Peterborough Watching Town Target
Peterborough Watching Town Target
Tuesday, 8th Sep 2009 09:41

Town could face opposition from Peterborough United for the signature of Bohemians midfielder Gary Deegan. Posh boss Darren Ferguson made a trip to Ireland at the weekend and caught the 21-year-old in action.

Ferguson didn’t see much of the highly rated youngster as he was sent off after 22 minutes for a stamp, but the Peterborough boss says watching Deegan wasn’t the main focus of his trip: "Deegan is a good player and a lot of clubs are after him so I took the opportunity to have a look. Unfortunately he only lasted 20 minutes or so, but he wasn't the main reason for the trip.

"We're looking for some sort of tie-up with Bohemians so we had a couple of meetings about that before watching the match. There is a great deal of young talent in Ireland and we want to be active over there."

Town boss Roy Keane recently confirmed his interest in the former Shelbourne, Kilkenny, Longford and Galway man: “You could put him in the bracket of a potential target.”

Deegan, first linked with the Blues in July, is out of contract at the end of the Irish season in November, but if he moves on his former clubs would be due compensation because of his age.

Last month, TWTD revealed that Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy is set to join the club in November when his contract with the League of Ireland club is up. Neither player would be able to sign formally until the transfer window reopens in January.

Meanwhile, from today Football League clubs are able to sign players on an emergency loan basis for up to 93 days.

Let them have him, we've seen the stamp of player so far, if the player is any good he would not be playing at Bohemians in the opalfruit league 190 or what ever it is...this club needs to set its sights a little higher, plenty of quality has gone out from this club only for the standard that is coming in to be more than questionable.

Nonsense...other CC clubs are looking at him which suggests he is more than capable in this league. The fact that he won't be playing in the Irish leagues much longer tells you he is good enough.

No, it doesnt tell me anything other than he is unproven at CC level, as you point out "other CC clubs are looking at him" only suggests that he may be able to cope at that level.I fully support Keane but like I said before the club needs to set it's sights a little higher.

Not a clue Boz.When you have experience in something you can comment on it then. You have never stepped inside the gate of a League of Ireland ground and have no idea what you are talking about.Deegan is a young player who is just making a name for himself. How would he have experience elsewhere?Your comment about the "opalfruit league" just proves the clueless person you are.

Not concerned if he doesn't join us. Agree with RedX - best not to comment on the Irish league as I don't know enough about it BUT I do know that Healy and O'Callahan before him - do not look Championship quality. Just an observation.

Like I said RedX the club should set its sights a bit higher, we had lots of promising young players what is the point in signing more of the same ilk, we would have been better keeping players like Rhodes, Clarke, Haynes, you are right I have never set foot inside an Irish league ground, if I return to return to Ireland I might, I have however watched plenty of football in Northern Ireland and that didnt impress me either, I should be able to express my opinion without ignorant people like you calling me clueless.....like i said go blow it out of you a---se

Boz.Understand this. You cannot judge Gary Deegan unless you have either seen him play or until you see him play. You can express all the opinions in the world for all i care but when you start mocking other countries leagues and players you will always come across as clueless. And the Northern Ireland League has nothing to do with The League of Ireland either. You need to brush up on your facts before you open your gob.
