No Palace Move for Stead
No Palace Move for Stead
Tuesday, 8th Sep 2009 14:53

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has ruled his club out of a move for Town striker Jon Stead. The Eagles, along with Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday, were linked with the 26-year-old prior to the closure of the transfer window last week.

Warnock says signing the Town striker even on loan would be beyond his club at the present time: "We can't afford Jon Stead. I don't think we will be doing anything this week but we are still on lookout for a striker with [Stern] John out until the end of October."

Prior to the transfer window closing, Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll said that wages would probably prevent his club from signing Stead, while the striker was reported to have been offered to Sheffield Wednesday as part of a swap deal involving defender Richard Wood.

I think we should keep him and try to get the best out of him. He's a good player who needs a run in the side to get his confidence up. He & Pablo started looking good together at the end of last season.

I really hope he stays - he's my favourite player. Please! Keep him here and keep him scoring! He's a machine!

He is far from a machine, however i remember when he first signed for Blackburn from league 1 Huddersfield and scroed in his first 8 or so games. That was in the prem so he can do it but just not at the moment!

i personally don't think we have seen enough of him, itfc haven't had a consistant front two all season, for us to start scoring goals we need to get two front men playing on a regular basis, so they perhaps can understand each other. without that we arent going to score goals, who are our two best front men

I agree with the two posts above. Although I still put their failures down to an inadequate midfield which has now hopefully been addressed.

the problem being rk doesnt know his best side, with norris, civelli out,

whats he going to do with walters, i agree with above, once we have a creative midfield that creates chances for front men then we can start to single out forwards who are performing or not performing,

'RK does't know his best side', he hasn't got much to choose from. They just need to settle after seeing about half the squad disapear they just need confidence and that will come, watch us beat borough and you will see the green (blue) shoots of recovery.

Stead and Counago up front is our best combination, when they are both playing well and with confidence. The only way to do that is have faith in them and play them together both in training and on match days. This constant changing around by Keane is doing no-one any favours and obviously isn't working cos it is obvious he doesn't know who to pick or how to play and if you look at the table that also shows it is not working.

None of the strikers have really made a big difference this season(so far) so are we singling out stead? At least he tries unlike some Eg. Counago. He wants to wear the shirt, keep him, he tries his nuts of every game which he showed alot last year. People blame the strikers but why, its the midfield that doesnt give them service to there feet, all they do is pump big balls up and we havent got a target man like we used to. Dont worry the super blues will march up the league !!

OK I have mixed feelings about Stead. At the present moment I think he is our best striker - a lot better than Pablo and I think better than Priskin. But he is not a 20+goalscorer for sure. Isay - if we get two strikers better than him (in the long future) we can get rid of him but until then we should keep him and Keano must find a way to get the best out of him. He can score 12-15 goals this season if he is mentored properly. Moreover these J300,000 that were mentioned for possible transfer are not good enough. If we managed to get J850,00 for Rhodes we can get at least as much for Stead.

Worrying that an average striker is on so much money. Thanks Jim.

Just to add - jas0999 spot on comment! When Stead came last season on the very last day of the transfer window he was nowhere near to be an important figure at Sheff Utd and Jim should have done better to secure him for lower wages... but this is Jim...

It's a shame Roy sold Rhodes for the price of a cuppa and a Penguin bar.

Can't understand why he keeps getting shipped out at every club he's been at..to me he always seems to give 100% and from what i've seen of Priskin I don't think he can do much better...keep Steady and give him a regular place Keano.

Sorry guys - you can't fault Stead's effort and work rate but he lacks finishing skills. His effort alone will get some goals but he not the twenty a season striker we're all hoping for. A bit like the Danny Haynes'situation, you couldn't fault his pace and potential and he was fast and exciting up the wing, trouble was, he often arrived without the ball.

bring back alan lee! lee+ pablo = class act !
alan lee GOAL!
naaaaaaaah give stead a chance, keane is a bit of a BELLEND when man managment comes into the question, so that may well be behind his recent performances. he is a good goal scorer and will come good for us soon! as for M. E. he is a the biggest idiot ever to own a football club. he backed magilton with £12M and give keane peanuts in comparison, he wrongly backed magilton and now keane has to pay the price for M.E. poor judgement! GIVE HIM A REAL BUDGET AND GET THE PLAYERS HE WANTS NOT THE PLAYERS WHO PLEASE YOU DUCKS ARSE OF A WALLET! :)

Barmyarmy how did you get your name?

You cannot criticize me for wholeheartedly backing my managers with hard cash. I suspect you would be one of the first to criticize me if I did not back my managers with plenty of dough.

Jon "Munch" Stead should definately stay. Given a regular run out in 442 and he produces the goods. Shame he got that head injury against Preston as I think he was out to prove a point!

For Barmyarmy to call M.E. an idiot I can only assume that Barmyarmy has a larger and more sucessful business empire than M.E. - I reckon he's either Ben or Jerry from Ben and Jerrys!
