McAuley Bid Turned Down
McAuley Bid Turned Down
Wednesday, 2nd Sep 2009 08:46

Town turned down a £1 million bid from Middlesbrough for central defender Gareth McAuley, according to reports on Teesside.

The former skipper was linked with Boro on Monday, but the fee on offer wasn’t sufficient to tempt the Blues into parting with the Northern Ireland international.

With the emergency loan window opening next Tuesday, the clubs could still come to an agreement whereby the former Leicester and Lincoln man moves to the Riverside on loan in the short-term with a view to a permanent move in January.

However, that may depend on the Blues landing another centre-half, with their move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Richard Wood having failed to progress as hoped yesterday.

ITFC fans are really cruel in their opinions and if you don't rate MaCauley there is not need to slate him as some are doing on here. The bloke is genuine and is a good player. He should never have been made Captain last season which obviously hampered his form early on but in general last season he was one of our best players as reflected in player of the year polls. MaCauley seems to get slated for nothing when 'hero' Bruce who gives away silly goals (as Saturday) gets booked unecessarily and gets sent off gets no stick at all. I am glad he is staying and can't believe how he can be compared to Pim who is way off the pace as demonstrated on Saturday. Pim may come good but I know who I'd rather have.

right i agree stow tractor boy I/we have done enough slating of mca, he looks to be staying and need to now put all our support into this side, and if we have competition for places it can only be a good thing, at least we aren't in the scums position,

Bleedblue.... how can you think that McA was 'one of the best centre halves in the division.' you have to be kidding! He can't header, fouls instead of tackling, and hes obsessed with the 'long ball' of which 100% of those passes end up ith the oppostion!
Should have sold him!

OI - Moaning faggots, NO ! Stop this dissing of our current players. When they've gone say what you like. Until then, back em or shut it. My mates and I will be looking out for the boo boys at the game. We catch you booing and not supporting the boys in blue, well....you're all gonna get a good kicking. GET BEHIND THEM ALL OR ELSE IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT IF THEY FAIL - PS Look up the meaing of the word SUPPORTERS. Then start behaving like one.

We had the 3rd best defence in the Championship with Mcauley in it last season so the unfair stick that is getting solely pointed at Gareth seems a bit unfair. Ok he has had a slow start to the season riddled with a few mistakes but like any other player, he is a confidence player and now he has had the captains arm band taken away from him he can now concentrate on his game. I thought he was our best defender against Preston at the weekend where Pim whom I am afraid to say I have stuck up for on this site had a bit of a shocker. I have faith that our defence and out entire team will come good, bit dissapointed in our left back state at the moment but Tommy Smith looks like he could make that his own if he can keep his concentration for an entire 90 mins.

We have this side till January now so lets get behind all of them and stop booing them and support them and get the Town up to the right end of the league, lets be the 12th man now when we are needed and not just when we are winning and getting the prawn sandwich brigade in! UTT

keanotheenforcer has just backed up my Factual defence of McA, thank you, someone else with some knowledge and appreciation for recognising a decent centre back.

Was gutted we didn't get Wood because with him and McAuley in the middle we would have had a solid defence. McAuley would not have to play next to Bruce who goes missing all the time and actually is the cause more so than PIm of his bad start to season. A player can only play one position and with Bruce going missing so much he winds up having to try and cover two. Then with the inexperience of Pim (I think he is going to be great in the future) but with the crap midfield we have had so far this season giving the defence no cover what so ever it has been a torrid time for defenders. Maybe with the better midfield Bruce won't go missing so much but he is still an average defender at best, talks a better game than he can play, but hey maybe he'll prove me wrong which I hope he does, but so far he hasn't but when he puts on that blue shirt what Itihnk doesn't matter he'll get my full support..............................

Jesus.

Pim made one mistake on Saturday, apart from that he has had a very decent start to the season, very much unlike McAwful, who hasn't been stripped of the captaincy for no reason.

And its forgotten bleedblue, that our success at the end of last season can be attributed to Pim's return to the side, where if remembered he put in a string of strong performances.

Im not going to claim Pim is perfect, for a CB he's very young and still learning, but to claim that hes sub-standard is highly unfair, and will come good.

Hopefully Keane has a better judgement than you

Probably a number of factors involved - Town clearly and rightly wouldn't sell until they had a replacement and that didn't happen. Otherwise we should have snapped Boro's hands off - although in fairness I thought Gareth had a decent game on Saturday - sadly for him and us those games are few and far between.

Gareth's major flaw is his distribution - one of Pim's strengths. Sadly both Pim and Gareth have been at fault for several unnecessary goals this year. I assume though, Bruce will return to the centre now we have signed Rosenior?

Mc auley and pim are not world beaters but on their day both are decent players. Thought Mc A was excellent most of last season and did well against preston ( after losing captaincy and probably a kick up the harris )

Anyway Wood might be good if he comes , but really who realistically is alot better than Mc A for 1 million?

I cant think of a CB whos better that would be cheaper or the same cost. Maybe wood is, Ive not really seen him play.

we paid 750k for delaney so why sell Mc A for 1 mill. What will you get for that 1mill ?

If southgate sells wheater after huth he will have 10 mill + to spend. Cheapskate !

I think he played a great against preston .. 2nd best player on the pitch behind Colback.

1mil is alot but he is one of the better defenders

Can't believe half of you lot. McAuley is a decent defender, and he put on some quality appearances last season.

Admitedly he's been no-where near his best this season...yet. He will get there and is worthy of his place in our starting 11.

Give the guy a chance. I don't think I know a more negative set of supporters! Sometimes I'm embarrassed by Town "supporters" who clearly don't know the meaning of the word "supporter" (look it up).

Come on now guys this all getting a bit silly, we have to build on the team we have, and now that mac has had the captaincy taken away from him, let's hope he starts to perform
I have faith in every town player we have, we all town united at the end of the day,
We have to back the boys now more than ever, as the additions keano had made will only
Make us stronger and for once I feel happy with what is happen at OUR club, I have a funny feeling that we will go to borough,
And beat them, this is the start of something special, and one game we all have to be out for is newcastle what a day that will be
