Town Back in Bottom Three
Town Back in Bottom Three
Wednesday, 17th Feb 2010 22:42

Town dropped back into the Championship’s bottom three after Reading’s 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening. The Blues now sit in 22nd place behind Palace who also have 33 points but whose goal difference is nine better.

A draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday would be enough to take the Blues above Palace depending on their result, while a victory could see Town leap ahead of the Owls in 20th, QPR in 19th, Reading in 18th and Scunthorpe in 17th if their games go the Blues' way. Town travel to Scunthorpe next Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Jon Stead made his debut for new loan club Coventry as a 56th minute sub as the Sky Blues lost 4-1 at Newcastle.

I am confident Roy will go sooner rather than later bearing in mind it's nearly season ticket application time (operation premiership).

Surco - Hmmm...maybe he got that idea from our draw record, and quite a few opposing managers saying as such? But then again what would they know, they're only professionals after all...

matt_the_blue, when do you hear managers slating other managers. Not very often, so I would take what they say on their prematch discussions with the local media etc with a pinch of salt. They are hardly going to come out and say RK is s**t are they?
Not sure that many teams look at ITFC as a real tough opponent at present. Peterboro manager pre game was talking about this is the type of match we should be winning! (Perhaps this was on the back of already taken a draw at PR and knocking us out the cup).

Right

RK will not walk, he did that at sunderland, he will not do it again. he will have to be pushed. it would not do him any good to walk, not yet anyway.

Stats can be used to prove any point. The main fact is we are not winning as many games as we want or need. Regardless of the start to the season, regardless of how hard we became to beat. Winning is what counts and we aint doing it enough.

What makes any positive opinioned fan think that with the games we have got left RK will be the one to get us out of this mess. What changes will he make, what will he do to suddenly get us winning games and not drawing them.

If he can, why has he not done it before, what is so different about now.

Some of you write about giving him two more games, these same things were being said by some prior to xmas. Give him a few more games. how many more games does he need.

Others talk of being so many points off this position or that. 6 points off, means you have to win two games, and all other teams above you to that point lose two games. It can happen yes, but the likelyhood is it aint. At best 6 points will take us out of the bottom 3 and maybe a place or two up.

The reality is that XX points are required to avoid relegation each year. With this league being so tight, that might be less then previous years, but until you get to that point, you have to consider relegation.

I only hope QPR continue to drop like a stone.

None of us like being where we are, what fans of any club would. But facts is facts, were are here, we are here now. We do not want to be here. We need Rk to do something to get us out of it. Some of you think he can, others think he cannot.

lets not leave it to late, because the games are running out.

One stat says it all for me this season. Played Peterborough three times: Lost 2 and drawn one. Think that sums up how good we are!

Thankfully, when we played QPR they had an even worse manager in charge (Mick Harford) otherwise we would be in even bigger trouble.

osborne1nil - I wasn't talking about comments other managers have made about RK, I was talking about what they'd said about our team post-match. Anyway the main point I was trying to make is that we've drawn 15 league games this season in comparison to losing 9. Palace are the only team to do the double over us so far which means only 8 teams out of a possible 23 have been able to beat us so far, which in league terms I think makes us very difficult to beat. Yes it was shocking to go out of the cup to the saints but I wouldn't say they are the worst team in League One, if they hadn't started with a -10 penalty they'd be sitting 9th and only 8 points off the League One play-off places.

Surco - if you are going to quote stats at me, forget the cup - why not select the last 6 LEAGUE games? WON 2, DRAWN 2, LOST 2. Or the last 8 - WON 3 DRAWN 3 LOST 2.

Doesn't look quite so bad does it?

Yes I know, 3rd from bottom, Keane out blah blah bloody blah yawn. Fact is, we are still trying to make up ground from an awful start, and unfortunately form has dipped in the last fortnight, just when we were starting to look upwards, and that has dragged us back into the mire. All I'm saying is there are 48 points still to play for, and you and the other Keane-haters have us written off already. You and the others can wallow in your misery if you like, but me, I'm gonna keep on believing until the fat lady gets her corset on and starts wailing. And she ain't even at the theatre yet, trust me.

COYB!!

Fair does matt_the_blue, I agree that Towns defence has improved over the course of a season and if RK had got/used a dedicated LB it could be even tighter although I noticed that Thatcher was used the other night for the reserves for 70+ mins, perhaps he is fit again and maybe in the reckoning?
The problem has been more the lack of goals from midfield and upfront. Town have not had the greatest of defences for several years but managed to knock in enough goals to counteract this. We are struggling to score many this season and that puts added pressure on the defence and GK.
These problems have been noted on here from quiet early on in the season and hopefully Murphy will help this situation. Midfield need to more.

ive been saying all season, 'judge him on the season'. Now we can. Worst season in living memory, most money spent. Oh dear. Retire with your millions roy. Management is not for you.

After 32 matches & 8million quid Roy still doesn't really know his best 11. We're an unsettled side, players don't know where they are or where they stand & that produces poor results. A grown up will get in there, pick our best 11, stick with them & make small changes to improve the team. Keano runs it like an American footie team & that does not work at this level. He over manages, can't seem to man manage. The squad we have now is probably the best we've had for ages. The problem is the manager. It's crystal clear.

osborne1nil - Glad to see I've found someone I can have a reasoned debate with :) you're spot on with the goals being the problem. The amount of those of draws we've thrown away the lead because we didn't finish them off with a second or third goal is ridiculous and that lack of a killer instinct is one of the reasons we are where we are. If we took say 8 of those 15 draws (as a hypothetical number) as games we should've won then that's 16 points we've missed out on. Carrying on with being hypothetical if we added that on to our current total that would put us on 49 and in the hunt for a play-off spot.

Depressing maths right there...

Funnilly enough Matt, the form you want is exactly what Jim Magilton was doing last year. He lost more games, drew less games but won more. Wern't we 'in the hunt for a play off place' most of last 2 seasons & that wasn't good enough?

Look at the stats page in the programme & see how many players have been used, their run in the team & the subs - it's like a patchwork quilt!

Plus I dont think Roy will be able to attract new players here in the summer. He has formed an outside image of himself as a poor tactician, poor coach and an unstable temperament. Its all over bar the next defeat.

Matt the blue if you are quoting other managers comments after games try the one they all have said "with their squad Ipswich wont be down the bottom for too long " still here though arent we ,are they saying Keane isnt managing good players well enough ?

Dobie as for stats the only one that counts unfortunately is played 30 six wins only 33 points bottom 3 ,we can choose any section of the season to support or attack Keane it doesnt matter and means nothing.
As for wallowing in self misery ,as far as i can see us voicing our opinion to change the situation to help the club is better than just accepting and hoping things get better when apart from a spell of a few wins ,2 against Qpr who are in self destruct and many draws we have been woeful for most of the season not just the start

And matt ifs dont keep you up, if Peterboro hadnt scored 3 we would have won !!

Basically Managers have been sacked for a lot less than RK, and yes dobbie I totally agree with you, 48 points is a massive total to get and is a massive carrot, my point is I just dont feel that with the current managment we will get near it judging on recent/season form. This is not an anti - keane bashing from me but just a realisation that things are not working and haven't been for a very long time. And all this about well what if all our draws were wins, we would be well placed, well what about if they were losses we would be relegated by now. Beleive me I want all of us to be united and I understand both sides of the argument, but for me personally enough is enough.

Surco - I suggest you read what I say before you criticise. I was using that as an example that we have been a team that has been difficult to beat, not as an example of Keane managing well. Second of all I put the "ifs" as an example of how not taking all of our chances has been devastating to our season, I am quite aware that "ifs" don't keep you up, thank you very much. I'm quite happy to receive constructive criticism but not criticism of something I didn't actually say.

byebyesheepshanks - Yes I'm aware of that, and I am painfully aware of the backwards step we've taken. I'm just staying behind the team and the man in charge, same as I did this time last year when the "Jim Out" brigade were protesting in front of Sir Alf before the Forest game.

matt i didnt once criticise what you had said i merely added another quote from other managers which i see you deflected from answering well ?
As for the ifs comment i was again pointing out from my view that what if we had lost those draws instead of as you are saying turning them into wins we would be down with Peterboro ,it doesnt mean anything they are still draws so why bother saying it ?

Heres one for you Matt where do you sit on the David Wright situation ,out of our 6 clean sheets this season he has started in 5 of them . Why is he not starting every game ?
0

Lightningboy added 16:09 - Feb 18
A..David Wright's not starting every game because our manager doesn't have a blooooody clue what he's doing?

Am I warm?
0

matt_the_blue added 16:11 - Feb 18
Surco I will completely agree with you on the David Wright situation, I do fail to understand why he's not starting every game. I did read somewhere when he was first dropped that he had picked up a minor injury (heel or ankle I can't remember clearly) but unless that is still niggling him he should be back in the starting XI.

As for the "ifs" like I said I was simply using it to highlight how the lack of a finisher up front has hurt us this season. It was simply a bit of harmless hypothesising.

And I'll apologise for the managers issue, I misinterpreted what you were saying. That being said how you interpret the sort of quote you gave all depends on your point of view - me personally it's 50/50, Keane perhaps should be doing more to get the best out of the squad and shouldn't be rotating the way he does, on the other hand £10,000 a week (which I believe is the max cap I heard ME put on wages this season) should be enough for a player to work his arse off week-in week-out, I've seen some lazy performances from some players this season.

I'm not pro or anti Keane, just pro ITFC. And I'm not the sort of the person who calls for a managers head, I never have been. It's the decision of greater men on who stays and goes as our gaffer and to me it's a waste of time to keep calling for his head.

To all you doom merchants out there - if we only do as well in our remaining 16 league matches as we have done in our last 16 league matches (25 pts) we will be safe. Not great but at least still in the Championship.I couldn't get to the Peterbro game and by all accounts we were pretty awful. We were awful v Newcastle but then put a much better run together. I'm sure we will do that again.

hype313 added 16:25 - Feb 18
Yeah thats great ranger but to be honest with all the investment in players and management I would be expecting far more than survival, thats why we are the supposed doom merchants.
