Keane Happy With Point
Keane Happy With Point
Tuesday, 26th Jan 2010 23:41

Boss Roy Keane was happy with a point after Town’s 1-1 draw with West Brom, despite conceding yet another injury time goal. The Blues manager thought the visitors deserved their equaliser, but was pleased with his side’s battling display.

Keane said: "As much as people might think I'm angry and disappointed to lose the goal at the end, I'm not.

"I don't begrudge West Brom their equaliser. They caused us lots of problems but my players were outstanding and it was a good response to the Southampton defeat. They showed a real desire and a great spirit and I thought it was a cracking game.

"We had chances to have finished them off but that will come. It's the sign of the progress we are making that we can hold a team as good as West Brom, but it's a sign of how far we have to go as well.

"When I was driving to the game I knew that we would have to defend well if we were going to have a chance and they did that.

"A blind man could see that West Brom have a very good chance of winning promotion.

"They play very good football and move the ball well and we knew that, but in terms of clear-cut chances we had the better ones.

"We are nearly a good team but we all know nearly never made it. Are we short in certain areas? You bet we are. But we are improving all the time and they gave it their all tonight."

Keane says his players told him that referee Stuart Attwell had warned Jonas Olsson about manhandling players in the penalty area prior to awarding the Blues their second half spotkick: "The lads were saying that he had been warned before. Olsson likes to make a challenge in the box and he only has himself to blame."

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo saw things differently: "We are very angry about it because that decision has cost is dearly. Unfortunately the referee's decision has gone against us.

"I don't think anyone else in the stadium thought it was a penalty. It looks like the ref was the only one who saw any contact for a penalty.

“I had a word with the fourth official and he was just shaking his head. There was a bit of contact but nothing else.

"That was a key moment in the game because out of nothing he thought he saw something. It doesn't make sense to speak to the referee. The game is over now and there nothing else we can do about it.

"We kept going until the end and that shows we've got good energy there to last the 90 minutes for our third game in eight days.

"It took a lot out of us - and credit to the players for keeping knocking on the door. At least we got an equaliser.

"The only negative point is that we had the chances but didn't manage to score the goals. We created a number of good chances and one was saved off the line as well.

"We needed to take one to put us ahead. We knew as the game went on we would have more chances too. But if you have to play against the referee as well that's very difficult."

Well said keano! Hit the nail on the head

Unlucky lads but on the balance of play and on refelction a point was a fair result and we all would have taken it before the game

The amount of times this season late goals have killed us but walking out of the ground after the game this seems to be the one that hurts the least maybe its because it was against a team who played well on the night and deserved a share of the points or is the fact that this has happened so bloody many times this season that i am starting to expect it!!

Anyway onwards and Upwards

UP THE TOWN!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to disagree but we were awful.
Passes going astray, lack of cohesion from the midfield. Players like Rosenior hoofing the ball anywhere thereby giving the ball back to W Brom when we were under no pressure, goalkeeping naivety. The list go's on & on.
Roy, if you were happy it's because you understand we are really an average team struggling away to remain in the chumpionship.
If we keep pretending "we are nearly a good team" I'm afraid we should not be surprised if we stay in this league for a long time with no prospect of promotion.
Town are all "huff & puff" with no quality or class. We've adopted "hit & hope" tactics and we've lost our "footballing side" tag.
If Roy thinks that's ok then heaven help us.
BTW, there were never 19500k fans there tonight. More like 17000. The fan base is dwindling, the football is poor, the manager looks like he's having no effect and we can't attract any decent players to the club.
I'm on the verge of giving up. (I started the season positive as a Roy fan).

You happy to see our club remain average? You fool?

"A blind man could see that West Brom have a very good chance of winning promotion."

Anyone else think this comment could be deemed as slightly inappropriate, coming as it does from a man so 'Keane-ly' (sorry) committed to Guide Dog charities?!

stiffshorts -no, we weren't awful.

WBA (who are 3rd - 15 places above us) were very good and Carson pulled off some excellent saves - he's probably the best keeper in the Championship.
But it was a game that we could have won - without the penalty.
(and yes, I go to all home games)

Not happy at all. Gutted to concede another late goal. Surely the players should learn their lesson by now.
At the begining of the game I wouldn't have settled for the draw so am I am not settling for one now. Proper rubbish,. We didn't play that bad and to be in a winning a positon shows we are heading in the right direction.
Also ITFCenFrance, chill out, I don't think keane was having a pop at blind people directly and i thought it was a good bit of humour.

I'm sure most fans would have settled for a point before the game started. WBA are a good side - certainly they out-played us for much of the game last night.

Very disappointed that we couldn't hold onto the ball at the end of the game though. Twice in extra time we had it in their corner and they took it off us.

If only Jon Walters had played, then maybe he would have made the difference - he can hang on to a ball.

But life is full of "If onlys".....

It was quite humbling to see us so totally outplayed. It shows us how much better we have to be to challenge for promotion, & WBA are a yoyo side, so the gap between us & the Premier is huge. Bizarrly though, we had the better chances to win the game - McAuley headed wide when he should have scored, Norris had a decent effort saved, Peters & Priskin were both one on one with the keeper. The defense played well, but midfield were outplayed & outnumbered & too many passes went astray. Pablo had a good game, Stead worked hard, & thought Priskin did OK despite failing to take his chance.

Agree with the general consensus that a draw was a fair result against a very good WBA side, despite conceding a late equaliser (yet again!). But given that we were a bit lucky to get the penalty, had to absorb some serious pressure and we had to clear 2 shots off the line, it all balanced out in the end.

Although I felt we weren't as good as we have been in recent league games, I feel Stiffshorts is a bit unfair to the lads. For me it was simply a case of being largely outplayed by a far better side (and probably better than Newcastle were in Sept IMHO, but it's a measure of how far we have come that we didn't get thrashed this time), yet we earned a point through lots of heroics, a fair amount of effort and hard work, and just a bit of luck despite an awful ref!

Jaime Peters was my MoM (boundless effort and workrate), but Pabs was disappointingly lazy for most of his game. Priskin looked sharp when he came on but not really long enough on the pitch. Steady was OK, but after 4 games out maybe a little off the pace.

Encouraging, and nicely set up for PNE hopefully!

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stiffshorts - i make a 300 mile round trip on many occasions. Enough to know that you are the fool. Our club IS average, and apart from a period of exceptional achievement always has been. 'Fanbase dwindling', 'Manager having no effect', 'Cannot attract decent players'. Utter tosh.

Hampshire can you explain this - 'period of exceptional achievement always has been'
0

HampshireBlue added 08:43 - Jan 27
Mariner - It is very obvious what that means. Look at the history books for the late 70's and early 80's.

stiffshorts.
I expect you've had one or two too many stiff shorts to compile a meaningful post.
You extract a part of a quote and use it for you junior school rag mag story telling.
Tell us where it say's we are "pretending " to be "nearly a good side"?
We are nearly a good side is the accurate extract you need to use if you want to be factually correct. Perhaps you'd like to look at the correct quote where Keane fully realises what has to be done.
"We are nearly a good team but we all know nearly never made it. Are we short in certain areas? You bet we are. But we are improving all the time and they gave it their all tonight."
In my opinion, your post is "huff and puff" and "hit and hope". You completely miss the point of football mangement as do many Hacks these days who think they have journalistic tendancies.
8 to 10 weeks ago, Town would probably have lost that game. Carson pulled off excellent saves and has to be one (if not the) top keeper in the championship. Town have played better and lost. That is football. If you can't see progress being made, then I suggest that you could do worse than approach Roy Keane and ask for a donation for a guide dog for the blind, because you clearly don't see.
At least Keane supports that charity by being possitive. I don't see that with your post you can be deemed to be a supporter of Town. Just someone who enjoys putting a negative spin on possitive stories.

Mariner - Quite long for a club of our size yep, but not in the overall scheme of things really. People like Stiffshorts with their negativity, and unrealistic expectations need to be a little more realistic. We all WANT success, but we can't kid ourselves.

Stiffshorts.....your a mug!

Town are progressing.....our centre halfs were outstanding last night....last ditch tackles, getting vital body in the way etc....it was great to see. Felt so gutted for the players with the late goal, but i can see our progression. Yes, at times passing wasn't great (first time i've seen Leadbitter give the ball away twice in a match!). I thought Stead worked hard and Pabs wasn't great but he is different to our other strikers. Priskin worked hard when he came on and was unlucky with his effort. Fans need to get behind him, i think he will finally come good with more minutes.

They outplayed us in every area and were soooo much better as a whole team and we did really well to come away with anything, good battling display, yes unfortunate to conceed in injury time but they deserved to win really, was amazed when we made it to half time at 0-0. Well done the boys

we rode are luck in the first half and were lucky not to concede, nice to see some quality from priskin though a few very good touches, happy to come away with a point against a better club, the only way is up baby

We're leading the game and in the last ten minutes, Priskin has a golden chance to secure the points but fluffs it, opposition score a late leveller. Anyone else feeling a touch of deja vu? Anyone?

It seems to me (as someone who hasn't been for two years - I'm a dwindling fan base) that we have half a good team and that we can claim the good part is; Delaney, McAuley, Leadbitter, Norris, Walters. The just above midtable part is Peters, Rosenior, Garvan (not that he plays enough) Wright, Colback. The bottom third of the table bit is: Barrett, Strikers.
Managers always speak of a spine as how to how you build a decent side. We are missing too many components for a good spine and made the mistake of tinkering around the edges with the signings made in the last 12 months.
I'm sure it will come though, Keane's no doubt smartened up after his over excitement at having a few quid in his pocket pre season. He seems to have board support which is possibly the most promising part of what is happening at PR.

There have been many times this season where we have been desperately unlucky to have conceced in the last minutes . This was not one of them. Just thought tonight it would have been great to have been lucky for a change .
Obviously WBA have a better team - look at the tables ,and yes, they deserved their point , just gutted that we never get an undeserved 3 points .
Stiff, Can you not see progress anywhere ????
