Sheffield Wednesday central defender Richard Wood has agreed to join Coventry City on a loan deal which will be made permanent in January. Town made a move for Wood in August and were believed to be monitoring the situation after the Osset-born defender was transfer-listed by the Owls.

Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman, who is understood to have paid £500,000 for the 24-year-old, said: I'm delighted to get Richard, who I have admired and targeted ever since I came back from Spain.

"I know there's been a lot of interest in him from other clubs, so it's great news that he's decided to sign for us and I'm very looking forward to working with him."

tort63 added 16:26 - Nov 18 A few weeks ago I would have been gutted by this news but we now have no less than 4 centre halves who are all starting to show a bit of form in McAuley, Smith, Bruce & Delaney. And with Pim & Troy Brown waiting in the wings as well why on earth would we want to pay through the nose for somebody who is no better than what we already have and seems to think he is worthy of a chunky contract to boot! The only reason he's left the Owls is because they wouldn't meet his extortionate pay demands.

OnlyOneSirBobby added 19:32 - Nov 18 im not too bothered about this to be honest, yes hes a good player, and spoken highly of by wednesday fans, however i dont feel like he is the sort of player that will take us to the next level. the fact that he has gone to a team like coventry sort of says it all, they aint going anywhere anytime soon. a lot of you will say, well neither are we, but despite our current league position i believe we are in a much better situation to push on. we need top class players like edwards, leadbitter and rosenior to join and to move us up...richard wood isnt in that class of player. keep the faith guys, good things come to those who wait, and boy have we waited!!
