Keane Slams Second Half Performance
Keane Slams Second Half Performance
Wednesday, 17th Feb 2010 01:02

Boss Roy Keane slammed his team’s second half performance as the Blues surrendered a 1-0 half-time lead to lose 3-1 at rock bottom Peterborough.

Keane said: "We live in the real world. We defend each other but when you have three thousand fans here to see you, you must be better.

"It is not good players that get you out of trouble, it is characters and in the last 25 minutes I never felt we were going to get back into it.

"I have defended the players this season as they have always given their all, but we died out in the second half and I need to put my finger on why tonight and we must do more.

"You can have 90% of the possession but if you don't score and don't defend set-pieces you will lose games.

"There is no hiding place. In any walk of life you have got to show some character and we had none."

The Blues boss felt a second first half goal would have settled the match in Town’s favour: "We got a foothold in the game but we didn't get that second goal that I think would have been enough to have won us the points.

"Their goal in the first minute of the second half changed the game. It was a crazy goal to give away. We had the kick-off, we didn't clear the ball, dived in for the challenge. I'm not sure it was a foul but you still have to defend the set-piece and we didn't do that.

"Their second goal was a good goal but the third was another set-piece and we have to be better than that.

"Credit to Peterborough, they took the game to us but our second half performance wasn't good enough. It was disappointing, frustrating - and a lot worse but you won't be able to print it!

"The last 20 minutes we lost that bit of spark and it looked as if we had played over the weekend and they had a few days off, not the other way round.

"I think we will be in the bottom three tomorrow night as other teams around us will pick up results.

"We had a fantastic following again but we let the fans down tonight and that's not acceptable. We have to make sure we bounce back on Saturday at Sheffield Wednesday."

Peterborough boss Jim Gannon made an important tactical change just after the half hour, taking off Craig Mackail-Smith, bringing on Reuben Reid and switching to a five-man midfield.

Gannon says he should have gone with that plan from the start: "I made a difficult decision to try and accommodate a certain player and I compromised my beliefs to get him in. I will never do that again.

"I was disappointed in myself as we looked poor in the first half an hour but I made the change and it was justified.

"Straight away Reuben gave us width and penetration and you could see signs from then that we would be more purposeful.

"We didn't show enough quality maybe but in the second half we had more tempo and certainly did enough.

"I just reminded them at the break about what we have been working on and we played my way after the break.

"I have learned a lot in my short time here and if we play like that for the majority of the remaining games then we will give ourselves a chance."

I'm a s/t holder and have been for 10+ years. I can't go to away games, but go to every home game that I can.

I believe that everyone has a right to express their opinion on here and I have never labelled the anti-Keane posters as whingers.

Whatever happens over the remainder of the season, the team need our support - even if sometimes they don't seem to deserve it.

I will give them mine.

As I've said before: In the middle part of this season, Town seem to have been doing better against the stronger teams (at least drawing) and struggling against the weaker ones.

Don't know what the problem is. Complacency perhaps?

Somersham - Fair play... you chose a bad time to buy a season ticket... I hope you were lucky enough to take in the 2000/01 season!... not much return for your c.£4,000 since then!!

bennyblue - Right here as always. Posting week-in week-out regardless of the result.

Last night the result was shambolic - but I've yet to see anyone lay in to the players ON THE PITCH who didn't respond when P'boro turned it up a notch. Granted Keane's got a lot to answer for with regard to tactics and selection, but the players themselves also need to take a good look at themselves and the effore (or lack thereof) that was put in during the 2nd half.

paristractor - Miss Jim? A man who spent £12 mill on naff signings and probably started the slide before it was accelerated by Keano's dodgy signings at the start of this season? Wind your neck in mate.

I don't want to see Keane go but if ME deems it necessary then who am I to disagree? I just see no credible alternative available who will do any better...

(and NO, Burley is NOT a credible alternative, it's 2010 not 2000!)

Totally on board with Matt_th_blue. When are we going to turn our attention to the 11 MEN on the pitch, Roy can only do so much, but they are proffessional footballers for heavens sake. Surely they have enough balls between them to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and attack/defend/create

Things are bad but it is true from previous comments, this season has been so up and down, when we win we love keane, when we lose we hate keane.

Whoever is saying bring burley back, can I smoke some of the stuff you are please. It worked out so well for Newcastle bringing back Keegan didn't it. Times change.

Part of me says we have to stick by keane but a big part of me says we need a change. I am so confused, I think I have picked a good time to leave the country :-(

most Keane haters h8 him for no real justification from the word go for the glory of predicting the demise of a controversial appointment to try and look clever on a message board which is why they get slapped for their nonsense you can tell who they are by the way they brag about it.
iv backed him all season win or lose like a real fan.
and still think if he manages to keep us up and keep the job we can have a great season under him next year.
but for what ever reason it's starting to look like he cant turn it around the team is in a slump its a psychological thing that appeared to have got better on an unbeaten run where we were playing well not leaking loads of goals and creating lots of chances but not putting them away,

After a couple of 2nd half's that look like escaped mental patients cracking under the pressure it appears they still fear themselves and don't have a winning mentality or the appropriate level of concentration and confidence.
something that is easily lost in a team with a huge spotlight suddenly turned on them and so many new players coming in at once...something that could have been regained in the summer with the whole squad Keane is building starting together at the same time and some certain players no longer star struck or scared of Keane (LOL)
with this season put behind them and a good pre-season which is what the
"For Keane" fans see and rightly so if he can keep us up he deserves until Xmas to have us in or around the play-off's.

BUT like i said earlier its getting to close now and to risky like i said in 2 games time if those games are lost it will be devastating to the league position and to the players it will be to serious and we will need the fresh start now to turn the players around and save us.
A new manager does that, players that haven't been playing suddenly realise they have a better chance of being picked etc. some players think dam i need to turn it on to keep in the side under this new bloke.....

A new manager brings new fresh ideas that make it feel like a new start and some confidence and passion returns that could save us where as Keane would be in to deep to recover that mental attitude without miracles.

matt_the_blue, spot on, agree with everything you said. Why does the manager take all the stick all the time? Why not the players who dont show any passion or commitment and have been pretty crap all year. At the end of the day the manager doesn't play, he picks the team, and if they dont perform what can he do?

Matt the Blue ...Magiltons dodgy signings Mac,Norris,Stead,Wright x2 can you list 5 signings Keane has made to match them Leadbitter then who ?

And as for players effort perhaps they are a bit dispondent that the teams top scorer has been sold ,a lot of players are playing out of position Peters ,Colback,Garvan .Garvan gets taken off every game however he is playing to go back to a system that has not worked and that we play hoof ball from the back

And anyone who comes in if they do only have to get 2 wins out of the last 16 games to equal Keanes win record this season ,so any alternative should be able to manage that

why is it that every picture we see of keane he has his head down in shame ?
inspirational sort of bloke is'nt he not

Surco - First things first I didn't say all of Jim's signings were dodgy, and I certainly didn't say Keane had done quite better - quite the opposite if you re-read. I'll agree Leadbitter is the only decent perm signing, and I'd rate Colback, Rosenior and Murphy as good loan signings. Don't get me started on Priskin and Martin. Secondly we haven't sold Stead he's on loan to Coventry, plus he's only scored 6 goals in 22 league appearances (which also says a lot about our season) and missed a lot of chances to increase that total whereas Murphy is 3 for 3 at the moment - if it's a matter of reducing the wage bill who would you rather keep at PR? As much as I love Pablo I will admit maybe his time has passed, but we tried and failed to ship him to Swansea so it had to be Stead. Thirdly, yes any alternative should be able to MATCH what he's done but I said who could do BETTER than that.

bennyblue - Congratulations, what a marvellous response. So you're saying football players aren't at all responsible for working as a team when they're out on the pitch?

I think Jim must be sitting with a smile a mile wide at moment,he was branded as ''Dim'' but right now Evans and Keane are making him look a f 'kin genious .He will never have to worry about being the worst manager we had thats a dead cert .

Actually, I don't see a problem in getting rid now, the reaction from players to any new manager is usually positive.

I'll probably be told to wash my mouth out but look what Lambert has done with the scum in such a short space of time.

Surco72 added 13:07 - Feb 17
Matt the blue you stated 12 million on naff signings if you do not consider Mac,Norris,Wright x2 and Stead as naff signings dont put cause thats over 6 million gone there so who are the 6 million naff signings ?

And as for Stead not being sold he wont be helping to keep us up will he ? Ifour wage bill is that high perhaps he shouldnt have brought in a premier league waged player who was past it 4 years ago ?

My point was anybody could match Keanes job done so why keep him ,if you want better Warnock,Keegan,Curbishly,Lambert,Pardew,Hoddle,Mowbray,Clarke,Boothroyd i would even say Paul Mariner he has almost managed as many wins as Keane has this season since mid Dec with a crap squad and side
