Keane: We Could Have Scored Seven
Keane: We Could Have Scored Seven
Saturday, 12th Dec 2009 19:22

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues could have scored six or seven goals against Blackpool rather than just three. The Town manager was pleased that Town have moved out of the bottom three but says it’s not something to celebrate.

Keane said: "We're out of the bottom three and it's a relief when you've been there since the start of the season. But it's not something we're proud of. Don't worry, we won't be celebrating.

"We could have won by six or 7-1, given the chances we created, especially in the second half.

"They were unbelievable, thank God they didn't cost us otherwise I'd be saying the same things I've been saying for the last few weeks.

"It would have been a nice boost for the players and sent a message out to everyone that we're not such a bad team. But let's not get too greedy or selfish. We'll take the three goals and move on."

The Blues boss says his team now need to extend their 10-game unbeaten run but must win more of their games: "It's nice but it's victories we need to move up the table.

"We've dropped some silly points but we're looking a lot more solid and we're getting there.

"Steady's goal coming so early was obviously a boost and that's what we've needed over the last few weeks.

"It wasn't really a chance, more an opportunist effort and we had some good chances to have tied the game up well before the end.

"Blackpool probably had more of the possession but Jack's goal summed up our performance, a quick break, good movement but he still had a lot to do when he went through and he took it well.”

Grant Leadbitter and Jon Walters picked up their fifth bookings of of the season and are out of next week's trip to Scunthorpe. Keane says they will be missed but that it gives other people a chance to stake their claim: "They are both important players for us but I'm not too worried about it, that's what you have a squad for and we'll get on with it.

"We have players who have been unlucky to miss out and it will give them an opportunity to come in and show what they can do."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway admitted his side were very much second best: "We got what we deserved and I got what I deserved - nothing.

"I probably tinkered with the team a bit too much and we didn't have our chess pieces in the right places.

"Full credit to Ipswich. They capitalised on that, scoring a fantastic goal after a minute and then giving us an absolute rabbit punch just before half-time.

"But I didn't recognise it as the kind of performance we've been giving, so I'm a bit disappointed.

"You have to give Roy credit, his team credit and the fans credit. Things haven't been going as well as they would want here but the spirit they showed spoke volumes for the manager and the club."

Well as much as I think there's no reason for UEFA81 to be making such daft comments, there is one thing I do agree with him about and that is to watch the old boys of 81 dvd in bed before going off to sleep tonight, but I must say I'm more looking forward to seeing the highlights of today on player tomorrow!!

Personally I can't see how anyone can have ANY complaints about today, the unbeaten run continues, and next week we'll hopefully get our 2nd away win of the season.

Good words from Holloway, and from Rosenior-senior on the telly just now, recognition for the quality and honesty we have here, through the whole set up.
That should be persuading Rosenior junior to stay.

What a great game to watch that was, a cohesive, driven team performance. Special mention here in dispatches for captain Walters - he sets the standard, works his socks off and looks increasingly assured in the role. I couldn't ask for more.

Last season i sat there watching one of the most tedious meaningless games of football i have ever had the misfortune to witness. I even questioned why the hell i kept going to PR because there were so many games like that. Yesterday i saw the best attacking, passionate exciting game since we hammered Bristol 3 seasons ago against a side that has obviously improved in footballing terms under Mad Dog.It is now possible to say that the revolution is starting to work, not there yet and we need to sustain this but there are more than a few green shoots of recovery.More of the same please Roy

UEFA - It's Christmas in two weeks, bit early to be a humbug isn't it?

Good display, good win and for the first time in a while a great atmosphere in the North - Keep up the good work boys!

I dont even know this fella but if he hates Keane then so be it!! Im sure his negativity isnt really going to make any differnce to the team, actually come to think of it, none of our opionions really count!! Do you really think that the team care what we think, especially now under Mr Keane.......I dont think so!!!!!!!!

The tides are turning, seems we've become a side that's hard to beat! Solid defence, energetic and creative midfield just need to get a consistant pair up front and we'll be climbing up the table. Mr keane seems to have settled the team , thinking about it I'm not suprised it's taken so long, what was it 12 players left in the summer? Massive improvement roll on scunny! Oh yea mug off uefa 81

Predicted 2-1 yesterday to the Town, but was mightily pleased when the third goal went in, despite its negative effect on my placing in the Swedish Supporters Prediction League. When a team gets a goal back at 2-0 down with plenty of time still to go they are really up for the second, and it's a potentially jittery time for the leading team, but we handled it well. At least it sounded like that on the radio (where I was pleased to hear D.J. by the way). The next few games are crucial (how many times have we said that). Mustn't let it slip, and must bounce back after the defeat which is bound to come sooner or later. But it's a great feeling to be out of the bottom 3. Oh, and good on D. Bowditch to get the first against Naaarwich. Pity the Yellow Peril got back to a draw at the end. That's it!COYB.

Can't they kick UEFA81 off he's just a scum fan trying to wind us up. Keano has taken us apart and put us back together and he's repairing the damage that three years of terrible management has done - we can see tragic in his true colours now - the truth is he can't handle people and he couldn't get the players to play

Agreed, but beating a top 6 team and scoring three goals, whilst dominating virtually the whole game is very good regardless. 10 unbeaten now and I am confident we will push on from here.

The neagativity by a couple of posters is still quite frankly unbelievable. Obviously not at the game again. Could I suggest to others not to raise to the bait and ignore them. They will soon get bored.

UEFA81 reminds me of Lord Haw Haw who broadcast for the enemy during the war.
Very entertaining stuff and every silver lining has a black cloud. Whatever has happened to the equally entertaining "The Pessimist"?

I'd like to thank the players and manager for the tremendous effort they are putting in, great to win, great to watch. The change in Owen Garven is nothing short of a miricle!! hopefully onwards and upwards i hope. Nice to see Roy consentrating on Ipswich in his press conferances.

I'd like to get fellow fans thoughts on Johnny Walters. He's totally frustrating in front of goal. Jim (ah bless!) recognised that and turned him into our right midfield dynamo. Mr Keane on the other hand buys Edwards, a player I like but who can only play on the right (as P'boro showed). So we end up with two good right midfielders who are too similar, and no supporting striker to hold the ball, layer off to advancing (?) midfielders, oh and to score. Johnny missed 3 sitters yesterday. Brilliant on the right, not sharp enough in front of goal. Stern or Lisbie are certainly not the answer. Anyone equally frustrated with the Johnny/Carlos situation?

wont have a bad word said about Jon, he ran himself into the ground yesterday. Hav u forgotten his superb goal at cardiff already? Love him to bits

P.S. i think Jaime had his best game for town yesterday as well, seems to have come on leaps and bounds, every player gave an 11/10 performance

Dr J, it's not bad words, but more a case of wanting us to make the most of his undoubted talent. Yes he ran himself into the ground but with a sharper striker as Mr K says, we'd have got 6 and been reliving the heady days of 6 goal wins against the likes of Barnsley and Leicester. Put Walters on the right and bring in a young, quick striker alongside Steady. Then we'll be riding souled up Massey Fergusons!

Bressinghamblue I do agree with you. I think walters bleeds blue but we do need some goals.

I would never not have Walters in the starting lineup but I do think his talent is wasted upfront at times. He is not a natural striker. Having said that wherever he plays on the park he has a presence about him and the side feeds off him.

Always proud to be a town fan, come rain or shine. And you know what, no one can deny that its interesting being a town fan at the moment!
