Rangers and Premier League Side Chasing McAuley
Rangers and Premier League Side Chasing McAuley
Tuesday, 11th May 2010 08:52

SPL champions Rangers are reported to be ready to make a move for Town central defender Gareth McAuley, who we also understand is interesting a Premier League side. The 30-year-old, who joined the Blues from Leicester City in 2008 for £1.1 million, was recently named the Supporters Club Player of the Year.

The Northern Irish international started 2009/10 poorly and looked set to leave Portman Road during the autumn when he lost the captaincy, but after switching agent he became more settled at the club and formed a more solid partnership with Damien Delaney during the latter half of the season.

Nevertheless, manager Roy Keane has rarely seemed entirely convinced by his central defensive pairing and may be willing to allow McAuley, who has a year left on his Town contract, to depart for the right price, probably significantly more than the £500,000 claimed this morning.

We understand the club has also received interest from a Premier League side for the ex-Lincoln City man.

Meanwhile, Town are still to comment on Tottenham’s £5 million offer for Connor Wickham, while we understand Stoke have firmed up their long-standing interest in skipper Jon Walters by making a formal offer, although the fee is unlikely to be at the £4 million mark previously reported.

Elsewhere, Football League clubs have voted to accept the increase in parachute payments for relegated clubs, which Town manager Roy Keane recently said would make promotion harder for established Championship sides.

The people saying they'll be angry with Keane if McAuley goes obviously don't have a clue about how a football club is run. If we get a big enough offer, it may well be out of his hands with ME & the board deciding it's too good to turn down. Personally, I don't think we should let him go for the £500k mentioned above, but he will have his price, as everyone does.

Just on the points raised of why are Rangers and premier league teams interested if there are better players... Firstly Rangers Can barely afford a stamp to send an offer in so there interest is not that flattering.. they can only afford cheap pottential and as far as Defending goes in the SPL you only need to have 2 working Legs to get by.

As far as any English premier league interest goes the story does not confirm who if anyone is interested and interest could mean someone has made a call to see if they can have him for free to sit on the bench or just had a scout look at him to find out if he is any good.

McAuley has been great and in my opinion our best player this season...but being "OUR" best player this season does not mean he is Irreplaceable and without Delaney alongside him he is a nervous wreck who cant take control see any game where Delaney has not played along side him. He was the same at Leicester he was only good with that other bloke next to him when they had the least goals conceded in their relegation year.

We can attract any current Championship player who does not get promoted through the play off's and we can afford them where as most other clubs can not including 2 of the relegated teams from the premier league this year.

so whilst We would be ok Keeping McAuley/Delaney for next year we are more than capable of replacing him with equal if not better quality we are also not limited to only spending the fee we receive for him.

Once again I'm utterly bemused that some people actively want us to part with one of the few jewels in our squad. I wonder if they're the same people who think Keane is useless in the transfer market?

Totally agree asamink, continuity is key as are partnerships(ie Macauley & Delaney) with players being shipped out and new ones brought in it will be exactly the same as last. I am behind roy though, you gotta give at least 2 years. after that then question him.

i for one hope he stays ,yes, so he didnt get off to a good start, but he got it together and proved again he is a decent player,i thought he would be one of the ''core'' Keane was talking about building on !.

Pinch of Salt everyone, dont get hung up by all this nonsense. as previous posters have put Rangers dont have a pot to piss in, apparently they and Celtic have been offered to play a SPL game in Boston for a million quid each, thats how desperate they are for cash. Kets be honest, every player will be linked from every club in all divisions, the chances of it happening are pretty zilch. Until someone signs on the dotted line i never believe rumours. They all start from agents anyway, trying to get an extra buck.

A centre back is not out priority. ME will only sanction a certain number of players to be bought this summer and there are other areas on the pitch that need strengthening. Mac is not expendable, if he goes he will need to be replaced which will mean missing out somewhere else. We do not have a recognised right back at the club, that is a priority. The last thing we want is to be bogged down hunting for a new CB.

Very improved player.. Myabe the Egoist will sell him just to prove that he can..
After all, we have lots and lots of talented replacement..

Getting well fed up with RK's nonsense..
If he thinks the players should live up to his playing standards, then maybe he should live up to Alf Ramsey's and Bobby Robson's managerial standards.

The truth is when a Premiership side or SPL outfit comes knocking it will be very hard to defend against a realistic bid. The player will usually want to try his hand at a higher level and it doesn't come much higher than the Champions League as in the case of Rangers. I'd be sorry to see him go but wouldn't blame him for taking a chance, his treatment by a PR minority at the beginning of last season won't have helped.

If this is true and if he is sold , who do people think that we will get in to replace him? True there are flaws in his play but he is an excellent CB at this level and i really cant see the point of changing his pairing with Delaney which is virtually the only area of thew team that works. Upgrade later when the areas that need improving have been dealt with. I see that nobodies interested in the deadwood yet.

With one year left on his contract and if he wants to go there is little RK can do to keep him. With a premier league club and an SPL club they will be able to offer him wages we can't match. So stop threatening to be mad at RK if he goes, he may not have had a choice. But then that would never stop the anti RK people on here using it as a stick to beat him with....

gerard1947 is spot on with his analysis. The question we need to ask is how much would we have to pay for a suitable replacement if McA wanted to leave? I'd say a good bit more than £Â½m. On the other hand, apparently we paid somewhere over £1m for him (not sure any outsider knows just how much) so a "realistic" price is hardly likely to be more than it was when Jim bought him. Better if he stays!

Its amazing how the usual wasters are allready attacking Keane for selling or wanting to sell McAuley when he probably does not even know about the so called "LInk" let alone whether he would accept any kind of offer lol

Naaridge you make no sense what so ever...
i used the term wasters towards people who are slating Keane for selling or wanting to sell McAuley when nothing even remotely like it has been sugested no where does it say Keane is open to selling him for any price let alone a sensible one...
How does this apply to me in anyway?

You Frickin Joker!

Can I just ask why it's Keane's fault that another club has shown an interest in one of his players? He's hardly likely to have been tipping off Rangers is he?

Be a shame if he goes, but we have an ideal replacement in Eastman, the new Terry Butcher IMO.

Blueandred - agree this is one thing that is not Keane's fault- re: other clubs showing interest in players. I don't see a mass of players however queueing up to play for the man we have as a manger . His reputation ! goes before hiim - no extra comment needed as it's all been there for all to see.( unfortunately )
