Walters Apologises for Posh Defeat Friday, 19th Feb 2010 07:11
Skipper Jon Walters has apologised to fans for the 3-1 defeat at Peterborough United on Tuesday. The 26-year-old admitted that the performance was nowhere near good enough.
Walters said: “I need to apologise to our fans on behalf of the players. They gave us great support as usual on Tuesday and we let them down.
“Speaking as player spokesman, we'll be doing everything in our power to put things right.
“We've got the capacity in our side to do well but the table doesn't lie and we're only got ourselves to blame.
“We've been near the bottom all season and we've got to deal with that. That's what we're paid to do.
“We've got to stay positive and I believe we have enough quality and character in the squad that we can get away from where we are.”
Meanwhile, striker David Healy says Tuesday’s defeat was a bit of a reality check. The Northern Irishman, writing in his column in the Belfast Telegraph, says he has otherwise been enjoying his time with the Blues: “I played for 70 minutes on Tuesday night although sadly we lost 3-1 at Peterborough – that was the first disappointment I’ve suffered since making the switch to Portman Road from Sunderland.
“Things got worse for us the next night because Reading’s win against Crystal Palace meant we dropped into the bottom three. That has brought it home that we are smack, bang in the middle of a battle to avoid relegation from the Championship.
“We have a massive match against Sheffield Wednesday coming up at the weekend. We know we need to go to Hillsborough and get a win and start climbing the table as quickly as possible.”

We really have become pathetic, we have a clueless manager and soft players who think it's ok to apologise week after week along with the manager. I've had enough of apologies, I can't think of another team that would have kept Roy Keane this long & a change of manager is our only option. We're stuck with the players we have now, we need someone they will respond to and perform for, that someone isn't Roy Keane, there are plenty of much more experienced managers unemployed currently out there, come on Ipswich sort it out. I can't stand the thought of ITFC being relegated, but face facts guys we are deep in the sh1te and have been all season.

marcoitfc makes agood point . I think that even the anti-keane brigade might have expected that what we would have this season with him in charge is some backbone and character in the face of adversity. As to the apology - it's just the first step Jon. First you apologise, then you demonstrate that you meant it.... ....tomorrow, on the pitch would be nice.

Thanks for apologising Jon, but it is not just YOUR fault. You cannot be responsible for every part of the team, or be in 10 places at once! But I am getting fed up of a random member of the team being pushed forward to do the "media run" for the week, saying how sorry they are - GO AND PROVE IT!!! Despite that - even if we WERE relegated, I would still go, being a true supporter, but I want it to be worthwhile and ENTERTAINING. Perhaps that is asking too much of some players??

I've got no problem with defeat so long as everyone tries their best & gives 100%. You cannot afford to lay down and die on the pitch again this season guys.

16 jack the only difference is I bet you don't get paid thousands of pounds a week for playing for your team? It's time we let our feelings be known, it's just not good enough matey & no I won't go and support anyone else I've supported Town for nearly fifty years and never seen them play in Division 3. That now is a reality & the club should know we are not pleased about it!

I was at the game on Tuesday night and if I'm honest I was massively suprised by the complete change of the players attitude. In the first half we were all over them and i couldnt wait for the 2nd half as it meant that all the action would be on our side of the pitch, but unfotunately this wasnt the case. 1) The summary of our performance in the second half was LONG BALL FOOTBALL!! No one wanted the ball and wanted to play football. Everything we did was LONG BALL. I think the main difference on tuesday night was also the fact that we dont have any wingers that are willing to take on the defender and put a decent cross is. Walters gives it a go but lets be honest, he hasnt got the pace and he rarely puts in a decent cross (when he should be the one we area aiming for). 2) I am happy that Murphy has been brought in but HEALY???..... all i kept thinking was why have we been after him for soo long. he was USELES!! didnt do a thing... I hope I eat my own words but he didnt offer anything. Counago did nothing and it takes me back to why on earth did we let Stead go?!!! 3) I'm sorry to sound negative as I have always been positive and hoped for the best... but the league table doesnt lie and there are other strong clubs around us that I really cant see them going down. Tuesday nights performance put alot of things into perspective and i am worrying!!! 4) the support on tuesday night was amazing and it was GREAT to be there!!! I hope Sheffield Wednesday is the night we start playing like a true Ipswich team and win! COYB!!!

You must give 100% every single game Mr Walters!! and the same goes for the rest of your lazy ass players!! Sit your players down and get them to watch a video of Matty Hollands team ....Now that is how a side should play!! Holland, Mowbray, Stewart, Johnson,...........Maybe the manager should watch it too!! Stop mugging us fans off, we pay a shed load of money to watch you lot entertain us, so stop all the media playing bulls**t and get out there and give us fans something to feel proud about!!! TALK IS CHEAP, PAYING TO WATCH OUR TEAM RIPPED TO SHREADS BY THE WHIPPING BOYS OF THE LEAGUE ISNT CHEAP!!!!!!

If all these experienced international players cannot do the job for the Town, why not let some of the youngsters have a go? Recall Trotter & Smith and let Upson have a crack at goal.

How about giving all the travelling fans a refund! If the players and Keane realise it was a well below performance and the fans deserve better then make it worth while for the fans!

As player spokesman it has taken me till Friday to comment on the game. An immediate reaction might hold some weight, not this after the event carefully planned media stunt.

Hopefully there will be a backlash by the players tommorow and next Tuesday, if not then we will be needing sat nav's to find the away grounds next season. At least no one can say that the supporters are not doing their bit because support doesnt get any better than that at Posh, as it has done away all season.

They just rotate the players each week with a prepared script saying sorry guys we let you down and wont do it again ... til the next game. If they are truely as good as they think it says nothing about the character of the team

The apology is a very nice touch, yet I agree what would be more pleasing is a win at Sheffield tomorrow! Jon was actually very disappointing on Tuesday - lots of effort but very little substance. Hopefully he will lead by example tomorrow.
