Town Make Eight Available for Transfer
Town Make Eight Available for Transfer
Wednesday, 30th Jun 2010 11:41

Town have contacted all other Football League clubs to make them aware of the availability of eight senior players. Alex Bruce, Owen Garvan, Alan Quinn, Colin Healy, Jon Stead, Lee Martin, Kevin Lisbie and Pablo Couñago are the eight players named in a circular which was sent out earlier this week.

All eight either spent much of last season on loan or in and out of Roy Keane's first team at Portman Road.

The inclusion of Jon Stead and Alex Bruce on the 'for sale' list probably suggests their proposed moves to former loan clubs Coventry and Leicester have fallen through with both Midlands sides changing their manager since the end of the season.

Kevin Lisbie, who spent the whole of last season on loan at Colchester, is already understood to be interesting a number of sides with Millwall having made their interest known.

All the players on the list are contracted until 2011, except Lee Martin, who may prove the hardest to move on, the former Manchester United man signing a four-year contract worth £12,000-a-week a year ago, terms which are unlikely to be on offer anywhere else after last year’s disappointing showing.

It’s no surprise that Roy Keane is looking to off-load a significant number of fringe players, the Blues boss revealing that exits would need to take place to partly fund his planned summer spending back in April: “At the moment, in the reserve group, we’ve got too many experienced players on too big wages. I don’t want that at the football club.”

Keane, who plans to have a smaller squad for the 2010/11 campaign with David Wright, Richard Wright and Liam Trotter already departed, also warned that moving players on might not prove a simple task: “It’s easier said than done. The players are under contract, they don’t want to move and when it’s clear to them that I don’t see them in my plans, some players will just sit tight. It’s about trying to find them the right clubs, but that will be down to their agents.”

Owner Marcus Evans also made the intention to shift out unwanted squad members clear in his programme statement at the end of the season: "While Roy has identified four or five players he would like to bring to Portman Road, he's also aware that he has a big squad and he's looking to trim that down. It's about getting the balance right."

One name which fans may be surprised to see missing from the list is striker Tamás Priskin, who failed to live up to his £1.7 million price-tag after joining the Blues from Watford last summer. It appears the Hungarian international, who spent the second half of the season on loan at QPR, will be given another opportunity to prove himself at Portman Road next season.

Elsewhere, Town’s chances of signing long-term target Michael Chopra could be enhanced by the Bluebirds' financial problems apparently continuing, despite their recent takeover by a Malaysian consortium.

A report in Wales claims Cardiff have so far failed to pay their players this month, having cancelled their pre-season tour at short notice.

The Welsh club are also due to make a £1.5 million payment to Sunderland by the end of July, part of the deal which saw the 26-year-old return to Cardiff last summer.

Chopra’s contract also included a clause which would see him receive an improved deal if he scored 20 goals in a season, which he did during 2009/10. The ex-Newcastle trainee is still to hold much-reported talks with his club regarding his future.

Meanwhile, Town's Ticket Office are selling tickets for the pre-season game against PSV in Eindhoven on Saturday 17th July (KO 7pm), priced at £4.25 with a donation going to KWF, the Dutch Cancer Foundation.

The match is part of PSV’s fans’ day, which starts at 4pm with food, drink and PSV-related items available at booths in car park P2 and in the Stadium Square in front of PSV FANworld.

The stadium itself opens at 5.30pm when music will be played and PSV TV films will be shown on large video screens. The coaching staff and players will be introduced to the crowd from 6pm and PSV’s summer signings will be unveiled and interviewed.

Also, I wondered how long the calls for Gio would take... *shakes head*

Keane must have championed Lee Martin really hard to get a four year £12k a week deal signed off. And a year later he's bunging him on the transfer list. If i was Evans, i'd be a tad f**ked off with that kind of thing.

Keane really needs to hit the ground running this season, and show that he's got some semblance of intelligence and skill about him. Its things like this that make him look a bit of a tw*t.

RobbieScarlatti - I agree with almost everything you said. Well done sir. Except, I can't see us doing any better until Keane bogs off !!!

ipswich elvis, go and support Norwich you fool, you have nothing positive to say about anything thats ever put on here, it all ends up being keanes fault or down to keane, its a tad boring now !!!!

with regard to the players mentioned, I would possibly only keep Stead and Conuago out of those names.

Martin has been a huge disappointment, especially on a 5 year contract on quite big wages, even when he was at man utd he was loaned out to 5 different clubs and never held down a regular first team spot at any of them.

I would also give Colin Healy another go, in the holding roll, to free up leadbitter or Norris. That was what he was bought for to sit in front of the back four. ok he didn't set the world alight but for 60k it was a gamble, that could have come off rather well , but ultimately hasn't

FifeITFC - nothing to do with finance - my post was based on numbers! Say all 8 were to go and (as we are finding out to our cost) no-one comes in - we're well in the poo!

Financially - we have a multi-millionaire at the helm!!!

But thanks for trying! Not gonna bite!!

Jimmy, then ignore me and don't bitch because I have a different opinion than you do. The buck stops at the manager and after last season, I don't want Ipswich to go through another season like it with a dimwit in charge of our side. The prime example is his signing of Martin. The messiah does not have a clue. If that is distateful for you then it's too bad. That's my opinion and I am entitled to express it.

ipswich elvis yes you are entitled to your opinion as everyone is, yet i seem to remember you labelled me a fool for voicing mine on a previous topic. I think its def fair to say that this season will be make or break for Keane, I wasn't happy about last season either, but in the 2nd half of the season we showed play off form, just a shame about the woefull start, our problem wasn't loosing games it was the fact that we drew too many, we just need a couple of quality additions to the squad and fingers crossed we will push on

Take that 4 millions for Chopra, put another 500k and get Gio Dos Santos for god's sake!

Tunnel vision I think! We buy him at that price with the wages he would now command after the World Cup there would be no funds left even to pay the pie sellers on match day.

Does keane want a creative midfield? No. We are going to be Wimbledon circa 1988 - but without the success.

Jimmy, I do respect your opinion and I mean you no disrespect at all. I just can't stand Keano and I can't pretend I do. I was not glad that we did better in the second half of last season, I was relieved. For me, Keano is NOT a good manager and he has done absolutely nothing to convince me otherwise. If he by any remote chance does, then I expect plenty of I told you so messages heading my way but I doubt it will happen.

Puts Keane's rather whingey comments of the last two days into perspective. He was clearly told players would have to go before more could be brought in, with the possible exception of a couple of key signings if we could get them. Reading between the lines, maybe Roy thought the owner would push the boat out anyway and has recntly had a rude awakening.

Plenty of life still left in the Chopra move by the sounds of it, which is encouraging. I think we'll probably be able to move on Lisbie, Stead and Bruce, so there could be a new face or two and at least a few loans before the start of the season. Not the wholesale changes prior to preseason that Keane wanted, but maybe Roy is finally learning to play our chances down a little...

Alex Bruce, Owen Garvan, Alan Quinn, Colin Healy, Jon Stead, Lee Martin, Kevin Lisbie and Pablo Couñago.

Where is Priskin?

Don't agree with Bruce or Garvan both up to this level

You'll notice that the list was only circulated to Football League clubs, not Premier League clubs.

The only surprise for me on that list is Lee Martin, but I guess that with Civelli back in contention for the left wing position, Keane can't see him breaking into the first team. And if we were able to get a contract like his off the books, it would free up the funds for a new signing straight away.

I think this is the right move - We all know Keane doesn't go along with most of these 8 and we all know how stubborn he is - so for both parties it is better if they can find other teams to play for. My opinion is that we should keep Stead - he was our top scorer when he played full season and even if we get Chopra (or similar) he will be useful as a sub but I know Keane doesn't like him at all. The last time they met at Sunderland he didn't even make a full season under Keane. Anyways - it will be good to get rid of the players we will not be using (whether we agree or not) so that we can buy some more expensive players. It is obvious that Evans would not risk more money without some savings from the big squad and wages and I agree with him. If it was me paying £32M for debts then giving £12M to Jim the first year, then some £8M more to Keane and God knows how much more that we don't even know of without any return I would get cautious too. And saying “return” I don't even mean promotion — we buy most of the players only to put them in the transfer list after that — Thatcher, Campo, R. Wright, Pim, Lisbie, Quinn, Shumulikoski, Stead, Martin, Healy, Rosenior… I think the only way out is try to get rid of all fringe players and then buy some really quality players for more money (like Chopra — I see the deal is still alive with this new info about Cardiff's financials) in order to have a chance for promotion. And we should move quickly because the new season is coming….

This is going to be a fun pre-season with 8 unwanted players in squad and preparing for season ahead. We are not going to be what you might call settled and everyone pulling in same direction.
Let's hope most go out quickly because it doesn't look as though any will be coming in until some have gone.

I don't have any arguments with the players listed but would possibly have kept Stead. What does worry me though is that we will have several players hanging around the Club who know they are not wanted and don't care whether they play or not a la Quinn and Counago. This in turn will create a poor team spirit leading to poor on the field displays. Why on earth was this list not circulated earlier as most of us agree with the names stated and nothing has changed since last May. As stated on here yesterday this is all very depressing and the annoying thing is we hear nothing from the hierachy at the Club. All a sad state of affairs - oh what Joe Royle could have done now.

Please Keanites tell me why he spent so much on Martin. Did he ever see him play before signing him? Or did he take someone elses recommendation without watching him? Either way the signing was inexcusable.& why so much for Priskin & then loan him out?? I wouldn't trust Keane with £1 of my money. And now we have to sell half the team to raise cash, including the only creative player we have - Owen Garven. No wonder Keane isn't being trusted with ME's money

Very interesting. This could be the beginning of the end for Keane. No doubt he expected to be able to keep on signing expensive players but now these have to be moved on to generate the cash. I doubt he will be happy with that. And it is hard to think that anyone might pay a fee for any of them. Notice some were signed by Keane and no doubt on wages that no one else will now pay them. Difficult to see then who might sign them even for free and we can expect to see them loaned out to whoever might take them by paying a fraction of their wages.

So as things stand we would be left with, delaney, mcauley, leadbitter, norris, peters, civelli, priskin, walters, edwards, murphy, lee barrett, oconnor, smith and wickham.15 players and some of those have only a handfull of games played between them. The powers that be would want to open their eyes and sort this one.Im sure the budgies are laughing at us already with the state this club is in.i think its time the real Marcus Edwards did something instead of us listening to Clegg the monkey who obs hasnt got a clue whats going on.

I'm a fan of Keano and when things go right he is up there with the best, but when things go wrong (last season) he only creates unrest with players (bit of a coincidence Keano was the man to back Capello) do we really need to know who the players are or the players themselves need to know, personally if I was told your not wanted I wouldn't give 100% I so hope we're more successful this season but I'm not filled with confidence lets hope I'm completely wrong, a little champions celebration next Easter would be lovely. BLUE ARMY!
