for midfielder Owen Garvan, according to one of this morning’s tabloids.

Garvan is widely believed to be one of the players Roy Keane has told is unlikely to play for the club again.

The Irish U21 international is contracted to the Blues until June 2011.

Yet another talented youngster who is being allowed to slip through our fingers because of a manager with a difficult personality. If anybody can honestly say they would rather see a midfield of Healy, Trotter and Peters (currently they're the only other options we have after the Keane clearout!?) rather than having Owen Garvan in the team you'll be in the small minority. He is the only central midfielder we have with passing ability. Am I the only one who doesn't really like the direction the club is going. We are well and truly moving away from the values laid down by Sir Bobby and George Burley (and Alf Ramsey before that) of building a team from relatively modest resources, playing good football and being a likeable family club. Instead Keane will strip the team, sign a few mercenaries, maybe get us promoted, then disappear, putting us back to square one.

Then again, maybe if we start winning I'll shut up.

Clearly a player that needs careful nurturing and Keane is not the one to provide it. Perhaps a fresh start and new challenge is just what the lad needs.

Just make sure we have a sell on clause!

I know someone who works for EDP and apparently a photographer has got a shot of Keano talking to his milkman so watch for a surprise signing .......his name is Ernie ...and by all accounts he,s fast , he is experienced ,he,s done the rounds, and we need a player to deliver for the forwards. 4 DAYS TO GO ,yogurt ta get your finger out Roy .

Garvan has been inconsistent thus far, but Keane obviously doesn't rate him that highly as he hasn't started him that many times since his arrival, preferring Trotter in the centre. Obviously that's affected Garvan's performances of late which is a real shame. Undoubtedly Garvan's got talent and on his day can run the show, however I sometimes wonder if his heart is in the game like Supple. Should he go, which seems likely, It would be a big blow with little of the way of creativity in the centre of midfield currently. Surely he's worth more than 1m and could prove a bit of a bargain at that price for a club.
I must admit, when Keane arrived I thought the one player that would really shine under Keane would be Garvan. How wrong was I!?

I agree with mak1, the prem would actually suit garvan better as you get more time on the ball and we know he can use it

Don't want to see him go but a genuine £1m would seem like a fair price. He hasn't really shone or realised his potential. The days of Everton or top 10 club etc being linked to him are long gone. Only a newly promoted club would pay a mil. No way would any other championship club (or Burnley last year). He's a punt for whoever buys him. Good luck shingles.

was the milkman Irish? No Kerrygold, no play. Anyway, if he was, Jim would have signed him!

Garibaldi - you're not the only one ... Not sure the club has a manager that can manage (ie. people). Hope I'm wrong. Unfortunately it does seem that he'll pay more for players that are no better whilst unloading youngsters for not much given today's prices. Seems a false economy as IF promotion was achieved they may want to buy another squad to stay in the top flight. Oh well, if Marcus Evans is happy with that ... but then promotion is all he wants as that's the way to get his money back given the rewards involved. It seems to me is promotion at all costs as it starts to be a poor investment after another couple of years which is why I would doubt too much money will be spent in the coming year.

Shame for the boy as I think with his personality he would find change hard but it may be that he needs a fresh start with a different manager (Coyle would suit him well methinks) and, as some have said, his talent might be better suited to the Premiership. WIsh him well if he goes.

I'm with Idnj & Garibaldi. Ipswich is a nice, freindly community club with a tradition for good passing football & happy players. The fans aren't demanding & if we're playing right, win or lose, I'm happy. RK & JM are knee jerk, snappy managers. We need a grown up with a long term plan to move the club uupwards. Imagine what Royal would have done with all this cash? Curbs maybe or even . . . Keegan. We've got cash but no management. Such a waste.

ByeByesheepshanks what are you on Keane has a plan to get promoted and he will do it , you wont be complaining when we get promoted , so stop having a dig and just get behind the manager and the team we have right now . and ipswich have a passionate Lively manager who doesnt care what he says why would we want a old man who couldnt give a toss ...?

Garvan could have become as good a player as someone like Scott Parker or Tim Cahill. All that is stopping him is effort imo. Leopards and spots. Get rid.

Big mistake ,best passer in the club who needs workers alongside him . At pre season ago Alonso was too slow at Liverpool and didnt tackle enough look at how they are missing him now , a good manager accomadates his players with others (Mascherano brought in too tackle )
If this story is true he will be going to the premiership where i believe he will do well under Coyle while we stay in the championship kicking the ball long .
The simple fact of the matter is in the price £1 million for him ,and we have have paid £50,000 for a new centre midfielder who has started more games this year ,figures just dont add up Roy

Always behind Ipswich. Always behind the team

. . . team? what team. The players we bought who can't play or the players we have who won't play or players we want but won't come or Jim's friends or Roy's countrymen or...! He's been in charge 4 months & he can't pick an 11. 4 games in & he's organising fire sales. You don't get that stuff from a good manager in public in 4 yrs let alone 4 weeks! Smell the coffee. We need a grown up.

Gutted. Garvs is the most talented player we've produced since Keiron. Always felt that he just needed the right partner to do his running for him and he would be a world beater. I see it as a failing of Jim and Keane that he has not fulfilled his potential. Particularly as Jim was in the same mould as Garvan and benefited so much from having Matty Holland next to him. Who has been Garvans's Matty Holland??

IF it is true then will be sad to see him go as he is a talented player who for whatever reason has not performed as well aas hoped. When he came on against Palace he looked good but started next game and was not good.

IF he goes then hopefully we will get creative midfielder to replace him.

Such a shame all our Academy talent is slowly being sold and allowed to leave the club soon Marcus Evans will have his way and the academy will be stopped or moved to Ireland instead

Yeah sure, this guy's investing all his money in our club just to run it into the ground. You guys, honestly. And the casual racism is getting really boring now-yes, they're Irish!!! A bit like Allan Hunter, Kevin O'Callaghan, Matty Holland(ish).....

Can't wait for Saturday to hopefully get the season rolling. COYB.
