Tuesday, 8th Sep 2009 23:47

Midfielder Owen Garvan will captain the Republic of Ireland U21s for the first time in Wednesday’s European Championships qualifier in Estonia. Garvan has previously won 10 caps at U21 level.

The Irish U21s play on Wednesday afternoon with three Town players likely to be in full international action in World Cup qualifiers later in the evening.

Gareth McAuley’s Northern Ireland take on Slovakia at Windsor Park, Belfast (Sky Sports 3, 7.30pm), while Tamas Priskin’s Hungarians face Portugal in Budapest and Carlos Edwards’s Trinidad and Tobago are up against the US in Port Of Spain.

i know its only republic of ireland u21s but this shows garvan is a good player, i really hope we dont let him go, i feel he could bring something to the team.

And yes although he did not play well at west brom.... who did?.. apart from wrighty?>.. so if keane is going by one performance the whole team bar wright should have to go.

In my opinion owen garvan has major potential when he is on the ball, however at this moment in time he seems slightly off the pace when off the ball. He seems slow and almost lazy, he is not quick enough getting back or going foward at the moment. Dont think he will get a look in for us with norris and leadbitter fit soon.

At least someone appreciates the boy & recognises his ability.
From his point of view he would be better off with a team which has a passing game to suit his talent. He is certainly not lazy & if you watch him he always wants to be involved.
Good to see Jordan Rhodes doing so well

Nobody doubts the lad's ability on the ball, the problem is when the team doesn't have it. He's weak in the tackle and is one paced. I think RK has come to the conclusion he is a luxury the team can ill afford. Owen is not the sort of player that will help you get a result in a tough away game and who can really say he scores the amount of goals he ought to. Is he really half the player Matt Holland was?

Hya Blues Brothers.

I have been a blues fan for 14 years.
I used to have a season ticket until i moved away to New Zealand.
Been away now for 7 years with a vist 3 years ago.(i saw a few home games and an away game at QPR lost 2-1 :((( )
If i remember rightly i was still in the uk when he played under Joe Royle?

He always looked slow......great passer but too slow!!!!!

Now reading between the lines it looks like he still is slowwwwwwwwwwww???

To get into the Premier you need to be fast and physical. So Garvan needs to go imo.

Maybe not this season but my money is on Roy for next season.

Kiwi blues boyzz... i know of 20 of us over here lmao

Maybe he isnt the player Matt Holland wasor John Wark but they dont play for us anymore ,he is a better player than Trotter,Healy or Quinn who have been the ones keeping him out of the side!!
And Holland was playing for Bournemouth in the old Division 3 when he was 21 not the captain of international under 21s with Republic squad and 3 years championship experience

He's not great on the ball though. Occaisionally he has managed a decent through ball to one of his team mates and everyone thinks he is Xavi Alonso.

The truth is he look good against the odd poor team when we are at home and that's it. The rest of the time his passing is sloppy and one dimensional. Just beacuse you can't tackle or are slow, doesn't necessarily make you "good on the ball" Wak up and smeel the coffee people.

The guy runs around like a very slow headless chicken and has zero commitment to any sort of tackle. I'm very sorry ,but your'e not Arnold Muhren Mr Garvan, you're more like a ballerina at Girl Guide Camp.

I can't wait to see the back of this waste of time and money.

No-one disputes his ability on the ball, but as pointed out above, we're trying to assemble a side with players capable of surviving in the top division and I think Garvan has a little way to go yet, although he still has plenty of time to mature. Colback had a great game against Preston (although Sunderland may want him back) and Leadbitter has the potential to be even better, so he'll certainly have some tough competition for a place once Norris returns, as will Trotter, Healy etc..
Would like to see him stay and fight for a place, but as one of our saleable assets who knows.

Ever since the Chelsea game last season (in which I thought he put in a man of the match performance by the way) I've always thought as him as a must starter. As somebody else said it would be unfair to judge him on these first few games because not many people have been playing to their full potential.

I have to agree with the majority of posts on here that suggest Garvan often looks slow and at times really quite lethargic. He is capable of scoring more goals but hasn't quite come up with the goods. He may be good on the ball, but because of his lack of pace he needs time on the ball to pick a pass and against teams like west brom who pressed and were in their faces the whole game Garvan struggles, for a tall lad he also is pretty slight and I agree with the comments about his tackling. in some respects he is similar to danny haynes, came through the youth set up, has potential but hasn't shown tell tale signs that he's going to fulfill that potential. he often looses the ball cheaply and then doesn't have the pace to win it back, then lunges in with a poor, mis timed tackle giving away a free kick and picking up a booking in the process (1 of chelsea's goals from a free kick was conceded by Garvan !!) in my opinion not quite up to the grade if we are serious bout getting to the prem

Still very young , skilful , ablity to pick a pass and a lot of experience for his age , but he now needs to step up to the next level , his improvement has slowed over the last year or so.
Needs to get stronger and faster.
Also can he not run with his arms by his side instead of up in the air like a great big pansy !! I know this sounds quite trivial but if you were marking someone who ran like Micheal Barrymore you would be more confident of winning 50/50s.

I would also say he is prob the slowest player in our squad this season, he is as slow as campo was last season except campo was 33 and not 21 like garvan is, needs to get quicker and stronger

Never lived up to potential, and never will, so much for next gerrard, shame really; always liked him.

Sadly Garvan, like a few of our promising young players over the last few years, has not developed in the way we hoped for or need. He has had plenty of opportunities. Nothing personal to him but to me he's just another "disappointment" that hasn't made the grade at Ipswich. So it's time to move on - both for him and us.

I believe there's something personal going on. In what little we've seen of Garvan this season I don't think many would argue with the fact that he's been far more effective ( and certainly creative) than Trotter and Healy in the central midfield. I think that with RK it's a case of 'if the face don't fit' as with Danny Haynes (and Shane Supple?). As for the comparisons with Matt Holland, give it a few years and let's see who commands the biggest transfer fees and makes the most senior appearances for their country.

Although i have not yet been to happy with all the decisions Keane has made, stopping Garvan from playing for us is correct.
Garvan has been our weakest player for the 4 seasons hes played so far, Too slow, no ariel ability, no physical power, no tackling ability, awful positional awarness. People keep saying hes a "great" passer though, however if you watch him carefully especially away from home he'll maybe complete only half of his passes, therefore not worth a spot in a team looking to move upwards!

I have always liked garvan and hope he stays. To be fair to him its hard for any midfielder when he is in and out of the team each weak and doesnt know whether he is coming or going like he was last season. When he came on against crystal palace he created a few chances for us and created our goal. Give him a chance.
