Keane: Unbelievably Bad Goals Saturday, 26th Sep 2009 21:51
Boss Roy Keane once again bemoaned his side’s defending as the Blues lost 4-0 at home to Newcastle United. The Town manager felt his team conceded “unbelievably bad goals” as his team’s winless league run stretched to nine matches.
Keane said: "The game was dead and buried by half-time. We conceded some unbelievably bad goals and we just have to defend better.
"I don't know if Nolan has scored a hat-trick before but he won't get an easier chance to get one. He must have thought it was Christmas.”
The Blues boss says individual errors have been costing Town all season: "We started OK but the first goal was a bad goal to give away. The lad Nolan scored loads of goals from set pieces at Bolton, yet we let him have a free header.
"It was bad defending for the second goal as well and that knocked the confidence of the players and it was always going to be hard from that point, given the experience of the Newcastle players and their defensive record this season.
"If we are opened up with good play then fair enough, but we have been giving goals away from the start of the season and it's unacceptable."
Keane had no complaints about the boos which greeted the final whistle: "I'm not daft, a lot of supporters voiced their opinions at the end but that is fair enough. They pay their money and they are entitled to that. But we will keep going.
"We knew it was a big day for the fans and I thought they were outstanding today. It's very easy to support your team when you are winning every week but the vast majority of the fans stayed right behind the team to the end and hopefully they will see that we have young players out there that need their backing.
"We are short of confidence and we need them to keep behind the team and they did that.”
Keane says the various tributes to Sir Bobby Robson were not a distraction for his players: "It didn't affect the team, what affected them was conceding the second goal so quickly after the first.
"It should have been something to enjoy, there was a good energy in the stadium but we keep giving teams a helping hand.
"You have to cope with set pieces, it's basic stuff. There are no magic wands and confidence comes with results. The longer this run goes on then the harder it will get.
"We have our pride and it has been massively dented. It is hard to take, but we have the chance to start to put it right against Sheffield United on Tuesday.
"But if we give goals away like we did today, we will get beat on Tuesday. There is no doubt about that."
Newcastle caretaker-boss Chris Hughton felt his side put in a display which was a worthy tribute to Sir Bobby Robson: "This group of lads were all at the memorial for Sir Bobby on Monday and that was an emotional occasion.
"The players were delighted to attend and we all tried to put on a performance for Sir Bobby. It was a special result and a special performance.
"It's a wonderful feeling to go in at half-time with the cushion we had and it doesn't happen very often.
"It's a massive boost to go top. The most important thing is that we are fighting at the right end of the table.
"There are a lot of teams around us who are not dropping many points so to go top is testament to this group of lads."

DID ANYONE SERIOUSLY THINK WE WERE GOING TO BEAT NEWCASTLE??? ERR I FOR ONE DID NOT....!! NEWCASTLE ARE QUALITY, THEY ARE A PREMIERSHIP TEAM AND ARE TOP OF THE TABLE FROR A REASON. I HAD A FEELING WE WOULD GET A THRASHING AND HOW RIGHT I WAS. BUTT AND SMITH ABSOLUTELY RAN THE MIDFIELD, AND THEY SHOULD ON THE MONEY THEY ARE ON. WE HAD 3 PLAYERS ON THOSE 2 AND THEY ABSOLUTELY CRUISED THROUGH IT, WHAT LET US DOWN WAS THE SAME OLD STORY, S***E DEFENDING, AND ONCE WE WERE 2 DOWN THAT QUICKLY BOY DIDNT THE HEADS DROP. THERE WAS NO WAY BACK. BRAMALL LANE WILL BE ANOTHER DEFEAT, YOU CAN BE SURE OF THAT. WE REALLY WERE NOT READY FOR THIS GAME NOW, WE NEEDED A COUPLE OF GAMES AGAINST TEAMS WE MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE OF A RESULT FROM NOT THIS! I THINK THIS LOSS HAS SHATTERED CONFIDENCE BIG TIME. WE NEED M.E TO BACK HIM WITH GETTING A COUPLE OF ROCKS AT THE BACK AND AIM FOR MID TABLE, BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS THAT WILL BE OUR HIGHEST POSITION....... KEANE OUT IS A RIDICULOUS CALL, AND THOSE PEOPLE CALLING IT SHOULD WIND IT IN AND GET ON WITH SUPPORTING YOUR TEAM AND MANAGER. SHAME ALL THOSE EXTRA PEOPLE WHO TURNED UP YESTERDAY CANT MANAGE TO DO IT EVERY WEEK.

Agree Roy - but when are you going to sort out the Defence? Please also bring in a couple of strikers and a new goalkeeper. Richard Wright has sadly cost us so many goals it is untrue.

ODDBALL - ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A CLUELESS COMMENT. MAGILTON HAD 12 MILLION IN HIS FINAL YEAR AND FINISHED 9TH, 6 POINTS OF THE PLAY OFFS AND GIVING US ANOTHER SEASON OF RUBBISH FOOTBALL. HONESTLY WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE, HAVE WE GOT SOME RIGHT TO GET PROMOTED BECAUSE OF OUR HISTORY. TEAMS THAT GO UP HAVE QUALITY, CONFIDENCE AND BELIEF, AT THE MOMENT WE ARE STRUGGLING ON MOST. WE HAVE NO CHANCE THIS YEAR WITH THE QUALITY IN THIS LEAGUE, THE TRUTH IS THE SEASON IS OVER, PEOPLE SHOULD JUST GO AND SUPPORT THEIR CLUB AND LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON. SACKING AND HIRING MANAGERS EVERY FIVE MINUTES IS CRAZY, WE GAVE MAGILTON 3 YEARS AND CASH IN HIS SO CALLED OPERATION PREMIERSHIP, AND YOU THINK 9TH PLACE WAS A GOOD FINISH! PATHETIC WHEN KEANE JOINED THIS MESSAGE BOARD WAS FLOODED WITH PEOPLE WETTING THEMSELVES, SO DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND TAKE YOUR NEGATIVITY AND UNREALISTIC COMMENTS ELSEWHERE!!!!!! UP THE TOWN

Bring Garvan back Keano, he's twice the player Trotter is and a few bad games do not make him a bad player. As appealing as it may sound to ruin the town career of another good prospect, along with Rhodes. The lad has talent, and is better than a load of the wasters we are playing out there right now. Or even better just go, and take your signings back with you, i'll even pay for the flight back to Ireland.

And I quote: "Being a football manager is a high pressure business. If the team loses, the manager is blamed, although often he is helpless to do anything about it. His life is dictated by what eleven men do on the football field." Sir Bobby Robson, 'Time on the Grass' - published in 1982. Now first things first, I AM NOT, REPEAT AM NOT using this to draw a parallel between Sir Bobby and Keano. I will be the first to admit that I sat in the stands yesterday with my head in my hands trying to figure out what's going on, but one thing that did cross my mind is that you cannot dump it all on the manager - from some of the comments I've seen of late you'd think that Keano had been pulling his boots on and playing all eleven positions this season! Yes I'm concerned, yes Keano does need to pull his finger out and work on turning this around, and yes I will even say I can't see the point in Damian Delaney. Changing managers now would be a futile gesture as by the time anyone new has bedded in we'll have dropped more points and be even more in the mire. I still believe we can turn it around (we've still got 37 games left) and that Keano is the man to do it - but I'll also be the first to admit it if I turn out to be wrong. Also, to all you fickle ones out there, make your mind up. There were 4 lads sitting a couple of rows in front of me yesterday singing 'Keane out' yet one of them had Keano printed on the back of his shirt! Sort it out.

The Truth - 'look forward to next season' - I won't becuase the way we are going it will be in Division One. I agreed that Magilton should go and people forget the rubbish football that was served up over the 3 years he was in charge. Yes we had a good home record one season but were very poor away. We were going noweher with Jim but unfortunately we will go down if we do not get in TWO centre backs. We have to get real here this Club is on the brink of football in the 3rd tier - Charlton and Norwich never thought it would happen nor did Leeds or Forest the list goes on but it will happen to us is swift action is not taken. I would give Keane to the end of October and if we are still in the bottom 3 get rid. I too would like Curbishley but isn't there a snag with a previous employer over compensation still to be sorted ?. People laughed at me when I said I wouldn't mind Boothroyd at this rate he will be changing places with us. Don't you fans realise how serious this is.

I'm not a footballer but in my job I have pride. If I do a job well I'm happy. If it goes Pete Tong I try and work out why and try not to repeat my mistakes and yes my pride takes a bashing. Question: Did Ipswich, with the eyes of the World on them, play with pride yesterday? Do they know what pride is? One of the biggest disappointments yesterday was the lack of fight and pride. We went 3-0 down and we rolled over. Prepare for a similar score at Sheffield United unless we can play with some pride on Tuesday night. Keane should be given time we're not Tottenham or Man City. Changing manager every season does not buy success. I would like to suggest the use of shooting boxes so we can learn to hit a football more than 6 yards. Why we always seem to want to dribble the ball in I have no idea.

After everything ive seen this season i am very worried we could go the same way as Southampton, Charlton, Norwich, Leeds etc. They all thought they were too good to go down aswell. 4 points out of 27 is simply not good enough. To add to my worries i cant see us getting anything on tuesday night. Sort it out Keane yesterday was woeful.

Didn't expect us to get anything out of yesterday's game - none of our midfield has the quality or experience of Butt, Smith, Nolan & Taylor (must have about 1000 Premier League games between them). Sometimes you can learn more about the players in defeat than victory, and the only positive I took from yesterday's game was Liam Trotter - stuck to his job protecting the centre-backs for the whole match, got a few tackles in, looked composed on the ball and rarely gave it away. Unfortunately, Leadbitter was pretty anonymous and Colback looked like a rabbit startled in headlights, so their link up play with the front 3 was pretty poor. (Walters, Priskin and Edwards didn't see enough of the ball to be able to pass judgement on their performances.) The entire defence (and keeper) made appalling individual errors yesterday which led to the goals - hopefully we can write it off as a bad day at the office, get the lads back on the training pitch working hard, and move on to next game...

Keanes only achievment will be to make Jim Magilton look like a f;ckin good manager. M E needs to give him more money alright, as a pay off & f;ck off .He is transforming ITFC ,turning a good club into a joke.I pray he is not still in charge when we play our derby game against Norwich next season .Sheffield Utd ,then Barnsley !,if we have anything less than a convincing win against the latter, Keane should not even bother coming back,.

I don't know why people are giving Wrighty stick. If it wasn't for him we would have conceeded 4+ goals every week and RK would definately have been sacked by now. Anyone see his performances against Coventry and Brom? Some world class saves. The whole team were abysmal on Sat. and we can't even blame Stead. . . . .

Struggling to find a single positive to talk about with town at the moment. The Only one that springs to mind a bit was Peters coming off the bench still looked committed etc. Other than that, Balkestein and Delaney, woeful defending at times. Nothing in midfield, not a single player yesterday looked like he was going to do anything remotely interesting when on the ball. Love Walters but he just needs to stop being used as a striker, it's not working. We desperately need some bottle out there. Newcastles fans were fantastic, ours were as if they had just come from a funeral. Keano needs to stop changing the bloody team, start figuring out who your starting 11 is and stick with it at least for a few games! COYB!! I still have faith.........sort of!!!

Yesterday was a sad day for town fans world wide - remembering Sir Bobby for all the right reasons and the teams performance for all the wrong but I do not believe that we will be the last team to be beat 4-0 by a Newcastle team who have managed to bring themselves back from such lows that relegation from the Premiership bring to move onwards and upwards. I love my club and have for 33 years now and so I will support the team the manager and all that is ITFC through the good times and the bad. While changes are needed in the team, defensive and upfront the one thing that shouldn't change is the support of this club, it should be unconditional Keane has been bought into the club to take us back to the Prem and ok it doesn't look great now and depressing at times what would we truly gain from sacking Keane or if he was to walk - who would employ him again he be seen as a quitter and not worth a punt! The club needs our support now more than ever no the boooooooooooooos it does no one good. We need to show this league the team, Keano and Marcus Evans that we are united as a club - with the team lacking confidence we have to show we have confidence in the lads playing for us and sing your hearts out for the lads. If it can give them that bit extra to change throw everything they've got for a win in every game then we need to give them that bit extra on the terraces its hard I know but if we can sing the lads to a win then they will want to win to hear us sing - who's with me - proud to be a blue and standing tall!

I dont blame the players and i dont blame keane. I blame the upstairs.... forgiving Sheepshanks his wrongs, he was a football man and in most cases knew what was best for Ipswich and its community. I am extremely worried by the fact we now have 2 people in charge of OUR club who are not football orientated. Instead of picking a manager that was right for this club, they picked a 'name' for the brand. Is this 'football' good for the brand evans??? is this good for business??? I think not.... I have seen some lows during my time as a town fan, but Saturday far far surpassed any of those bad feelings. The team look afraid to pass the ball about, is this instruction from keane??? get it forward and play the percentage game??? i dont know, but you can see from the original blue players (e.g. Pablo, Walters) that they care... and they do not like what is going on.... the fans chant 'KEANO SORT IT OUT'.... but im sorry to say, this is him sorting it out... he doesnt know how to... And i am very very worried where our club is headed. Thanks for reading, kev B

Our team - my view.. Richard Wright - best player so far this season (despite yesterdays performance) -which says it all really. We need 3 new defenders sadly.. Firstly David Wright needs to come back in at RIGHT back. As much as I love Alex Bruce's commitment and attitude he is prone to far too many mistakes and a squad player at best. Pim is one for the future - too wreckless at the moment & can't understand why someone of his stature gets knocked off the ball so easily. McAuley - had bad start last season but came good - not a captain but would be hasty to show him the door - we need him to find his form - and quickly. Delaney plays like he's never seen a football before. Thatcher - probably the steel that we need at the moment but too injury prone and well past his best. Time for Marcus to get his cheque book out (again) and bring in Shittu & deMerritt in the centre...as for the left we had 2 players more than capable of filling that role in Harding & Richards but Keane (& jim) didn't fancy them for some reason? **************** We definately need an experienced "captain" figure in the middle alongside Leadbitter until Norris is fit again..think Keane was too hasty letting Campo go. Walters' form has been far too up & down over the last 2 years - you can't blame him cos he's getting switched from right to left then up front and back again. Edwards will be a brilliant signing but only when we're heading up the table. Feel a bit sorry for the stick Lee Martin gets - think he'll come good but probably more of a squad player at best. Quinn - a trier, probably too inconsistent but his experience is needed in the starting 11 now. Trotter - too slow - out of his depth. Garvan - needs to sort his head out. Peters - always gives his all & deserves a good run in the team - maybe on the left. ******** Counago/Stead/Priskin - all 3 will struggle to hit double figures if they're continually swapped around and a genuine partnership is not allowed to form..time to decide on your favourite 2 Keane and STICK WITH THEM.

The only thing I disagree with Lightningboy is about the strikers. I completely agree about sticking with two as your starting strikers, but which of those three you named do you honestly and truly believe will net 20 goals this season? Progress in this division comes from scoring goals, and plenty of them. Phillips, Ebanks-blake, Mendonca, Ashton (scummer but scored goals), all of them had one thing in common; they could score goals at this level. Ever since we lost the Bent and Kuqi partnership we haven't looked like having an exciting attacking line. It's so depressing to see our football at times. Stop trying to walk the ball into the bloody net all the time!!! A couple of ugly wins would go down a treat even if just to boost the confidence of the team!

Yes - we did concede very poor goals - Wright was at fault for at least one. But we have no defence - so why is everyone surprised? Bruce is skipper ? Christ! We did better after he'd gone off. Balkestein is very young and needs a proper CB beside him. Delaney is a clown. Rosenior? What does he do - why is he in the team? Edwards - again, why? I am not Garvan;s biggest fan, but both him and Quinn must be a better option that Colback? We know we are short, we know we have injuries, but lets play to our strengths - whatever they are. Pabblo has to start - every game. Priskin? Have we ever had a worst signing? Le Pen did more... Shocking.
