Pablo: I Knew What I Had to Do
Pablo: I Knew What I Had to Do
Monday, 18th Jan 2010 09:13

Striker Pablo Couñago says he knew precisely what he had to do when he got his late, late chance to win Saturday’s home game against Coventry. Couñago netted his second goal of the season, chipping the ball over Keiren Westwood and into the net to seal a dramatic 3-2 win for the Blues.

The Spaniard told the club site: "As soon as I controlled the ball, in my head I knew what I wanted to do. The keeper was very close to me and there was a lot of space to go for it so I tried it and I was very happy to see it go in.

"It was a special moment for me, of course, but it's more important for the team. It is always the team that counts.

"We know we need to win games and it may have been with the last kick but I think we deserved the three points."

Couñago admitted that Coventry’s equaliser had been a hammer blow: "We were very down when they scored their second goal but football can be unpredictable and sometimes fantastic things can happen.

"It looked like two points dropped but we had one minute left and luckily that was enough to get the winner.

Fellow frontman Stern John was pleased to get his first Town goal having failed to find the net since scoring for Bristol City at Portman Road in December 2008: “A striker is judged by the goals he scores.

“That's 32 games since my last goal, so it's a relief to score. I was not living up to my standards, because I've always been accustomed to scoring goals. But I wasn't that worried, because I'd been playing well the last couple of games.”

John’s second month on loan is up on January 30th.

Maybe if he knows what he has to do the rest of the time on the pitch he might play more often. Great goal, great finish. However, he was poor up until the goal.

I still think our man of the match is the coventry keeper, - what a game
pabs has more grit when he hasn't played for a while hope this is a start of a good run and more goals to come

chislehurstblue: yeah, the way he skipped past most of their team in the area and had it cleared off the line was rubbish.

OK, finish was poor, but it was completely self-made. No-one else on the pitch could have even got themselves a shooting chance.

And he's only scored two, but he's hardly been given a run.

Well played OK today but when I saw our front two was John and Walters I was worried. That isn't a front-line that's going to scare many teams.

Good to see the midfield actually attacking for once though. Made all the difference and shows what we've been missing most of the season.

On the itfc website pablo has said what a good ball it was from Wickham for his goal. But when I was there on sat I fought it was walters who played him in and seening it on TV it still looks like it was walters set him up.

Phil has taken it out from this article so it wasnt just me then?!?

Golaboots ... does say it all 2 goals in 6 starts ,perhaps played and given a run alongside Stead and we will have a decent forward line who can create and score ,not been tried together all season .
Or we could stick with Walters out of position and John 1 goal in 32 games ,it really does say it all .

And Naa totally agree we have been lacking goals from all areas especially midfield

Pablo was lazy? Holy moses I must get my SAT nav fixed as clearly I was at a different football match. I recommed those Pablo basher to ask the club for the last 20 minutes of video.

This is the first real game in whihc BOTH Pablo and Stern John ran about.

Both these players are meant to RECEIVE the ball then lay it off, hold it up(until an opportunity arises) or push on. That is precisely what they both did on Saturday. A little more pushing on would help, I'll say that.

The clue to them BOTH being sucessful is RECEIVING the ball. If there is no service then they are wasted.

In this match both of them ran a lot more. There is room for improvemnt for them running into space etc but this was a better performance.

Well done to both of them.

how do you go 32 goals without scoring a goal?

MVBlue added 11:48 - Jan 18
@brogansnose it certainly was. My first game watching the Blues at Portman road for some time, think I caught a good one. The whole ground and cheering were on their feet cheering his brilliant chip, which I think is rare to see. After Cov had scored and celebrated in front of their suddenly noisy fans, the chances of us getting another chance didn't seem possible. Great stuff :)

I would agree about the front line of Walters and John, its not going to scare any teams is it. However, once Wickham and Pablo came on I thought we lost our way a bit. You then realise how much work Walters puts in.

I know a lot of you love Pablo and believe that he is the best player ever to pull on a ITFC shirt, but he doesn't work harder enough for me (and clearly Keane, which he said in his post match interview). However, if he keeps finishing like that then he might get a run in the side.

Because of his lack of work rate if he is not scoring then he is never going to be in the side. I though John did Ok on Saturday. Some intelligent passes; held the ball up well and took his goal well.

nthstd - thank you for pointing this out to the knockers - a player like Pablo will only be as good as his service and while he can be anonymous in games, he can be the spark to get us playing.

The alternative is to hoof long balls to a front 2 and then see them returned back again just as quickly (as per last weeks game at Leicester). If Pablo is given service, he can link the paly and get midfield players passing and moving into advanced positions.

Need to start him every game, then if he is not doing the business, sub him. But the alternative is to continuously go route 1.

All credit to Keano for Pablo's ressurection on Satuday.By putting him in the background for a while appears to have got his appetite back. Long may it continue.More of that effort and finishing will get him that regular place he and his fans think he deserves.
Loved the atmosphere at the end ,you can see what it will be like next season when we are up the top challenging for promotion.
We dont need a 20 goal a season striker just need all our strikers to get 15 each.....problem solved.COY MIGHTY B

Pablo is just about our only class player. And to think Keane was happy to sell him to Swansea! His extra ability was clear with the goal and he should get more playing time.

"Pablo is just about our only class player". Really?

On his day is is good at this level, but that's a little too far. If he was that good why is he only making our bench?

How can anyone whinge or knock Pablo? His goal & the type of classic moment he provides is what you buy your ticket for. The 'Reuser' moments. Makes the rest of a crap season worthwhile.

for once i thought pablo wasnt lazy, he chased lost causes and played quite well...and the goal, well classic pablo keeping his cool under pressure (lets forget about his miss earlier)

Surco72 added 13:26 - Jan 18
Exactly Christchurchblue why is he only making the bench? probably the same reason Garvan and Stead couldnt make the squad or team for so long,or the reason Mac and Wright were not playing in the defence .Its called bad selection ,but we certainly look better now they are all back and playing and the results are coming

devontractorboy added 14:33 - Jan 18
Strikers performance is all about the service they receive, Pablo does tend to drift out of games if he gets no service, he's Spanish and their national game is different to ours. I think however he is a quality player (Not in the Roy Keane mould) who adds far more than just goals to our play, I for one would like to see him in the side more often, maybe playing in a hole behind the front two.
