Town Make Eight Available for Transfer
Town Make Eight Available for Transfer
Wednesday, 30th Jun 2010 11:41

Town have contacted all other Football League clubs to make them aware of the availability of eight senior players. Alex Bruce, Owen Garvan, Alan Quinn, Colin Healy, Jon Stead, Lee Martin, Kevin Lisbie and Pablo Couñago are the eight players named in a circular which was sent out earlier this week.

All eight either spent much of last season on loan or in and out of Roy Keane's first team at Portman Road.

The inclusion of Jon Stead and Alex Bruce on the 'for sale' list probably suggests their proposed moves to former loan clubs Coventry and Leicester have fallen through with both Midlands sides changing their manager since the end of the season.

Kevin Lisbie, who spent the whole of last season on loan at Colchester, is already understood to be interesting a number of sides with Millwall having made their interest known.

All the players on the list are contracted until 2011, except Lee Martin, who may prove the hardest to move on, the former Manchester United man signing a four-year contract worth £12,000-a-week a year ago, terms which are unlikely to be on offer anywhere else after last year’s disappointing showing.

It’s no surprise that Roy Keane is looking to off-load a significant number of fringe players, the Blues boss revealing that exits would need to take place to partly fund his planned summer spending back in April: “At the moment, in the reserve group, we’ve got too many experienced players on too big wages. I don’t want that at the football club.”

Keane, who plans to have a smaller squad for the 2010/11 campaign with David Wright, Richard Wright and Liam Trotter already departed, also warned that moving players on might not prove a simple task: “It’s easier said than done. The players are under contract, they don’t want to move and when it’s clear to them that I don’t see them in my plans, some players will just sit tight. It’s about trying to find them the right clubs, but that will be down to their agents.”

Owner Marcus Evans also made the intention to shift out unwanted squad members clear in his programme statement at the end of the season: "While Roy has identified four or five players he would like to bring to Portman Road, he's also aware that he has a big squad and he's looking to trim that down. It's about getting the balance right."

One name which fans may be surprised to see missing from the list is striker Tamás Priskin, who failed to live up to his £1.7 million price-tag after joining the Blues from Watford last summer. It appears the Hungarian international, who spent the second half of the season on loan at QPR, will be given another opportunity to prove himself at Portman Road next season.

Elsewhere, Town’s chances of signing long-term target Michael Chopra could be enhanced by the Bluebirds' financial problems apparently continuing, despite their recent takeover by a Malaysian consortium.

A report in Wales claims Cardiff have so far failed to pay their players this month, having cancelled their pre-season tour at short notice.

The Welsh club are also due to make a £1.5 million payment to Sunderland by the end of July, part of the deal which saw the 26-year-old return to Cardiff last summer.

Chopra’s contract also included a clause which would see him receive an improved deal if he scored 20 goals in a season, which he did during 2009/10. The ex-Newcastle trainee is still to hold much-reported talks with his club regarding his future.

Meanwhile, Town's Ticket Office are selling tickets for the pre-season game against PSV in Eindhoven on Saturday 17th July (KO 7pm), priced at £4.25 with a donation going to KWF, the Dutch Cancer Foundation.

The match is part of PSV’s fans’ day, which starts at 4pm with food, drink and PSV-related items available at booths in car park P2 and in the Stadium Square in front of PSV FANworld.

The stadium itself opens at 5.30pm when music will be played and PSV TV films will be shown on large video screens. The coaching staff and players will be introduced to the crowd from 6pm and PSV’s summer signings will be unveiled and interviewed.

He mentions Pablo in this piece - interesting...

Cov have bought Roy O'Donovan from Boro to they won't be interested in Stead anymore. And Martin... oh dear - RK's adsmission that this is one of the worst signings in the club's history... Who the hell gets a 5 yr contract these days?

The deadwood may actually turn out to be our 1st team.

Last summer Warnock signed Ambrose ( a player who has underperformed quite consistently since leaving us as a teenager) he told this still young man who clearly lacks in self belief how he was going to build his Palace side around him. The result was that Ambrose was a revelation to many last season, I am no great lover of Colin W*****r but can any of us see Keane doing something similar. The art of good management is knowing which players just need a 'hug' and to be told that you believe in them and which players need a good boot up the jacksy! I have no doubt Keane has the ability to dish out the boots but is he so forthcoming with the hugs!
Personally think Garvan is the sort who needs to know that his manager truly backs him, I know he lacks pace but is that rare breed nowadays who can put their foot on the ball and look comfortable.

Player like garvan doesn't need pace, his skill is to pick a pass, and a good one at that and if keane sells I and probably a lot of other fans won't be happy

Priskin deserves another chance as some fans got on his back even b4 a ball was kicked by this man. Martin was shyte and anyone that says otherwise is blinkered as he is not good enough (ie no strength, no idea, and a little to wayward in his crosses and freekicks) we need to get rid to get in. We had a decent squad but someone decided to tinker with it every game so hopefully we will have the best 15 players playing every week please MR K?????????

i think the key thing here is that they've been made available for sale .. i seem to remember the same thing happening last year .. however nobody wanted to actually buy any of them .. speaks volumes .. town fans have their favourites bust they must get real ... these players are simply not good enough to push for promotion .. emmotion clouds judgement

Disappointed that Garvan is on the list, but not surprised. He obviously has the talent, but he is far too inconsistent. As for the others, can you honestly say they've proved worthy of a place in the team? There are one or two on the list who I'm hoping take it as a huge kick up the arse and perform well enough in pre-season to make it back into the team for the start of the season, but I doubt it. Time to say thank you and goodbye to a few crowd favourites and hope that whoever we get in, whenever they arrive, they settle in quickly and help move this club forward.

i reckon these 8 plus another 3 of keanes rejects would finish higher than keanes remaining 11..mostly its the management thats causing problems at this club nobody seems to have a clue what they are doing..and despite what his loyalists say it appears nobody wants to join a keane team except for sunderland rejects...wow what an exciting year to look forward too ...how much are the speedway tickets this year...?

I am afraid I agree with Garvan being put on the list. People say he is our most creative midfielder, but his lack of pace is alarming. whenever we played a team who got in our faces whenever we got on the ball, Garvan struggled due to his lack of pace and strength, all well and good being able to pick out a pass, but as was evident last season, if he lost the ball in the middle of the park and then didn't have the pace to try and win it back, the opposition either broke at pace on a counter attack or he lunged in and gave away a foul in a dangerous position (West Brom away is a prime example)

agree entirley with each altho not sure we saw what martin was indeed capable of...

my only fear is with such a public "we dont want you" if these players are around the place, they can/will only destablise the teams morale...

get shot, out on loan, anywhere!! even leave at home!! soon as poss so that the training ground is only occupied by wanted personnel...

you only have to look at what a few overlooked players did to the england campaign to see how bad it can be for the rest!!

What an utter joke. And I thought my football life couldn't get any more depressing than the England performance.

Keane and Clogg should resign if either of them had an ounce of decency .. although I understand Clogg's job description is all about London 2012.

ME should be embarrassed. Staying hidden was a very clever ploy as I for one would have plenty to say to him were he to make himself public.

I don't think we'll miss any of the above especially. The problem is that RK has shown fairly scarce ability to bring in decent replacements.

hear hear cheeseboy, mid to late 80s were crap, but atmosphere was better, with only 11 or 12.000 at portman road.0h and dare i say it id rather watch duncans late 80s shower than this lot, maybe not better players on the whole, but at least the style of play didnt send me to sleep! So yeah, duncan in!

I think the problem is that Keane has another (expensive) year left on his contract and ME doesn't want to pay him off..that's the only reason he's still here - it must be?!

..plus he doesn't want to give him loads of cash to waste considering the mess he made of it last season..so he's told him if you want to spend then you have to offload first..

..so it seems that ME is going to at least get a few more months worth out of Keane just to see if there is an improvement..if things are no better come october/november (maybe sooner) then he'll prob get shot of the mad irishman and only have 6/7 months of his contract to pay off at that point, which is a lot cheaper than if he'd sacked him at the end of april..

..the big problem is by then that the likes of Curbishley,Mowbray etc may be elsewhere..we've already missed out on Burley & Coppell..

..sooner or later something's got to give way..that's the only positive I can see at the moment.

Surely Priskin should be at or near the top of RK's list for transfer. He is just as big a mistake as Healy and Martin.
We must get a right back before the start of the season, if Peters plays in that position we may as well resign ourselves to Division One.
I think that the owner is refusing transfer funds in the hope that RK will become so frustrated that he will walk.

To all those who have posted in support of all these players, has anybody been killed in the rush by other clubs for them?
Can't you see that if they were that good there would a queue of clubs fighting to sign them, none of the players listed have performed that well over a number of seasons, if they had, we might have challenged for top and Jim would still be our manager.
