Keane Watches Celtic-Rangers
Keane Watches Celtic-Rangers
Sunday, 3rd Jan 2010 19:11

Town boss Roy Keane was back at his former club Celtic this afternoon to watch the Old Firm derby, which ended 1-1. Birmingham, Wigan and Middlesbrough also sent scouts to watch the game.

Reports in Scotland are linking the Blues with renewed interest in Celtic central defender Stephen McManus, who turned down a loan switch to Town in the summer.

However, central defence is no longer an area where the Blues are short of players with Gareth McAuley and Damien Delaney established as the first-choice pair with Alex Bruce, Tommy Smith and Pim Balkestein providing back-up. McManus was an unused sub during this afternoon's game.

The Blues have also previously been linked with Rangers midfielder or striker Lee McCulloch, who scored his side's goal today, while Celtic winger Niall McGinn, also an unused sub, was interesting Town prior to his move to Tony Mowbray's club from Derry City.

Town's January priorities appear to be a striker and a left-back, while a left midfielder may also be on Roy Keane's wish-list with Luciano Civelli still out of action with his long-term knee injury and Lee Martin having failed to settle since his move from Manchester United.

The Blues make their first signing of the transfer window tomorrow when goalkeeper Brian Murphy formalises his free Bosman switch from League of Ireland champions Bohemians.

I wish McGinn joined us instead of Celtic - he's a tasty slice of young winger if I ever saw one.

Healy or Phillips, would be a decent addition to the squad.

I still think we need a centre-back. McAuley is good in the centre, but personally I think we could do better with Danny Shittu Partnering him. Shittu still hasn't played this season, and may be more open to a move than in august. I am also still not satisfied with Delaney, I still believe he is a liability to the rest of the defence.

Looking forward to finally seeing Brian Murphy.

I don't think Keane was necessarily scouting players. He always takes in Old Firm games whenever he can, always has.

Yeah, Keanes been in the crowd with the Celtic fans in the past aswell. Hes a Celtic fan himself.

If he was looking at anybody, I think Boyd would be a good shout. Rangers are in such financial trouble that they will accept bids on any of their players, so a deal for Boyd could be made.

Boyd would be out of our price / wages range. Wages certainly, because I can see Rangers - who need to get rid of wages / players - accepting between £1m and £2m for him. But what would he want a week?

McManus would be a good buy - despite Delaney & McAuley doing a very decent job. However, Delaney's distribution consists of one aspect - the tw*t down the field.... not subtle but sometimes required.

But - as folks have said - we need a front man, a nailed on first choice striker, with whom our plentiful supply of second strikers can play...

Hmm Gaz, I have to say i dont agree with ou, yes Rangers have a big fan base and stadium but you are in debt up to your eyes, having to ofload players is a must and from a player perspective would you rather play falkirk away or newcastle?? I also appreciate you have the opportunity to play CL but really? these days celtic and rangers are the whipping boys even if they make it so its hardly glory times up there. Alex Mcleish was the manager of your title winning prestigous club and then he left to go to birmingham....

Gaz you can offer him a few embarrassing games in Europe as your history shows one european title of a now defunct competion in the early seventies !!! Your league is as embarrassning like the old Welsh league which is why you are trying to get into the English league system like Swansea ,Cardiff and Wrexham did.
And besides our small club could offer him more money and wages than your huge and hugely in debt club

More strikers and left midfielders!? No one seems to mention Town have wasted the best part of 5 million in fees and wages on Priskin and Martin. Scandalous.

Hi Guys,

You speak of rangers only being a bottom half premier team at best what you are failing to recognise is we would have access to the same kind of funding as the rest of the clubs and bearing in mind rangers are a much bigger club than most in england it wouldn't take long for them to establish themselves as one of the top clubs down there! Do you honestly think we would be playing with the same class of player we have at the moment, and i realise the scottish league is poor but that is solely down to lack of tv money.

biffo - As an English town fan living in Scotland, it's idiots like you who give the rest of us a bad name.

Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee Utd would all make decent lower half/mid table championship sides and Rangers and Celtic would challenge for promotion to the prem, and as GAZ16 said given the same cash etc i believe could be decent mid table/challenging for europa league sides.

Let's not also forget two 'jocks' who did not to bad for us, Mr Wark and Mr Burley. Oh, and who is probably the greatest manager the English game has seen....what's his name....he learned his trade in Scotland...oh yeah Sir Alex Ferguson.

Look, your opinion is your opinion and i agree the SPL is'nt the greatest but please don't be so ignorant.

Orkney firstly we havent gone on a Rangers site slating them Gaz has come onto our site saying what a small club we are .
Secondly Wark ,Burley ,Brazil excellent but all left Scotland to ply their trade ,Sir Alex the same .
Thirdly saying given money Rangers/Celtic could compete well surely so could anyone , Wigan have no fanbase but get Premier money and have competed ?

As a Rangers fan living in East Anglia for the past 20 years or so and having adopted Town as my local team - been a season ticket holder for about 15 - maybe I can add some perspective to this arguement. The best Scots players have always plied thier trade in England and have done so for the past 100 years. And as for managers the Scots do ok in England; Ferguson, Moyes, McLeish, Coyle, Davis - not to mention Lambert!!The English game has and always will be bigger than the game in Scotland after all Scotland only has a population of around 5 million and up until the last 10 years or so the country has punched above it's weight - but there is a current lack of talented players around in Scotland and that's a fact. The current state of the SPL is poor - I get to Ibrox at least 3 or 4 times a year and watch the old firm games on TV - however, it is no poorer than the Championship believe me I have seen some dire teams at PR over the past 15 years - lots of kick and rush and hoof and sometimes that comes from the Town. I do sometimes have to stifle a laugh when I hear of people talk about the 'Ipswich style' as I have seen a lot of long ball stuff from Town. We are all entitled to our opinion but before people can say the SPL is a 'toytown' league they need to critically look at the Championship. On the signing front I think Boyd would be a good shout as he would score goals in our league and maybe if we were pushing for a play-off place he might be tempted...Up the town and the Gers...

surco - Good points. I was just trying to put a similar point over as jimbaxter that there has been an endless list of scots that have been an asset to our leagues and teams over the years and to suggest, as biffo did, that itfc reserves could win the SPL came over as a stupid comment. In hindsight i realise that there was an element of sarcasm(i hope!) in that post and he probably caught me hook, line and sinker! Haha!

Wigan are, as you said, are a good example of being able to compete in the prem. Again all i was trying to say there was that many teams have been promoted and been relegated after a season or two, maybe because they could'nt attract the right players etc. I believe that in same league and offered the same wages, a player who had the choice of Celtic/Rangers or Hull/Wigan/Wolves etc they may choose Celtic/Rangers because of the history, fans etc.
